If you want to inspire girls and teach them the history lessons that would empower them as young women, creating dolls that reflected real women who did great things(amelia earhart, boudicca, Marie curie, Rosa Parks, Elizabeth I, Emmeline Pankhurt etc.) would probably be more effective.

She has literally made her own version of the American Girl dolls which absolutely dominated the US for a very long time. I had the Victorian one when I was very young and there was the colonial one, ww2 doll and I forget what else. They each had 5 books that told the story of their families, birthdays, holidays, schools and hardships. Now there’s a ton of different dolls and if this woman ever tried to breach the American market, she would be laughed at and crushed like a bug. The American girl fans are savage.

The business is still going on! This Dragons' Den episode was in 2015 or 2016. Wikipedia says: 'In 2016, the company expanded to include contemporary dolls that featured friends who all live in modern day London', so looks like she learnt from the feedback she got in the Den. Now 'A Girl for All Time' has 18k likes on Facebook, tons of posts and a good looking website. Difficult to conclude if the business is doing good financially, but at least it's still going on. Good for her! At least she had an interesting idea and put lots of effort into making it come true.

I actually bought one of these dolls two years ago. I mostly leave it on the shelf and occasionally look at it from time to time. It does look quite creepy but it is actually well made and I don't get tired of looking at it. These dolls are quite appealing to a certain group of people. I see it more of a collector's item that a plaything. Also a child sees thing differently than an adult. What adults see in creepy dolls, to a child its nothing more than a friend. I do hope she is doing well though.

While the design is pretty unusual, I kinda like it from a certain aesthetic point of view. Now, mind you - I know nothing about dolls, and I'm not a child, so I can't really know for sure what a child's reaction might be to something like that. These dolls remind me of the Victorian era, they are quite solemn and modest, and the story is pretty interesting. But this is coming from an adult who's fascinated by the days of old. Perhaps her target demographic is somewhat off... maybe other areas would be better, like vintage decorations. Or perhaps other markets even, where they are much more interested in things like these, like some parts of Asia. Japan maybe?

I'm with you honestly. Never played with dolls unless Bionicles count. I liked the design of these. If the idea is to empower women, I don't believe some saccharin, smiley, post-nuclear era aesthetic is the way to go. Like the dragon's said, these dolls look solemn, like they've experienced loss. Think about absolutely any good heroic tale ever and it always involves the protagonist persevering in the face of hardship. I don't see how that's a bad thing. And maybe this is because the internet has already desensitized me, but I didn't even find them that creepy. Kinda uncanny valley but that's all dolls. I find the ones with the giant eyes way scarier personally.

I'm not huge on the face sculpts she used, I think she might actually gain more from emulating the book covers a bit more and going full throttle with the sad delicate look. On that note, as a kid, I would have loved a doll series that went with a whole family a 'older' book series. (But hopefully cheaper than the American Girl Doll series.) It's not a bad idea and I believe there's a market, it's just those lukewarm face sculpts and outfits. Lean into the stylization or just go home, y'know?

The reason dolls have an exaggerated smile and pink cheeks is precisely to get over the creepiness factor. So she's based her entire business on critique of the one thing that makes dolls approachable. Sleep eyes are not gonna solve it; that'll just make it look like something from a doll museum, and no kid is gonna force their parents to buy ten of those...

This is coming from a member of the doll community and a owner of these beautiful dolls. for the people who think these dolls are creepy. If you don't have anything nice to don't say anything at all. Just because they don't smile, blank face, longer face and not the classic doll face doesn't mean there creepy!!! In my opinion I find smiling dolls are creepy and unnatural. The doll themselves have great joint's, soft beautiful hair. You don't see many doll lines that have consist quality in dolls and clothes. There is is even a boy and black doll added to the line this year so there is also diversity!!! Not every doll has to smile and look happy!!

So, she doesn't like dolls that do housework or wear makeup, because she feels those are negative role models for young girls. So she replaces that with bitter, grim historical figures angrily defying gender stereotypes in the face of male oppression. To me that's just projecting her preferred type of negative role model, because she wants to raise bitter young women with victimhood complexes. Surely it would have made more sense to create a modern range of dolls representing successful professional or entrepreneurial young women? These dolls clearly are not designed for play, anyway. They're musty collector pieces for older women's display cabinets.

They strike me as being Collectors pieces... I make dolls and little animals using crochet.. but not for children.. wouldn't be suitable because of the beads and things I put on them... they are aimed at Adults.. not commercial as I've only one pair of hands. These dolls are sombre, they have a sadness... History is not jolly, so the dolls suit that era. The Dragons are looking at them from a child's point of view. . An adult would view them in a different way perhaps, especially if they wanted to collect a set of them.
