Dragons' Den

3 жыл бұрын

Ian Softly has had this invention sat on a shelf since the early ’90s and now he thinks it’s time to bring it to market, his invention is the ‘Step Lock’ - a unique replacement for your door bolt. Ian seeks an investment worth £200,000 but will he find it here in the Den today?
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Richard Farleigh just exudes pure class. I've never seen the guy belittling and mocking another entrepreneur coming to the den for an investment. He always shares a bit of advice and wishes them well on their way if he decides not to invest. The guy is in a league of his own in the way he carries himself in the den as opposed to the rest of them. Extremely knowledgeable yet humble.

@elliotth30
@elliotth30 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, however the orientation of the screws is different, so with standard locks the screws if kicked would just push out, however with his version the screws are perpendicular to the direction of force - so theoretically it is as strong as the shear force of the screws or bolt instead of just the strength of the surrounding wooden frame :)

@@elliotth30 Valid point, and to add to that wood screws are not designed for shear strength. This would need custom bolts.
@elliotth30
@elliotth30 3 жыл бұрын
@@MADMAX7330 true, just looking at some tolerances at a data sheet for some wood screws - for a screw diameter of 3.5mm and a length of 20-50mm all have a sheer force of about 0.20Kn which seems to be 20kg. So theoretically with approx 4 or even 6 screws at most is no more that 120kg of force behind. I must admit that would certainly be enough to stop someone pushing or kicking.... But... When you compare that to, for example, a police handheld battering ram that can deliver a potential of 3 tonnes of impact force... I'm gonna take a quick guess and say it doesn't stand a chance 😂 Edit: however I suppose there could certainly be a business in it if you brought 38 of them for the single door frame, a total of 150 screws 😂
@varrjames186
@varrjames186 2 жыл бұрын
@@elliotth30 I agree that the screws are perpendicular but using force against the door would cause the screws to split the wooden frame. Either way though, surely the noise of kicking someone's door in would wake the occupants.
@grahamjohnson4702
@grahamjohnson4702 2 жыл бұрын
@@varrjames186 you could not generate enough force to cause the perpendicular screw to split the frame, also splitting the frame depends on the quality of wood used and the method of fixing, but the most important thing is that the person trying to get in will have been seriously delayed in his/her attempt that they would have moved on.

Chains are the weakest for this purpose and the most vulnerable (they designed to let the door open ajar, through that opening it can be cut), then it's only a matter of bolt vs this. I can see it as an alternative of a door bolt, easier/simpler action, potentially stronger (although has smaller contact with door), but that's another topic. And I don't know why some people complain of him not bringing a "functional, scaled down" door as a demonstration, it's obvious from the design that it'll do that part of the job and demonstrating how it works the mock-up door is a good solution.

Now I'm no physicist, so someone can feel free to correct me... but the A frame principle he's talking about is when load is pushed down onto the A from the top, that's why roofs are built on a row of wooden beams that look exactly like A shapes (layman's terms, they are actually called trusses). Workman tables are sometimes built like it too on top of 2x A shaped legs each side so it's super sturdy. The strength comes from applying force at the top of the A, downwards. NOT when your just pushing the A structure from the side. The wooden A frame would just fall over 🤣🤣🤣 🤦‍♂️

It's actually a reasonable concept, he's just marketing it all wrong. I'd rather use this than a bolt, I would even use it on my back gate if it was adapted to accept a padlock.
