My sister worked in A&E for years and never wanted to be a GP, but after a few years and when she was planning a family she actually decided to move to GP, and she absolutely loves it. Largely for the stable working hours - more family appropriate as her husband is a consultant so it often on call, so its nice that one of them is at least in a more routine/time-predictable setting. I know you don't have children so that's less necessary for you - BUT, I do know, that despite never ever fancying GP, she absolutely loves it and has been there happily for many years now.

Totally agree with mental health education. Poor mental health can manifest itself in so many different ways. Eating disorders, self harm, bullying, aggression etc. can all be a sign of poor mental health. I suffered from bulimia in my early 20's....nothing to do with being skinny, it was more of a control thing as my personal life was taking a sharp nose dive at the time. I kept it under control through exercise for the next 10 years, but it would have been easier and quicker to properly rehabilitate if I had more knowledge and better skills to do it. Alex, we're all aware that you live in your own which must be hard considering what you're going through and the fact we're going into Lockdown 2. We're all here for you when you need us. Alex you are such an outstanding guy, a great ambassador for Drs and for mental health, ur energy is infectious. I feel your brother is helping u find the path you should be on, what an amazing sketch of you and Clio. Pls always look after urself 1st with riding the wave of grief. I say it changes on the hours in the beginning but as time goes on you learn to accept and adapt to this new life, it's shit yes but as u feel those lows Alex just remember the good times and happy memories and before you know it you will be smiling thinking of your bro. I lost my Dad last year suddenly and honestly I do feel the 1st year you are in a haze of shock, disbelief, denial but what I do to get by all the special occasions is to remember him and celebrate him.. Father days we realise ballons with messages, have his favourite dinner and go to is Park, Xmas light a candle beside his picture, bday I make cupcakes and my little girls make grandad a bday card and we still visit my mams as we wud have if he was here, we sing happy bday.. The bottom line is Alex do what u feel is right, we all have our own way to get by but remember there is so many of us with the ache in our stomach and litreally a piece of our hearts missing. It's OK to have the rough days just roll with them and the feeling you have now it doesn't go away you just learn how to live with it and before you know it you will start having more good days.. All with time. Sending you positive vibes and love from Dublin x

With regards to A&E or GP...All I can say is I wish I had you as a Doctor from a young age with your appreciation for mental health, your empathy for people which is rare and knowledge of many aspects of medicinal care. You would have just made me feel better than what I have had said to me by a Doctor.when feeling so low..."what can I do for you"...When all I needed was for someone to take that burden off me for a while and give me advice on how I could be helped..The reason I had plucked up the courage to go to the Docs for that help as I felt I couldn't help myself right then anymore. Keep up the great work and take care of yourself. Onwards and upwards you"re an inspiration young man 🙏💙🙏💙

I think that currently the buzz of a & e is a plus factor as opposed to being in a gp practice. However you are such a people person but surely being in the frontline where you can visibly see you are helping people would be better than referrals. Plus I don’t see you being able to give just ten minutes to each patient work!!!! You are such a good person. I hope you find happiness. I’m still grieving from the loss of my parents twenty years ago. I don’t think it ever goes away just something you learn to live with. Just be there for your parents. They must be so proud of you. Hi Alex, Have been in the same boat regarding career decisions for the past year. Working as an A&E JCF/locum since returning from working in A&E in Australia post F2. Spent the past year weighing up the options, still undecided but will be applying for both GPST and ACCS-EM this November. Will be a bit of a punt, as courses/audits etc this year have been cancelled due to COVID. Hopefully seeing my offers/options on the table if I’m lucky/successful enough to receive any, then I’ll be able to decide my future from there. Love Emergency Medicine but GP training may be a new challenge that would be more compatible with my life outside of work. Good luck and keep smashing it! Tom (from Cardigan)

Hi Alex, You are an inspiration to us all. Regarding your future, I have two points - a career isnt everything - I literally worked so hard for so long, the stress gave me a stroke at 35, and secondly - you are in a fairly unique position with your fame, your kindness and your talents in healthcare - maybe you should look at something bigger that may help more people, the media is an obvious choice? However - in regard of point one - look after yourself first and that gives hou the ability to help others. Take Care.

