After Godzilla vs Destoroyah the big G man never really got a sequel. But now Gemstone is making short films set after the 1995 movie and even bringing back designs and characters from the Heisei series to make follow ups. While Toho hasn’t really made too much info on them available as far as continuity goes, these are made to be reimaginings of Gigan and Megalon the same way Ghidorah, Mothra and Mechagodzilla were in the 1990’s. This is everything we know about this new timeline for Gojira from Japan so far.

It's wild how much of this stuff is coming out way. I live in Tokyo and often visit The Godzilla Store and other locations here with special events. It's gotten hard to keep up with all the cool merch! When I moved here in 2005, there was almost zero Godzilla stuff around. Since 2016, it's just kept ramping up. I cover a lot of all that on my channel, boots on the ground format.

@@Dragoncurve It's funny thinking a FW looking Goji is the Showa Goji now, but it was based off of the old 70s films so it makes sense. Also now we seem to be getting Godzilla and Jet Jaguar vs Ghidorah and likely MechaGodzilla. Unknown if it's the Showa suit restored or reconstructed or a remade/rebuilt Kiryu.

To be fair, the original script for *"Godzilla: Final Wars"* by Shogo Tomiyama (Tomoyuki Tanaka's successor as producer from 1989 to 2004) and Wataru Mimura (the writer for *"Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla II")* was to have Godzilla Junior as the lead kaiju, with the opening taking place in the late 1990s and the rest of the film set in 2032, but the script was later rewritten by director Ryuhei Kitamura (who's NOT a fan of the Heisei films or even the earlier Millennium films) and Isoa Kiriyama.

Yes, the Gemstone shorts are excellent! But wait, they're a combination of animation and CG and suits?! I would never have guessed that. For me, the Gemstone shorts are fun because yes, it's just straight up monster action, but they also get in, make their point, and get out instead of stretching it into a feature length film. I'm one of those weirdos who, after the fashion of the 1954 movie, likes good human drama in my Godzilla movies. But still, the new shorts are really enjoyable for what they are, and Megalon looked amazing for once!

I feel like we're gonna get some kind of confirmation on this subject this coming up year, considering that most of the monsters whose anniversaries are coming up (Mechagodzilla, Spacegodzilla, and King Ghidorah) appeared in the Heisei movies. If these shorts are meant to be sequels to the Heisei series and one of these three appears in the new one, there's definitely gonna be some kind of big reference to their movie counterpart and an explanation for how they've returned. More importantly, as a result of this, Toho may finally give us official confirmation that the Gemstone shorts are a Heisei continuation. Unless they decide to use King Caesar instead, which I doubt, I feel like this is a very real possibility.

Forgive me if everyone is aware of this already, but sometimes I get the impression that fans think the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa periods are Godzilla-specific. That is not the case. Every time a new emperor ascends the throne in Japan, a name is chosen for his reign, and used in numbering its years. By Japanese reckoning, we are currently in December of Reiwa 5. The original Godzilla was made in the Showa period (as Hirohito had an extremely long reign), and the Millennium movies were all made during the Heisei period (which ended in 2019). Starting on May 1, 2019, Heisei 31 gave way to "Reiwa Gannen" (the first year of Reiwa), with the Heisei emperor's abdication and the enthronement of his son.

@@Dragoncurve Let's see...according to a handy-dandy chart I pulled up, the Showa era ended on January 7, 1989. As for the movies, I'm not familiar with what gets lumped in where, but it sounds like it's just a broad generalization for a certain style. Sort of like how everyone knows what 80s blockbusters were like, except there are a few in the late 70s and early 90s that still fit that image.

