Thank You, I have been type one since age 12. I am now 67 and since the technology did not exist I have the complications. My doctor has been telling me to consume at least 40 carbs per meal but I started a keto diet and have already lowered my basal 10 units a day. Feeling better and on the path to even lower insulin.

Thanks for the life saving info. Carnivore and keto additionally make life as a Type One immensely more enjoyable. Almost no stress about lows, no more feeling shitty with blood sugar swings and less money spent on insulin :)

I love this intelligent approach to T1 diabetes -- prevent insulin resistance or "double diabetes" in T1 by keeping carbs low. As I approached my 25th year with T1D I noticed insulin resistance happening....weight gain at the belly area and increased insulin requirements. So I further reduced my carbs, dropped wheat, managed my hormones and stopped the insulin resistance in its tracks. Weight returned to normal. Now I have nearly 35 years of T1D and am in great physical shape, still with zero C-peptide (no insulin of my own), and yet...no complications. Hard work, but worth it.

im a 17 y/o t1d myself, and ive been for about 3 years now, and my insulin sometimes isnt that affective, is that insulin resistance? i really would like to try to stay healthy for my whole life

You didn't write about sth and it sounds too optimistic. I'm guessing you still need external insulin since you have zero c-peptide. I have Type 1 diabetes and zero C-peptide and even when I fast I need an external insulin! Therefore, I have a question: Do you experience hypoglycemia during intense physical exercise and how do you deal with it?

People in the world need to be coming to you on a daily basis. I am giving the Carnivore diet a chance. The medical world needs to put you in ALL leadership positions. You are truly INSPIRING. I have had Type 1 for over 24 years/ worked in the medical industry for over 10 years specifically insulin/ insulin pumps ..etc. I have called on many ENDO/Family practice/NP/internal Doctors/ CDE’s and I have NEVER ...heard them talk about the Carnivore Diet. THANK YOU for taking the courage to speak out about this.

Type 1 here, diagnosed 10 years ago and was told I’d need carbs in every meal. I realise now that’s not true, I still eat carbs but in small portions, I’ve realised they’re not the only energy source we need as I was told. I’m taking far less basal and bolus than I ever have, plus I’m (and always have been) very active, I’ve lost weight. At my last check up my BMI is perfect, HBAC1 is 48, last year was 68. All thanks to KZbin specialists and adjustments to my diet.

I’m a LADA…thank you for explaining How to safely have a long life… my hope is you go around the world teaching diabetic doctors how to be good doctors, and really care about the patient, The necessity diabetics to go off unnecessary carbohydrates.. I do believe ultimately it is up to the patient to choose a healthy lifestyle and some will not. It is sad, but I really really am appreciative of delivery how to be a carnivore and a type one diabetic who suffers from type two crap….no carbs for this girl ❤

Thanks for this video Doc!! Love watching more people noticing us (type 1 diabetics) not only t2d. Carnivore is the way to go!! 🥩 usually don't experience lows anymore. And the highest my blood sugar levels can go is only after eating a ribeye can go up to the 120. But usually I keep my blood sugar levels at 85 mg/dL

I read stuff about this still having Risks of ketoacidosis and just want to know all the risks before I keep going with this. Obviously I see a physician but curious about other type 1’s experience. I’ve read three people who had to stop as they still got acidosis despite having insulin during carnivore.

Thank you for the suggestion about whole milk for treating occasional lows. My husband is type 1 and we are low carb, mostly carnivore but I did not know what would be the “best” lowest inflammatory way to bring him up when he has gotten low. Thank you 🙏

Love everything you are saying here. As a T1D for almost 30 years now. I finally started a Carnivore diet after failing to get my body healthy after 3 years of Keto. Wish you were near me, because so many doctors just aren't up-to-date on this line of thought.

1:07 2:46 'so when I'm treating my type 1 diabetics the single first most important number, that no endocrinologist ever checks and that is critical - is KNOW your C-PEPTIDE NUMBER and your INSULIN and your A1C. Because the c-peptide number is critically important to know whether your pancreas is producing any insulin.

I assume that since you have had type I for many years you have c-peptide=0 and take at least some external insulin. Tell me what in the case of hypoglycemia after intense exercise, for example? Then you break the diet rules and take glucose?

