I'm glad you like it!!!!! I did a lot of research on service animals awhile back because I was thinking I might be interested in one, but I put it on the back burner, but I still thought it was a really good idea and a REALLY easy concept to translate into the fiction- hearing aids and mobility aids are hard when it would be odd for a cat to create a proper allegory like a wheelchair or something, but a service animal??? That's an easy one to translate!

As someone who was born with hearing loss, I was very disappointed of how Snowkit was handled because he was the only young deaf character we ever got. Seeing these kind of AUs of Snowkit surviving the hawk and not having him as hopeless as he was in canon, makes me really happy.

In my au, Brackenfur gets to Snowkit before he is snatched by the hawk. After, he learns how to communicate with the apprentice and teach him how to fight. Much like the tribes, I would see him as sort of a cave guard. Maybe when they leave the forest for the lake, Snowkit (still Snowpaw because of his lengthy training) would feel more comfortable in the tribes as a cave guard. Strong and brave but not so good at hunting.

There's a really good AU comic called "Twin Shadows" where Firestar doesn't come to the forest at the start of prophecies begin and Tigerclaw successfully kills and replaces Bluestar. One fun side effect is Snowkit is alive and they're creating CSL to accommodate him, and also Tigerstar has chronic pain because of an injury to his paw when he jumped the hawk. I don't have an AU where Snowkit lives, but I do have one where Bloodclan won the battle for the forest, and this lesbian couple joins the shattered remains of the clans to protect their deaf daughter, who Speckletail will eventually train as a warrior.

Also when you brought up Snowflight's service rat, I screamed because I have a OC warrior OC called Silence and he keeps pet rabbits to help him gather herbs/for company since he is a loner who only interacts with others from time to time. The first one was named Harris who sadly was killed by a fox but he now has a new one called Patch and she just follows Silence around. He isn't really disabled but one of his eyes are scarred and don't work so meh. Other cats find it weird but he likes his rabbits. So he doesn't eat rabbits XD

I have a Snowkit AU where Snowkit is dropped by the hawk in a patch of grass near where the rogues live. A rogue named Red (my oc cuz why not lol) comes along and brings Snowkit to the barn. Snowkit has a broken front leg and a few scratches, but is otherwise fine. Snowkit has no idea where Thunderclan camp is, but wants to get back home so Red helps him by taking him to four-trees and then telling him directions by a sign language system. Snowkit limps into Thunderclan territory, and is found by a border patrol, which also contains Mistlepaw, now made an apprentice. He has a great reunion with his sister and mother, and then requests to be a medicine cat because he wants to help cats like how Red helped him. Snowkit becomes Snowfall and Mistlepaw becomes... well, I still need to work on that, but Snowfall is a medicine cat and still sees Red time to time whenever going to a gathering or to the moonstone. Its a bit of a work in progress but eh.

I have my own AU (not about Snowkit). It is about Redtail! Basically it goes off as Redtail is the cat of the prophecy. Basically, Oakheart kills Tigerclaw, Redtail kills Oakheart in vengeance, and now regrets it. He hasn’t told anyone. A few moons later, Redtail saves kits and elders from a fire in camp. Another moon later, Spottedleaf tells him she thinks Redtail is the prophecy cat, and he tells her he has killed Oakheart. That is all I have so far, except he is going to be leader.

But even still A deaf kit could 100% learn to communicate using body language, mainly because that's what cats use to communicate naturally Plus A deaf cat could totally learn how to survive with the clans help. If they had just taught him to. The point is, everyone is trying to put logic into a book about magic talking cats, if a blind cat in a magic talking cat book can live, then why not a deaf cat who learns to survive and use a cat ASL or body language. Trust me, considering this is a book where cats have medicine and can talk, and have magic (starclan/the three), i really don't think it's all that far fetched.

Real cats don't meow or communicate to each other much. Snowkit being deaf shouldn't have been a big problem. Cats have lots of receptors in their bodies, sight alone Snowkit could've been a warrior. He could still use his whiskers to help him feel what's moving around, he could've felt where his prey was moving. We are literally told that Brokentail, a fully grown warrior and former *leader, could die* because he was blind. Because he could be picked off by a fox or he'd never be able to catch food; where was that for Jayfeather? The born blind *kit* who could just be killed at any moment because he couldn't defend himself.@@bensonboi3728

