In this short clip from an interview with Drake in 2010, the young superstar-in-waiting outlined a facet of the philosophy that’s made him into an unrivaled, chart-topping phenom, not to mention hip-hop’s reigning king of choruses:
Be Your Own Worst Critic
Cited by pundits and commentators as the man who took the previously entrenched boundaries between singing and rapping and co-mingled them within the mainstream space, Drake’s hook-laden approach to song-craft has meant that while he may not receive his proper reverence as an MC, his capacity for hit-making is undeniable.
But to be honest, the man who can now self-assuredly flex about having “more slaps than The Beatles” didn’t acquire his status as one of the all-time Billboard mainstays by spitting complex 16’s, he did so through his knack for anchoring his songs around innately catchy choruses.
Seen as one of the core elements of commercial rap as we know it today, these immediately ear-grabbing refrains are something that Drake can deliver at what seems like the drop of a hat.
But, as his comments here would suggest, the reason that they’ve so regularly been translated into globe-spanning mega-hits is because Drizzy is always looking to bring the potential of his hooks to the fore.
As opposed to weighing it up and accepting a middling effort as a placeholder, the OVO leader will discard anything which, to him, simply doesn’t reach his own unimpeachably high standards.
And if his comments to MTV are anything to go by, it’s due to the fact that he has the foresight to not see the song in a vacuum, but think about how that chorus, when properly rendered, could contribute to his legacy.
Now, if you yourself are a rapper who wants to learn how to create a legacy and learn the hidden catchy song structures of rappers like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole in a song-by-song training of their work, click HERE to get our 4-hour songwriting masterclass as a free bonus on that page.
However, when it comes to Drake, ashe made clear to Elliott Wilson, another thing that keep his hits feeling vital is that he is never looking to so much as invoke the spirit of the past when it comes to crafting a new hit.
“I don’t wanna sound like No New Friends, I don’t wanna sound like I’m On One. I did that already- Drake on CRWN, 18:57

People talking shit on drake don’t understand his writing credits. Dude written for Kanye, dr Dre (him and Kendrick helped on detox but it never released) him and Wayne used to exchange bars back in the day. He wrote 0-100 for diddy (then kept it lol) “Fuckin problems” was his song but he gave it to rocky as he felt the radio was over saturated with his music. Hate all y’all want, but his Pen is golden 📓✍🏼

Pure gold in so many ways. What a great video for any artist. I like how Drake talks about the creative process. The process has to be creative. It's so easy to get stuck in the engineering and the technology. Which is so inspiring and enables so much. But it can suck the creativity out of your process. MVP Joel "the process" Embiid.

4:04 this really hits! Rap is the only genre that we try to "standardize", and really have done so for YEARS. With rapping written lyrics being taboo, that allowed mumble rappers and extra prideful freestylers to emerge over time. I actually liked when Drake rapped off the Blackberry because I write too. I'm trash at freestyling but I can write like a MF! The rap community has gotta chill out fr

Drake a 🐐 goes to show Hollywood is a good training ground for musicians. Since they are two branches of the same tree. Rappers are mainly just actors on record. They dramatize stories to portray a certain image/picture. Music is kinda corny underneath everything when you think about it objectively as you get older you can clearly see how hip hop targets the youth

Bros, I got a question, is it possible for one to adapt from writing on paper to texting, I ask because I always like writing on paper but the problem is it's not transportable as I travel so I waste hours not writing while I'm out and about during the day and I don't think writing on paper old school is practical as much anymore and I think it's restrictive, if you used to write in notebooks, how did you adapt to text if that's what you did?. If you didn't, obviously just tell me you can't answer.
@wellDamnJamz

definitely possible my g. i used to be hardcore committed to paper. and to this day I can feel the difference. but nowadays i'll write on paper and transcribe to text. once you lose enough notebooks you start to feel compelled to make things easier on yourself. also being able to highlight, copy, paste etc becomes more than worth the trade over time.

I love writing lyrics and I love writing raps and I love writing songs but for me it is one of the most thankless soul killing things in the world to me. This thing is if you come up to me and you're hungry and I make you something to eat I mean more than likely if you're a decent person you're going to be like thanks man I really appreciate this meal. Music on the other hand feels like this. Imagine that same scenario imagine you're hungry you're starving you want something to eat. But instead of just me every single person around you is in the process of making you something to eat and they are all saying here eat what I have in the other person's like no eating my food in the other person's like no eat my food everyone is competing. Honestly I would not be surprised if there was a large amount of artists that committed suicide due to the just absolutely bullshit artist go through trying to get appreciation for what they created. There is literally a reason that most artists die broke. I mean shit I would love for that not to be true. I would love to not have a couple of hundred songs on my phone that on the day when I do blow my head off I will likely instruct my sister to try to put my music out there. Just for all that writing to have not been done in vain. But like I said I do love writing lyrics I love writing rap I love rapping but it is so fucking thankless.

Anybody know if Drake knows music theory? I got a good ear i’m not trying to spend years studying music theory. I find inspiration in other major artists that don’t know music theory.

I’ll always respect Drake for using the 48 laws of power, how to win & influence friends & coming to America where people swear they know that stuff & he played innocent & took over the game under our noses. Drake is the definition of do what’s logical. Like todays artist are very unprofessional and illogical to the point it’s hurting their longevity.