It's so nice to see Godzilla becoming so mainstream now, especially in the US thanks in no small part to Legendry's Godzilla films. With all the interesting and unique ways that Godzilla is portrayed though, it does kinda make me sad that Godzilla 1998 still get's so much hate even though technically it was ahead of its time by radically transforming Godzilla. I can't wait to see what they do with Godzilla next but whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be entertaining.
@Kaiju-bm4ts
@Kaiju-bm4ts 6 ай бұрын
It wasn't really ahead of it's time, g98 just did your typical case of *Hollywood cares more about money than representing a IP correctly* which is something they were kind of already doing for decades. It's the reason why the 1976 remake of king kong couldn't capture the story as well as the 2005 reboot. You can change godzilla but don't do it to the point where he's a different character all together. Zilla jr has the same design as g98 and had a classic godzilla personality and powers, that's how you do a different godzilla. Something different but still familiar. G98 was too different and lacked all familiarity. Really makes zilla jr sort of underrated as a godzilla now that I think about it
@alienstar2088
@alienstar2088 6 ай бұрын
@@Kaiju-bm4ts I was more so combining Zilla and Zilla Jr together since one kind of leads to the other. I mean, I think Zilla captured Godzilla's essence pretty well - a giant reptilian monster that mankind had a part in creating and now must suffer the new super predator it created. When you step back and look at it, Zilla compared to something like Shin is a lot more tame and to form of the Godzilla we've previously experienced. I mean, Shin is the furthest departure from Godzilla we've ever had in how many different abilities it has that are just absolutely disgusting. Yet, people praised it on how different it was and while I never really had a problem with it the point stands. G98 was certainly a different adaptation of Godzilla but to say that it was worse or did something more extreme than ShinG is a ridiculous notion. Both should be praised for their creativity and differences.
@Kaiju-bm4ts
@Kaiju-bm4ts 6 ай бұрын
@@alienstar2088 Shin gojira gets praised because it was handled by a fan and still has qualities and characteristics common in all other godzilla incarnations. Zilla on the other hand, lacks most of what makes godzilla himself. Being a radioactive reptilian kaiju isn't just exclusive to godzilla when beast from 20,000 fathoms already beat godzilla to it. Having new abilities doesn't make godzilla less of a godzilla as long as said new abilities still play a role in making godzilla a threat that lines up with his theme. Shin gojira evolving makes him more of a unstoppable nuclear threat which is what he represents, the only threat zilla brings is...making kids....not only does that give zilla a identity crisis and makes people doubt it's gender but when you take into account zilla causes LESS destruction than the military despite aiming to have a similar theme as shin gojira isn't a good way to get the metaphor across. Don't be a walking nuclear disaster and yet...you cause destruction that's not even close to a nuclear disaster. Shin did that, zilla did not.
@alienstar2088
@alienstar2088 6 ай бұрын
@@Kaiju-bm4ts I think you give Zilla less respect then what it deserves. Sure, Zilla may not be a slow moving unstoppable force but make no mistake, it is nevertheless just as deadly if not more so than other Godzillas in the fact that it can reproduce others of its ilk with even more fantastical powers than the original had. If the events that led up to Zilla's destruction did not occur and its hatchlings where raised to adulthood, do you comprehend how much destruction they'd cause? We are talking about a possible extinction level event for Humanity. This is something that Shin Godzilla even took with it's Humanoid creatures sprouting from its tail. Why is that not called into question and Zilla's spawn are? They are effectively the same thing. So what if Zilla's gender is unidentifiable? Gender with a hulking Kaiju should never be a question anyways, it makes no difference if Godzilla is male or female or somewhere in between, having an identifiable gender doesn't make any Godzilla less of a threat. Zilla takes a different approach from most other Godzilla incarnations sure, instead of being slow and bulky it's fast and nimble, instead of being a one man army it can produce offspring with different abilities and powers but, why should it be damned by those changes instead of embraced like recent Godzilla incarnations? Red Dust Godzilla is one of the most mind numbing explanations for Godzilla yet, no one seems to hate it as much as Zilla. Shin Godzilla has similar powers with a wildly different design from normal Godzilla yet it isn't hated as much as Zilla. Just because Zilla is "Weaker" than most other Godzilla incarnations isn't an excuse enough to me to be hating on it so badly and you can say what you want about the acting and overall plot of the film but you cannot deny that Zilla and Zilla Jr. were the first radically different Godzilla incarnations that we see all the time now and yet it is still overly hated for that exact reason.