This is old but here’s a quick Snowkit/Frozenheart AU After being snatched by the hawk, Snowkit survives the fall but has multiple injuries. Two broken legs, a lot of scratches, you get it. He wasn’t dropped far from camp so he’s found and taken care of. His clan mates however don’t bother that much with him, the medicine cat doesn’t check on him, his mentor yells at him for not hearing him, etc. Now Snowpaw, he leaves the Clan in the middle of the night in a fit of rage after a fight with other apprentices. He walks and walks, yelling and cursing. When he realizes where he is, he doesn’t know how to get back. Snowpaw finds a barn and he settles there, isolated and trying his best to ignore his badly treated injuries. He learns how to communicate with cats and lives an overall okay life. He’s not social at all though, ignorant, sarcastic, and doesn’t care about anything. A Tom one day comes by and tries to talk to Snowpaw. Snowpaw gestures he can’t hear, and tries to walk away. The Tom runs after him and, surprise, he can speak cat ASL too! They talk for a bit and the Tom asks Snowpaw’s name. Snowpaw pauses. He stares away from the Tom and thinks of his life, the Clan’s neglect, his lost sister (forgot to mention, but she went missing before he left). Finally, he looks at the Tom and gestures, “Frozenheart.” Bad ik

My AU (or headcanon, it could fit into canon) is that Snowkit lived, and was dropped by the hawk. Mistlekit went out and found him. They trained together and learned to survive on their own. They then give themselves their warrior names, Snowtuft and Mistleflight. (I'm assuming they mean the mistle as in the kind of finch) The next part is when the forest is being destroyed in NP. Mistleflight misses ThunderClan, and wants to go back. Snowtuft refuses to go with her to find ThunderClan, because he's mad no one tried to find him (even though they did look for a while). Mistleflight goes anyways, and spots the monsters. He goes through RiverClan territory near the gorge to avoid them. A RiverClan patrol attacks him, and one warrior accidentally pushes Mistleflight into the gorge. Snowtuft misses Misteflight almost immediately, so he leaves after Mistleflight a few hours later. He follows her scent to the gorge, and he scents the patrol. He pieces together a false story: Mistleflight was murdered by RiverClan. He's furious, and tries to murder several RiverClan warriors. He begins to hate the Clans. Yeah he attacks some people and stuff then dies somehow. He goes to the Dark Forest, because he still is connected to his ancestors. That gives us Snowtuft. He's not deaf there because Brokenstar wasn't blind there so...

I know this is old but I do have a Snowkit AU, though it is tied to a Good Tigerclaw AU, when the Hawk is spotted Tigerclaw runs towards Snowkit and grabs him, dragging him back into the Nursery. Tigerclaw uses his body to stop the Hawk from gaining access to said nursery, as when the hawk spotted that it's prey had been saved it changed it's trajectory to try and dive into the nursery. Tigerclaw ends up badly wounded by the Hawk, which is eventually driven off by the other warriors ganging up on it.

HECK YES! There are soo many different AU’s for Snowkit out there that I adore but yours definitely stands out to me, it’s so adventuress and I love how the scratches on his shoulders look like wings, implying his name Snowflight 😊. And also, I have to agree with you on the fact that I despise Snowkit’s death because I can’t imagine what disabled people reading this series would think of this, and also I just don’t think he deserves it...

One thing tough... No one has ever been able to tell Snowkit how clans work. He doesn't know the warrior code or anything like that. He doesn't even know his name, because the clan cats don't know how to tell it to him... He could survive, but wouldn't really understand the consept of clans (until someone from Thunderclan learns how to communicate with him). I'm a rat person. The service rat idea is awesome, but I think the rat wouldn't agree to be trained by a cat. The rat would train the cats! The Erins have said that Snowkit and Mosskit are good friends in Starclan. I like to think that instead of him being able to hear in Starclan, him and Mosskit develope a secret languange and not even Specletail understands it.

Oh that's a VERY good idea. Also he might! He might be able to read lips a little bit, and even if he can't understand complex ideas with charades, he learns from example and he might learn later, just slower because he has to create new language skills first.

I really like this AU and the video but I just need to say something about 1:31. As somebody who is deaf in her right ear and has Asperger's Syndrome, I didn't feel excluded. Please don't speak on my behalf because honestly I wasn't offended by Snowkit not living, and there are other disabled characters like Cinderheart who I absolutely love just due to them being well developed. Please don't assume that a disabled reader would be offended over a deaf kit being killed off when we have Cinderheart who's a very well developed character. As I said, I like the AU and the video, I just have an issue with people assuming a disabled reader would be offended just since a disabled character died in an environment where disabilities like being deaf can lead to them possibly not knowing of the danger and dying, like how Snowkit died.

