Dr i have more than one hammer toe but there is one that had a blister I went to 2 different podiatrist none of them gave any explanation of what was happening if I didn’t asked I will never found out my problem I still have the blisters for more than 6 months they never told me that I need a wider shoes all my life I had wear regular because my foot are skinny now with my age that changed and I didn’t see it coming, I had spent a lot of money buy shoes that don’t work for me now and insoles too. I really don’t understand why they do explain the problem and fixed the best way they can. I learned more from you in this little video that all my visits to them, thank you sharing and helping

Great video! I have one hammertoe on my right foot. It's the toe next to my small toe and it is bending to the left, not curling down. Can you recommend a reasonably priced orthotic for this problem if in fact it would help. Thanks.

An orthotic is not going to be the best choice for this. I don't think it'll help. Look for a "crest pad." That will help to support your toes and keep them in alignment.

Mine is bending to the right and curling down. I have a bone callus on the same toe as well. It looks like a clear round bump on the top of my toe just underneath the nail. I just bought a clear gel crest pad on Amazon. I am taking a trip where I will be on my feet alot...So I need comfort. I hope it helps.

I was recommended this Flexor Tenotomy. Podiatrist gave Zentoes but that doesn’t seem to help my pain when walking. Is it a fairly safe procedure which will eliminate my pain without long term complications?

I have a2nd toe that is hammered and semirigid. I have a lot of pain at the base of the toe in the plantar side. When I go up on my toes, it feels like a tight rubber band pulling on the plantar side. I cannot have surgery, as Im healing from foot surgery for PBT tear on the opposite foot. What exercises will help, will massaging the base of the toe help, crest pad, Achilles stretches? This toe is rotated to the right and has become very thin/bony. Will surgery help?

That's a great question. No, none of these pads eliminate the hammer toe itself. They are just a means of supporting them, preventing them from getting worse, and stop them from hurting. The only way to correct a hammer toe permanently is with surgery.

They certainly wouldn't hurt. They'll stretch out the soft tissue and would certainly help to provide some relief.

Using a crest pad under the toes is helpful to straighten a claw toe. You can find them in the foot care aisle of most pharmacies.

You are a gem for the help! If I was still in Houston I would go to you. I just watched surgery on a hammertoe and after they drilled the middle, the top portion of the toe literally flopped over as they were putting the pin in the drilled out part! I was like WTF. It honestly scared me lol it was almost like their toe fell off! My question is only time will tell on individuals if tendon cutting will work right forever right? So surgery really is the only option, unless we wanna get the tendon cut? Like the tendon, does it grow back or something?

Just cutting the tendon won't provide a complete correction, but it can relieve symptoms. The tendon usually heals with a fibrous tissue connecting the ends. It's not stretchy in those areas like a tendon should be. Even so, it's a good first step if you're concerned about surgery.

Very possible. The same mechanics that cause a bunion can also cause a hammer toe to form.