Despite all similarities until it's confirmed I would hold back on saying this is a continuation or that this is Godzilla Junior, especially. One official guide says that it's the "return of the monster king" with the "experience of his many battles etched into his cells" which sounds more like his father than the son-who only fought aggregate Destoroyah. Megumi Odaka, Miki's actress, also said the work of the Heisei series came to a close. There is also a continuity error. The energy enhanced punches Godzilla used on Megalon were said to have "never been seen" despite Heisei using them agaonst Spacegodzilla and watched/documented by G Force. So I take it as a spiritual successor but probably not the same canon as the films. We did know of multiple timelines in the Heisei series though so who knows, maybe events branched off differently in the Gemstone timeline.

It's a suit design here, a sound effect there, a scene mimicked, etc. A culmination of everything wrapped into one, so that EVERYONE can see their own favorite G-design continue on. I personally like the idea of it being a continuation of the Hesei films....and that's okay.

Interestingly the start of the Hesei era coincide with DC Comics "Crisis on Infinite Earth", which rebooted the continuity of their various characters especially Superman and Wonder Woman. Since then both DC and Toho have had at least three reboots since then.

The 90s godzillas were the best, as it was suitimation and practical effects, with few CGI effects. Godzilla vs Gigan Rex was awesome though. And i can"t wait for more of Godzilla Junior's reign to continue.

The naming convention always threw me for a loop. Because, by the strict definition, the Showa era ended in 1987, and the Heisei era ended in 2019.

Imo when you go and see minus one if your not walking out of the theatres like holy shit this was the best Godzilla movie, I think there's some issues lol. For one so much in respect of the original 1954 movie was done by the team behind this minus one project. I really don't think I could go back watching another Godzilla movie and get what I got from it. something about it, its just holy cow.

There's a time line to monster movies? I always just watched and enjoyed, never knowing they were meant to be connected in any way. Huh, who knew? Haven't watched monster movies since the 80s.

Yes by gemstone and toho legally said yes in his version yes jts cannon. But up to the fan if they wanna continuity through the shorts. So toho is not denying it the fact it's by gemstone the person they hire to do the shorts. It is 100% Jr but cannon and continuity is up to the fans. Gemstone says it cannon, toho is not denying it.

This is how i see each of Godzilla Era. 1954 is the ground zero of all timeline. The Showa Protector this era are spiting into two part first is the villain trilogy this is consist of Godzilla Raids Again, King Kong vs Godzilla and Mothra vs Godzilla while the rest of the instalment is the Protector of Earth. The Heisei Anti Hero this era where Godzilla is not consider a hero or a villain. The Millennium Anthology this era where every Godzilla instalment are not connected a part to the 14954 except Tokyo Sos. The Reiwa Experemental this era where they try a different take on Godzilla via 3D and hand drawing Anime or put Godzilla in the present time (Monsterverse may consider as a sub Reiwa Era due to they start the new era)

the showa is continuation of 1954 because godzilla raids again is a sequel of 1954 but at the end of godzilla raids again godzilla was on iceberg and in king kong vs godzilla godzilla got out of an iceberg

(8:09) Im not exactly sure if these short films are sequels to Heisei series. Plus honestly I think if they were actually gonna continue the Heisei continuity, I would prefer an actual movie and not just 10 minute short films because I think it doesn't do the idea of continuing the events of "Godzilla vs Destryoah" justice (at least in my opinion). Not to mention that I find it a little odd that Godzilla Jr would turn aggressive towards humanity despite him being more friendly then his adopted father in the films. 🐣👩‍🍼🦖👿🔥 (5:22) That would be cool if the next short film use King Caeser in it, not only would that be a fun tribute to the 74 film but also it's about time we get to see him in action again. Plus if this is supposed to be connected to the 90's films then it would feel kinda redundant if they just build Mechagodzilla again lol. 🛕🦁🤔🤖🛠
