The original context, as far as I understand, was that the Yankee Doodle was being insulted for thinking he was so cool for something so lame. The joke is that Americans would appropriate culture poorly. There's reference to 'macaroni' wigs, which also are called such for their relation to the style of those appropriating Western European aesthetics, just like someone might eat foreign noodles and feel more cultured and cool for it.

Fun Fact, Y'all: “Yankee Doodle,” the song, was actually a propaganda song made by the British to make fun of the Patriots during the American Revolution. This can be seen in every one of the lines of the song, but let’s focus on the main stanza. First off, the name in itself is a poke at the rebels. “Yankee Doodle” was used to show that the Americans (the Yankees) were uneducated and silly, seeing how they had a silly, uneducated-sounding last name like “Doodle.” Then we get to the next part- he went to town “riding on a pony.” This is meant to show that the Yankees (collectively represented by “Yankee Doodle”) were not only uneducated, but also poor since they could not afford a real horse and had to make do with riding to town on a pony. Again, the poke at the rebels. Finally, the last part. It takes a little bit of backstory, but it’s short. Basically, the term “macaroni” was used for many things. Yes, it was a type of pasta, but it also refered to the wealthy British men who tended to travel to Italy when they came of age. They would develop a taste for macaroni pasta that was less well known in England and, as a result, would be refered to as belonging ot the “Macaroni Club” when they returned to England. This translated into a connection between something being Italian or fashionable as being “very maccaroni.” So, coming back to Yankee Doodle, his putting a feather in his hat and calling it “macaroni” was not refering to the pasta directly, but instead it was saying that this “uneducated, poor” Yankee was so naïve that he thought to stick a feather in his hat, a very simple and insignificant act, and equate it to the height of fashion in those days. The more you know, folks. I’m not saying that the song shouldn’t be sung or that it’s bad in any way. The original actually was created a bit before the revolution. During the French and Indian war it was created to mock the colonists who sought to join the British Army. Doodle comes from a Dutch word that essentially translates to yokel, so the Brits were mocking all these people who used to be part of the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam (what became New York). Finally, you are right that in civilian terms macaroni simply referred to any finery, but in the military it had taken on the meaning of marks of rank, whether that be medals, special uniforms or weapons, etc. So, essentially it’s mocking this Yankee hick sticking a feather in his everyday hat and trying to pass himself off as an officer

Karina's brother is a great guy! I was working in the lab with my colleagues on a cure for cancer (have been for quite a while). And while I was talking to my friend on the way back to work, he overheard what we were stumped on and just figured out what to do! He's such a champ that he even went into the lab to make sure it worked, and even had time to take us all out to a group dinner to celebrate!

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night remembering how Karina's brother was an American lawyer and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until 1865, and led the nation through the American Civil War and succeeded in preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, bolstering the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy. Karina's brother really is my favorite of the US presidents. He also helped me write my college applications that one time. He's a great guy.

Man, Karinas brother rocks. I still remember when my grandmother was choking on a chicken bone on an airplane and he did the heimlech on her before jumping off the plane for charity without a parachute pack. Instead of splatting on the ground he just bounced like a rubber ball until he landed back at his house where he signed a cheque in order to ensure that the poor kids got clean water and lunchables. What an amazing guy.