@@niezyt I just started mostly carnivore and it’s amazing how my control has improved. With carnivore I don’t have the swings of glucose hardly at all but yes I will typically eat some fruit if needed. Yes I have to take insulin still but it’s getting less and less. I assume I will always need at least some long acting insulin just to keep my baseline in the normal range, I’ve already been able to cut back quite a lot and I haven’t ramped up exercise yet. I will have to be prepared for that and likely decrease long acting insulin again at that point.

@@Dan23_7 Almost none, obviously if I have a low sugar event then yes I will typically opt for a little fruit. Even my lows are far less frequent though because my sugars are so level now with carnivore. (Almost total carnivore but just started)

Yes! This is exactly the info I was looking for. Once I went keto I noticed times when it seemed the insulin did nothing, like something was blocking it. But only type 2's get insulin resistance right!? Not! The longer I've stayed keto the resistance keeps decreasing thankfully, and most lows are treated with 2 or 3 sugar packets, roughly 10 grams of carbs only.

I drink coffee and notice that my insulin intake isn't as effective as it is in the afternoons. My dawn phenomenon last longer, too. I wonder if it's due to stress hormone response to coffee in the mornings. I consume 3 cups in the mornings.

Really wish this was more widely accepted. I know many diabetics and the idea of not eating sugars/carbs seems taboo to them. Also thanks for helping me understand on a greater level! Never did I piece together that the reason a diabetic can go extremely low is from the insulin that was injected. I see people loading up on pure fructose and then it swings dramatically in the opposite direction into the 200’s 😷

Protein does raise glucose just slightly, being enough to keep it stable but of course not overdoing it. So consuming glucose should definitely not be necessary, unless you can’t get to some carnivore food.

Do you have an explanation video on blood counts? High and low and explain what one should do when blood count is "example low 3.7? I'm a carnivore( strictly meat,eggs,fish)and this happen to me recently! All I could think of was "have something sweet!"

First of all, great videos. I've switched to a carnivore diet as a Type 1 and almost instantly (3 days) have a very stable blood sugar (something I haven't seen since diagnosed). The problem for me as a Type 1 is exercise and work. For instance if I'm helping someone move or doing high activity work in the yard, I can very quickly go on a low. Before carnivore I would "juice up" as I called it. Drinking high sugar content (juice or energy drinks) before doing the work to prevent lows. The activity also acts against my high levels for hours/days afterward. It will be interesting to see how this is affected with carnivore. I'm guessing the first time I work hard at something physically, I'm going to be needing some sugar. Milk definitely won't cut it in these circumstances as I'd usually be intaking 150-300g of carbs on a 12 hour day for instance to prevent a low. Any advice from anyone here would be greatly appreciated, but I guess I'll just have to stick with juice of some type. Trying to figure out how my carnivore diet will look when having to consume sugar/carbs for exercising each day (weights), and how that will effect my body coming out of ketosis and burning the sugars instead. Its all a learning process for me at the moment but look forward to a brighter future.

Cut your insulin before upcoming high activity, been type 1 36 yrs next week and been lifting hard for 40, I definitely cut my insulin and eat a little extra as some cheap insurance.

@@blsrulz Thanks for the reply... counter-intuitively I've found on Carnivore the exact opposite of what I've noticed my entire diabetic life.... when I work out, my Insulin spikes... so much sometimes that it takes all day to get it back down. This is with zero food intake (or drink) no carbs whatsoever, just water and fasting.

I'm afraid of the same thing, but you already have 2 months of experience, can you tell me more today? With Type 1 and c-peptide = 0, you still need to take external insulin, even minimal amounts of long-acting insulin, so the risk of hypoglycemia still exists. Do you experience hypoglycemia during intense physical exercise? If you have what you do, break the rules of the diet and take glucose?

@@trevoC132 I used to train at high level rowing (national championship level) and what I learned was your b.s can spike super high (and artificially stay there with a long cool off period) or it can drop dramatically. It all depended on the intensity, type of training and duration. For example cardio and long endurance sessions would lower it for me, heavy weight training would raise it. You gotta run experiments on yourself and see what type of training does what to your sugars dude and plan accordingly. Hope this helps.

