Today I am using oil pastels and colored pencils to create a fun pumpkin drawing!

Ah this painting really does have a lovely warm and nostalgic feeling. I feel all cozy watching this 🎃🍁🍂 Oil pastels are a lot of fun and I agree with you regarding the sense of immediacy they bring to the table. I haven't used mine in a bit so this made me feel like busting them out and playing with them 😁✨

Hey Claritza!! Thank you!! Colored pencil can be great for adding details over oil pastels, especially when there's lots of tooth to the paper! Which is why I love using sanded paper for my oil pastels!

Love the colors! Do the colored pencils blend well with the oil pastels?

Thank you! They blend surprisingly well, the oil pastels definitely come through a bit stronger but the pencils are great for adding details and if there is a mistake they blend out seamlessly!

Have you found a good solvent-free alternative to OMS yet?

No, I haven't yet. At least not for use on oil pastels. I really like Holbein Meltz for colored pencil, but it doesnt work with my pastels. I plan to try the Chealsea Studio lavender spike oil, but haven't bought it yet because it's a bit pricy. I also hear it had a strong scent, so it might be a drawback. If and when I try it, I will try to do a video about it.

Thank you for the demonstration of your beautiful piece. How do you use a water brush? Do you feel that with solvent? I have never seen this tool before

Thank you for watching! Yes, I fill the waterbrush with solvent. I use a pipette to fill it carefully, and I'm sure the cover is on tightly and that I have cleaned any residue off the outside of the barrel before handling it with my bare hands. It's really convenient so I don't have to have open containers of solvent in the studio while I work.

@laurawalker546 Yes, those work for blending, too! Rubbing alcohol with cotton buds works in a pinch, too, if you don't have solvents!

Thank you for your very informative video. After you have finished you’re a drawing, does it need a final fixative and if so what do you recommend. I’ve avoided soft pastels because they are so delicate and there really isn’t a fixative that protects the surface. And the darker colors often get darker after spraying. If a final spray can be used on oil pastels and oil based colored pencils, will it darker some of the colors? Cheers.

So, for my oil pastel pieces I spray a layer of Krylon workable fixative and then some Krylon spray varnish and I love how it looks. I use light layers and there is no darkening. In general oil pastels don't seem to darken the way soft pastels do and are not nearly as delicate. Speaking of soft pastels, when I use them I use the Sennielier brand fixative for soft pastels and it doesn't darken the soft pastels. It's like magic though it is pricy. They make one for oil pastels too but I haven't tried it yet.

👋 Thank you for your quick reply. I am so excited because I inherited a large variety of oil pastels. Some of the brands are Sakura Cray-Pas, Hi-Cray-Pas, Cray-Pas Chubbies, Pentel, Caran D’Ache Neocolor 1 and Neopastel. I am going to look online to see which are professional grade and how lightfast they are. They were originally purchased in the 1950s and 1960s. They are still soft and lay down well on Pastelmat paper. Cheers once again. Ray 😀

What do you think about this Van Gogh oil pastels??? I was looking for reviews on youtube this days, and just founded 2 videos and the people say that ir so horrible. But in your video, they look so soft and creamy.

I love them!! Right now, they are the brand I use the most. I have a few other brands I want to try, but so far, these work fantastically for the way I like to use them!

I have a hard time using colour pencils on oil pastels whys that?? i feel like the oil pastels scrape off, maybe im applying it too thick?

Part of it could be the paper? I'm not sure. I'm using sanded paper so it allows for more layers so maybe that's why I am having okay luck with pencils on top. I don't have a ton of experience with oil pastels yet and have only been using sanded paper with them so I'm guessing it might be the paper or like you said, maybe you just have thick layers of pastel.

Yeah, I do blend it into the paper a bit and use thin layers. But I'm not sure how others who are more experienced in the medium do it lol.

Same problem, I see many artists who use pencils for adding details but when I try the pastels scratch away 😢
