I’m pretty sure temu (another cheap market that sells clothes and other items) does the same exact thing. the only reason why they can price so low is because they hire children, and they pay them $1.20 US dollars per month. shein and temu are both insane companies.

I just wanted to put this out there, but shein mass producing handmade crochet items is terrible. I’m an Etsy seller and I know how much effort is needed to make items like bags and hat etc that have been trending lately. Bags can go for $50-$100, and they sell them for $10. There is no such thing as crochet machine. It can only be handmade. And they are selling them for so cheap that the employees could easily make below minimum wage. And they are MASS PRODUCING them. If that doesn’t scream sweatshop idk what does.

As a Bangladeshi, I’ve never shopped from shein. It’s my people who have to go through labour just to be underpaid. I buy clothes from h&m, zara and other brands which to be honest…doesn’t make it any better. I get my clothes tailored in Bangladesh whenever I visit or someone from my family does. Tailoring clothes in Bangladesh is cheaper than getting it tailored in the west. I’ve friends who shop from Shein and Aliexpress and sadly enough, it’s true I don’t have the right to stop them. But they do understand the issue with shopping from fast fashion brands but clothes here in general are so expensive, it’s beyond for us, college students to afford sometimes. I’m lucky enough to be Bangladeshi and get my clothes from desh but my friends aren’t (: The last thing, it’s our own people who accept such requests/orders from these fast fashion brands and allow garment workers to be underpaid. They don’t understand the effort and time it takes since all they can do is take orders and pass that onto poor people.

I used to buy everything from shein and i mean like not even a month ago. When I saw bens video I was horrified that I'd been contributing to the same level of atrocities that the mines in Africa perpetuates and perpetrates. Ive since deleted both romwe and shein and now get my goth/grunge aesthetics from places like Killstar and Black Cult Clothing. The price of the clothing isn't worth paying the cost of a clean conscious. I can't imagine the level of exhaustion these workers must feel when after a month of grueling labor they get a day off. A frickin DAY off in a month (?!?!) and the horror stories of them washing themselves in the bathroom sink at work just to maintain some semblance of hygeine BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO DO ANYTHING MORE😢

There is the fact that thrifting isn't always cheap. In big cities, especially, it's still on the pricy side. This is because when the rich shop at those places, all the prices go up, so then it's not as affordable for the lower income people. There are some good online thrifting websites, though. ThreadUp is one that I've been seeing a lot of recently, so I would recommend that. However, like you mentioned, another problem with Shein is the lack of durability in the clothing. You described it really good, there really is more money to be made in making things poor in quality, so people have to buy more and more. Basically, if you shop at Shein too much, the prices will add up. I don't know everyone's financial situation, but I think a good way to do it would be to buy good clothes on credit, thrifted or expensive. Then again, I'm 14 and have never had a job or done stuff like that, so this is just my 2 cents, and take it with a grain of salt. Thanks for reading this?

What sucks about some people who know this and wants to share these things to others so people are aware is that some make those who have bought from these shops like SHEIN and Temu feel even worse about buying when they didn’t know. I’m one of those people who feel worse especially by how it’s pushed I only bought once from Temu before I found out I already knew about SHEIN which I never bought from until my moms friend pushed my mom into buying from there which I deleted from her phone and will do from mine as well so she doesn’t buy from there AGAIN. It would just be nice if some people who want to make people aware of the issues behind these companies not make people feel bad about it yes you can educate them just don’t make them feel worse. Everyone makes mistakes without being aware. I hope people can educate those who are buying as long as they don’t guilt them into feeling EVEN WORSE.

That one influencer saying that "investigative journalist" and that she's an "independent thinker" and likes to "seek the truth" while failing to realize that gorgeous facilities like that could NEVER be funded off of clothes that are $10 dollars a piece when it comes to material prices, fair wages, etc; you must think that something is off. It's worse considering we live in times where SO much information is accessible to us, esp someone of her status, and that in THIS economy their presentation and the reality cannot be the same.

I'm an old gal who has been trying hard to avoid sweatshop clothes since 1970...honest to God. At first it was easy because I could make clothes from US cotton. But after 1980 it became heroically more and more hard even to find US fabric. Naturally, I wasted money, which is no longer possible. So I have a few sweatshop free clothes and nothing "clean" to even go to church. Which brings me to the horrendous hypocrisy of Hobby Lobby which has made a fortune with a piety that ignores the corporate forced abortions and slave products that stock their shelves. A devout Catholic, I no longer even know what that means anymore because I was part of the Vatican II Justice enthusiasm that is simply GONE and replaced with endless political and theology fighting with ZERO inspiration to live a Christian life as I grew up knowing it. Thank you so much...I love your rant and only hope your tee shirt was at least made in Mexico.

Ben I literally love your content on your main channel soooo much and I recently started listening to this podcast aswell and I just wanna say how much I admire the fact that you can create content that makes me laugh so fucking hard and at the same time content that is so educational and inspiring Like I just agree with everything you said here, there is no ethical consumption under capitalsm, consumerism is such a problem and it just makes me soo happy that you take your time to educate ppl and talk about it

You have really inspired me to try to go thrifting but there are only 2 thrift stores in my town and one is a Salvation Army and I have seen that they support anti-lgbtq organizations but I will keep trying to thrift

HI THIS IS MY DRAMA FOR THE NEXT EPISODE!! So like, I’ve been on summer break for awhile so this happened awhile ago, but one time me and my friend and some random boy were goofing off, he was saying there was a spider in her hair and I bopped her nose and said “the spider is dead now!” And some other boy said it was crawling up my arm to keep the joke going, and then he said “oh no it’s in your shirt!!!” And all the other boys were like “WHAT THE FUCK AYOOO” and then I heard “that’s spider must have a GREAT view” from one boy, and just so you know I’m very “developed” for someone of my age, and the day before I had worn a tanktop so uhmmm…. (BTW IM A BIG FAN!!)

Some facts about thrifting. (My personal experience) My mom works at a thrift store and has been for 20 years. Overpricing is an actual problem. In thrift stores recently. Some thrift stores recently have been raising prices to where it's not very accessible to the poor anymore. My mom used to buy all our clothes when i was little from her job at a thrift store. But now its nearly impossible to get that much clothes via thrifting. Also with it becoming more trendy places like Goodwill are raising prices its all shitty but thats capitalism i guess. Ive seen them sharpie off original prices just to sell them for higher.
