This is the best advice I’ve ever heard. I just had bunion surgery four months ago, but my doctor didn’t fix my hammer toes, which I also wanted. I was told I have to get things fixed one a time. I’m still in pain four months later. I don’t think I’m moving forward to another surgery. Almost 60, recovery is super hard.

Finally, somebody who knows what he is talking about. My podiatrist said to exercise my flexors. Showed me the towel pull which I mistakenly thought was pulling my toes. (Every web site, until I found yours, gave toe exercises) And I have exercised my toes for months. To no avail except, perhaps, to keep them limber. I am so glad I stumbled onto this tutorial.

Your video is by far the most comprehensive I’ve seen. You cover so many types of ailments and I love that your primary emphasis is on self correction at home. You do go over surgical remedies however it’s clear your focus is on helping people and not on promoting surgery when not needed. You’re educating people and you’re equipping people to be able to heal themselves and to have the ability to choose the right course of action for their needs. Well Done!

I got my hammer toes from wearing orthotics for two decades…. Orthotics tip your foot forward, making your toes grip down abnormally strongly. I instantly felt relief and saw improvement when I ditched the orthotics and started bending my toes downward. At the same time I started wearing a huge spacer next to my big toe, which took care of the bunion, which was the reason I started wearing orthotics to begin with. Plus I am now wearing Xero shoes, which have a zero drop. All these things together are making me feel so much better!

I have recently been diagnosed with a hammer toe. It's not too bad yet. But I definitely want to avoid surgery. Your information makes total sense to me. It's not about the TOE as much as it is about the muscles on the bottom of the foot, the ankle, calf, knee and hip. It's why my knee on that leg hurts. (also, I live in flip flops...yikes!) Stretching the toes makes no sense to me. I am going to use your approach and I'll let you know about my progress. Thanks for this well timed information!

I am 76 male with awful bunion on R/foot. My foot slipped down a rock ledge very hard and within a short time my second toe became clawed, but not underneath, with pain on the ball of my foot. Tried to get an appointment with my podiatrist, but had to wait 2.5 weeks. He took Xrays and put a bottom cast on my foot and gave me a shoe that was more like a straight plank. He said the claw toes do not go back to normal. From watching you, I thought they would.

Great information! Very helpful in understanding the real causes of hammertoes and how to treat them. Best explanation I've ever seen. It gets to the root of the problem. One question, Dr. Tom, are you familiar with Foot Chair Orthotics? They have an adjustable arch. I have been using them. I sometimes use Powerstep Pinnacle Maxx also. But for some reason, the Powerstep Pinnacle Maxx become very uncomfortable around the lateral part of my ankle, just under the ankle bone, after wearing them for a few hours. For treating hammertoe, which of these two orthotics would be best -- FootChair or Powerstep Pinnacle Maxx? Thanks very much!

A phenomenal video, perhaps the best I have seen so far!! I have overactive flexors causing my right big toe (and occasionally the adjacent toe or toes) to curl, resulting from a stroke that occurred 7.5 years ago. I've had a normal arch since childhood but had claw toes since, before 10yo. I've got duck feet. Narrow heel and wide toe area. By the time length was good it would slip off my skinny heel. I also had big and hard to fit feet. So not knowing better I scrunched my toes in tight to make them fit the shape and size of shoes. My mom would get exasperated every time when nothing would fit. I learned to fake a shoe fit so I wouldn't go home with no shoes at all. I have been stretching and splinting my claw toes for about a year, off and on. I go barefoot as much as possible. Even wearing socks are a bit of a setback, coaxing my toes to curl up again. For a couple months anything touching the underside of my toes felt so unnatural and sensitive. Now I think they are 80% better. My right foot is a bit bigger and so those small toes have needed more work. I wish I had started this transformation sooner. I feel so much more grounded and....normal!

I beg to differ in regards to what you say that its only the smaller toes that are classified as Hammer Toes and that the big toe is a bunion toe! All of my toes are Hammer/Claw Toes and the biggest toe is the worst without bunion! Your video has just described my condition, i.e, I have bone fusion due to arthritis as my toes, especially the big right toe cannot be straightened at all. I was offered surgery by way of inserting a pin to straiten the toe but declined due to age! Great video, Thanks 👍👏

I had two bunion surgeries each big toe side, 20 years apart. First surgery no cast just the big surgery shoe and it healed beautifully but painful because I didn’t rest as told. Second surgery different doctor. He broke it to reset it and the ugly scar on top of foot rather than on side hidden like my left foot. Got a cast made for foot and crutches 4 months. Pain was manageable but a shooting pain for a year and toe is slightly longer and foot always puffy. Scar still red after 3 years. I have trouble fitting shoes. The bunion was not worse than the first if anything it was smaller. Why he had to break the bone to reset a bunion? I don’t know… and he retired soon after.

How'd I get a mallet toe? Not sure. I was born with bad hips, so severely pigeon toed that my feet turned inside-backwards. Had shoes on braces that connected them to each other, and they would tighten them more each month (this only worn at night). Didn't walk until I was 3.5 yrs old. (I'm also on the spectrum - if you couldn't tell by now. We have a tendency to walk more on our tip toes.) Anyway, I had to wear my shoes on the opposite feet until 2nd grade - to try to straighten them - as they wanted to curve in. Worked 34 years on concrete. Now, all I wear are sketchers with memory foam. I do have a mallet toe I am trying to deal with. I came here because I am wondering what works best for those? (The dip joint bends down, and I end up walking on the very tippy tip of that second toe bone. Brutal.) Ok, so I'll stretch, calf raises and go back to practicing walking more.

Thanks for the video. I would say static stretching muscles doesn't work too well. Shape changes tend to work better. Check out Zac Cupples videos for reasoning/references and exercises. I've had a hammer toe on my right foot since I was a kid. I also got shin splints and plantir facitisis. I think it was from poorly fitting shoes. Why the shoe industry doesn't make damn shoes that are foot shaped is beyond me. It's like a foot binding culture! Thankfully it doesn't cause me pain but recently I started taking up running and would always develop extensor tendonopathy on the top of my foot. As well as addressing my tight calves and center of gravtiy being forward by the exercises mentioned above tranitioning to toe socks and minimalist shoes.

I got claw toes after I had a steel frame and pins on my leg and feet for 6+ months. Its still so uncomfortable even a year or two after my surgery.