As a kid reading the books I never gave much thought to Snowkit's death... but as I got older I realized just how upsetting it is that he never got the chance he deserved. The authors can make the world of Warriors a dangerous and seemingly unforgiving world without hurting their already small pool of disabled representation. They have such a bad history with the subject! My rewrite AU of the original series features Snowkit escaping the hawk's grasp and becoming a normal apprentice for it. His apprenticeship was only delayed because the Clan leader had no idea who could properly train him yet. He's going to have a long, happy life and that's one thing I'm happy to spoil! I also incorporated pawspeak into my au - the cat version of ASL that was developed by ShadowClan cats as an alternative means of communication (and helped earn the Clan their name because it helped keep them stealthy). Snowkit definitely deserved better!!!

I had a snowkit lives au literally AGES ago. It was my first au, infact! Although it mostly just entailed a rouge named amber finding snowkit and teaching him a form of asl with different rhythms of tapping on the ground to mean different things, similar to Morse code. She then took snowkit to riverclan and showed him to leopardstar and that’s about where that ends... however, this has kind of inspired me to re use and old character, still using the rouge finds snowkit thing but actually being good and finishing it!

I have my little SnowKit lives AU to I remember reading somewhere that Scourge had Hawk talents in his collar because he killed a hawk. So my AU was born Scourge kills the hawk that was carrying Snowkit and he is raised in bloodclan. When they find out he's death the clan wants to get rid of him but Scourge keeps him because he sees himself in Snowkit, they rename him Hawk because he's was brought here by a Hawk. He does learn cat sign language and I adopting your idea that he has a service rat but I'll give you credit! =3 he's there at the Battle and he's having trouble fighting because of his mom and sister -she's here as well-. Scourge dies and Hawk takes over blood clan More later I would think that they attack again but the kin would be there, because of Hawk's sister he fight with the forest against the kin. They are welcome to the forest and Hawk choose to join windclan (windClan doesn't get much love) the BloodClan cats rename themselves and Hawk gets the name HawkSnow And the deal of them joining windclan was HawkSnow will still be somewhat leader so he's the second leader but doesn't get the 9 lives until the death of the normal windclan leader and becomes HawkStar That's what I got please tell me what you think

I really love that you addressed the issue of Snowkit’s deafness being treated so... poorly. Jayfeather is blind but we get an entire book series partially from his POV addressing the way he thinks the clan’s treatment of disabilities is unfair and ableist (which it is). And yet Snowkit is completely shoved aside. Cat sign language also makes a lot of sense in the context of feral cats. There’s so many ways this could have been handled better and I love that you made an AU for it. And that other people agree. I do feel a little awkward though, because I have a Warriors character I’m writing about named Snowflight. Lol. Whoops. I guess name overlap happens in the fandom sometimes. Also, poor Mistlekit. And Speckletail. I might honestly subscribe just because of how well done this video is.

Don't know if you've seen it yet, but there's a video going around of a cat using the ASL gesture for food to ask it's owner (who I believe is Deaf, but I haven't been able to find the source video) for something to eat. So YES, it's completely believable and more than realistic for fictional smart cats to have their own sign language.

I've seen that one and I don't know a lot about it, but I HAVE trained a deaf ferret myself as well as hearing fereets- and you usually use a clicker but with my deaf girl I used a flashlight instead. I've seen other trainers for dogs use signs to train dogs- you're connecting something you do with an action they do, a gesture works just as well as a word, so if we had cats that are full human intelligence like warriors.... No excuse lol

@@Draikinator Honestly, it'd make even MORE sense for a warrior group to have some method of communication that could be used whenever you couldn't hear or speak to others. Whether that was because your surroundings were too loud, the other people were too far away to hear clearly but could still see you, or even not wanting to give yourself away to the enemy by speaking aloud. Any sort of sign language like that could actually save lives and be a massive asset to the entire community.

I rescued a deaf cat from the streets some time ago. He looked just like Snowkit! So I made an AU about Snowkit surviving the hawk thing and becoming a kittypet. Yours, however, is better! And also, deaf cats can sorta feel the movements in the air. I mean, I clapped my hands near him, and he turned to look at me. Not because of the sound, but because my airs my made some sort of a wind that he can feel. Perhaps Snowkit can be a warrior basing on that skill!