Hey Alex , lovely to see your return on KZbin , As for potentially promoting or becoming a GP 👨⚕️ I think you definitely need to provide yourself with some time to think all avenues through which I’m sure you already know but you definitely need to do whatever it is that makes you happy. I can tell just how much your job in A&E means to you as well as your genuine care towards us as a community 💙 I definitely think becoming a GP would give you more opportunity to provide more help and raise more awareness to mental health and would inspire a lot more people to not only reach out but also speak up when feeling low. First time I'm finding you - saw your lovely face - Couldn't believed your energy and your passion even in this time. With all the the plates you have to choose from, I wonder which it will be? I had to go to doctors 2dys ago and wondered why you would be a GP with all the continued mundane everyday things you have to deal with. I couldn't be a GP. Look forward to following you with interest on your quest. 🙂 An admirer

Please do keep speaking about mental health where you can. I think it's super important that you are and it's close to your heart because someone we know will be suffering with it and people need to get as much self help, advice and information as possible as so many people were affected in the last lockdown and as this one is in winter people's SAD will be kicking in. 💙

I am in Australia and I love to watch your videos what ever they are about. From my point of view I see my GP at least weekly with either myself or the kids. Anyway I think you would be an amazing GP that way you get to go on what ever journey your patient is on in life. Something you don’t get in the ER?

Hi Alex thank you for making this video it’s great to see you back I love all your videos my husband has COPD and it is so worrying at the moment I got to the ripe old age of 56 and started suffering from psoriasis it literally covered my whole body after 18 months I eventually got to see a Dermatologist and I am now on a course of medication which is really helping but recently I have have several flare ups , and have also suffered from a basal cell carcinoma to the left side of my nose unfortunately practically all that side had to be removed but is how healing really well . At 62 it was a terrible shock . I would love more updates on the pandemic on the front line too . Take care we have really taken you to our hearts stay safe and well ❤️

I saw someone else make this really good point and i totally agree - I've had the same GP all my life and she is a huge inspiration to me, her advise and life experience is so incredible and important. She always listens, always takes action to explore what can be done (over the years there have been so many things, mental and physical that she helped me overcome). She also has always looked after my mum and my sister too, so she knows my mums mental and physical health history, and my sister, i think that continuation of care if so important. She has such a breadth of understanding about my and my family and how we all interconnect in our ailments, be them mental or physical. I saw someone else make the point that you will never have that in a&e, that end-to-end care and closure. Anyway - I am so thankful to have the most incredible GP, and I know you would be just the same in your care and your patients would feel as fortunate, trusting, and comforted as I do.

I would definitely be interested in mental health content. I suffer with depression and anxiety. Have done for about 10 years. But this whole year I have struggled so much, the worst it's ever been. Even before the pandemic but especially since. You're such an inspiration! Keep fighting for what you believe in and stay safe 💙

Hi Alex I'm walking this road with you. My best friend who was middle aged died from suicide a few weeks ago, totally out of the blue. She lived a full life full of friends and good times but she was always lonely, felt vulnerable and empty. The ripple effects on all her family and friends is immense. One day at a time is the path we have to tread x

Thanks so much for this. We are all in this together and have to find the best way to deal with the situation. I lost my brother over 11 years ago, we were emailing each other one evening and the next day he was gone. It was very hard to accept and I used to sit staring into space continually shaking my head in disbelief. It’s a long journey but I’m still here. Surround yourself with kind people and be kind to yourself. We are all here to support you through this ❤️❤️❤️

I'm definitely interested in mental health content. I have anxiety, depression and psychosis. My anxiety is really bad with the current climate. The worst thing right now for me is having to mess about getting sick notes for the social security still during all of this when I'm terrified every time I have to go outside. I think the government should just pay people with poor mental health right now. Not to mention its ridiculous putting more pressure on the NHS by making us have to bother doctors surgeries to get sick notes.

Alex you're amazing. I'm looking forward for what you will be doing for students of a younger generation. I wish I had all of this when I was in school. I was diagnosed with major depressive discord over 10 years ago now. Many antidepressants later, I still have more bad days than good. My boyfriend entered my life last year during a tough time, and he has saved me from having my suicidal thoughts, but mentally I still need help. COVID hasn't helped. Was forced to quit my job because I look after my Mum who was part of vulnerable group. Couldn't risk bringing it home (they also couldn't furlough me) Universial credit isn't paying the bills well, struggling to find a job. It's really tough. Lost my Uncle to cancer in Jan, and a father figure to suicide in June. Really hate this year... Do feel fed up sometimes. Hoping the holiday season will perk me up a bit :(

Good vibes video as usual 👌🥰. You would make an amazing GP actually. A lot of GP's are undervalued with mental health management and that's sad as they are the crutch for patients a lot of the time. They're not crisis staff so they have the time to build up a proper relationship with the patient which crisis staff don't. I think you're personality would suit GP setting for the reasons I've mentioned. Patients would so benefit from you as they surely do on the frontline in the short time you're with them 😊 best wishes! ❤