Yeah!! The vibrations. They can feel it in their whiskers. Cats are SUPER sensitive and deaf cats are usually just fine in the wild. Sometimes it takes awhile to even realize a cat is deaf because they're just so capable you don't even notice they're disabled lol

I have a Snowkit AU where he’s rescued from the hawk. He gets to train and gets the name Snowgaze since his eyesight is what he uses to compensate for his deafness. He has a drive to prove himself and actually ends up being kind of intimidating because of that drive and the fact that he never talked much. He also takes on a roll of protecting kits and is usually near the nursery and loves to babysit for tired queens, mostly to prevent anything like the hawk happening to another kit

My Snowkit Lives AU has Snowkit being saved last minute by Brackenfur, Mistlekit also exists. She and Speckletail both are very thankful of Brackenfur. When they become apprentices, Mistlekit becomes another apprentice of Whitestorm. And Brackenfur? He tries to get Snowpaw as his apprentice. However, Bluestar is a bit cray cray. Bluestar forces Snowpaw on Cinderpelt, who isn't quite ready for an apprentice. Snowpaw befriends Swiftpaw, bonding over their anger of what Bluestar has done. Snowpaw, in this, learns how to read lips. And mostly gets it correct 80% of the time. Except at gatherings. He sucks at gatherings. After Brightpaw gets brought back to the clan, Snowpaw remained at her side for almost the entire time. Mistlepaw tries to comfort her brother, but Snowpaw refuses to believe anything is wrong. "Nothing is wrong, Mistlepaw, Brightpaw will come to and... Everything will be like normal. Nothing is wrong." he had told her. Mistlepaw leaves with Fireheart, who had also checked up on Brightpaw. Cloudtail and Snowpaw befriend each other, bonding over their worry for Brightpaw. Later on, when Bluestar names Brightpaw, Dogface, Snowpaw goes off into the forest. To calm down his temper, he attacks a tree and wails. His niece, Tawnypaw, spots him and talks with him. Speaking of her own grievances about Thunderclan and Bluestar and tells him of her resolve to join Shadowclan. Snowpaw, knowing he can't stop her, simply tells her that although he doesn't know her well, he'll miss her just like Goldenflower and Bramblepaw will. After Bluestar dies, Firestar, upon Mistlepaw going to him. Even after "Dogface" had come to, Snowpaw had seemed sad still. Mistlepaw had asked Firestar to name him as a warrior apprentice instead. So after Firestar renamed Dogface, he gave Brackenfur a new apprentice after Tawnypaw had left. That apprentice being Snowpaw, he beams at this and thanks both Firestar and Mistlepaw. However, come the battle against Bloodclan, Whitestorm dies. Mistlepaw is without a mentor. Snowpaw, despite his distaste for herbs, helps Cinderpelt due to only recently starting his warrior training and not knowing how to fight. After the battle, Firestar gives Graystripe Mistlepaw to train. After the two gain their warrior names, the two express their joy and happiness. Their warrior names become Snowhope and Mistlewing.

I think there's been between 3-5 cats that have had extra toes in canon, usually their name symbolizes this (spider). I love how Cushfuddled on DA shows cat sign language in their comic AU where Snowkit lives, and these are all things that the books state the cats do anyway, they are always shown using their tails or ears to sign things to each other on patrol or from a distance. Speaking of the service dog thing, I can't remember who but someone on Tumblr has an AU where Tallstar has a deaf and blind adoptive border collie dog sister who lives with the clans and goes to the lake with them. Also have you seen Acorn-trees AU where Brambleclaw saves Hawkfrost after accidentally impaling him? Taking him to Thunderclan to recover and the clan keeping Hawkfrost being alive still a secret to the rest of the clans, and Hawkfrost gets better morally while living there and eventually goes to find Mothwing and apologize for everything he did to her. It's one of my favourite AUs atm.

So fun fact- I play a deaf cat in a rp and a huge plot point for her is her being shoved away to the nursery for apprenticeship and then the elders den once she ends up as a “warrior”. This plot point comes from the fact that her leader is an absolute asshole who deserves to be killed. There’s actually a plot where her bro is plotting a rebellion and stuff... anyways, the point is that her being treated horrible when she is more than capable of fighting is a huge thing, one that kinda mirrors Snowkit’s treatment.

I love your Snowflight PMV as well as your explanation for it. Snowkit deserved so much better and that's why in my own Warriors fan fic, cats call their parents Mom/Dad, Grandfather /Grandmother and actually spend time with them. Cats with disabilities are hailed in the highest respect and there even was a blind leader named Havenstar and a deaf deputy named Talonwhisker and they fall in love and I could go all day long. I have a Snowkit lives au where as Snowkit is being carried off by the hawk, Speckletail jumps after it. The hawk lets go, but the fall of the impact permanently breaks her front leg , however Snowkit was a bit lucker, as he lands in a bush. He has be a kit for longer than his denmates, but when he finally gets to become an apprentice, he gets Brackenfur as mentor. He ends up getting his warrior name (which is Snowpool) and Speckletail retires knowing her kit is safe. I imagine Brackenfur is kinda like an interpretater for Snowpool. Like certian movements mean certian things.