I really wish I had a doctor here that could help me with all this. I have complications because I’ve been a diabetic since I was 10 years old. I’ve had wounds on my ankle because of collapsed veins. But they say to add salt to everything when eating keto and carnivore. Is this bad for me? Does it worsen my leg condition? Thanks.

My c peptide is .13. My Dr. just tested my GAD antibodies. They were very high, so latent onset 1.5, it is. Meat and veggies will be my best friends from here on out.

So i did Carnivore for over 2 years and i had gotten to a real sweet spot, i wasnt craving carbs and my blood sugars were very stable....but then i started getting very very insulin resistant and my basal rate was going up. It was scary and I was doing the diet correctly.

What is your opinion on the reversal of damage to the blood vessels and nerves that are caused by the hyperglycemia that you speak of here? Do you think think that is possible to repair the microvascular damage that occurs as a result of the glycation, or is the damage permanent?

N=1 here. I suffered a lot of damage from high blood sugar before my LADA diagnosis; A1c in excess of 16% for who-knows-how-long. microvascular damage, periheral neuropathy, kidney damage, retina venous damage and horrid problems with digestion. All seem to be reversing (the kidneys now look normal) after 10 months of maintaining normal blood sugar. A1c of 5% and average blood glucose of 88mg/dl with a good standard deviation (minimal swings). I believe it can be done if the damage didn't go on too long but only if you can normalize your blood glucose. But it always takes more time to fix something than it takes to break it. There is no quick fix or magic supplement that I know of. The glycation depends on the tissues effected. Connective tissues have a long lifespan and are replaced very slowly over a period of years. Blood cells recycle in 90 days so it varies.

@Drake Santiago, I will second the comment by @Paul Pladin. The body tends to heal this damage over time if the blood glucose is normalized and insulin levels are low. Every tissue has a time frame for recovery, with nerves taking a bit longer to heal. However, you can help it along. Here are a few of the things that can assist in repairing complications: 1) Benfotiamine (fat soluble Vitamin B1). Check out videos on this, as complications seem to look a lot like Beri Beri, which is a B1 deficiency. 2) Alpha Lipoic Acid (this tends to help with neurological damage (peripheral neuropathy), while helping to lower blood sugars). Also, don't forget to add iodine to your regimen if you have this problem. 3) B Complex vitamin as well as a Multi-Mineral supplement with zinc to cover all bases, since we all have some deficiencies.

Im currently goi g thru this now. Im noticing the protien is Cuasing my blood sugar to go up. But over all the fluctuations are getting tighter. But im having issues getting below 130's and staying down there. But im poor and dont have a CGM and i inject. No pump. So i feel like im guessing alot.

I'm T1 LADA my A1C when last checked was 5.8. I exercise at least 5 days a week and I've significantly cut down on carbs from how I used to but still have at least ~150g of carbs/day. My macros are ~40% carbs 30% fat 30% protein. I use a g6 cgm and omnipod. With that out of the way, I have basically had to figure out most of the ways I manage things by myself. Nutritionists have been a waste of time and money for me as well as my own endocrinologist. She's better than the one I first had but I feel like I'm not getting anywhere with what I explain to her. I stay in a "normal" range pretty consistently but I feel like there's still more I can do. I'm pretty harsh on myself as far as trying my damndest to stay in range. I'd love to try carnivore but for one, it's more expensive. and second, I'm worried about my blood sugar dropping and spiking more. I've noticed that when I eat something like bacon my blood sugar will slowly rise for the next 6-8 hours (from the fat I assume) and it's difficult to judge what I should set my basal to or what I should bolus for when I do.

If you're using an Omni pod, you're using the wrong kind of insulin to cover protein (bacon). The rapid acting insulin is rising too quickly to match the slow rise in blood sugar from the protein. Read The Diabetes Solution by Dr. Richard Bernstein. Life saver, as is Dr. Cywes!

I have been a T1 LADA for 30 years. I was listed as a type 2 in my medical charts until I discovered it a year ago. I have done a low carb diet since 2004 following Dr. Richard Bernstein’s book Diabetes Solution and it changed my life. Like you all of my doctors and nurses have been useless and I have had to learn on my own. Currently I’m trying a carnivore diet. It is NOT the fat in bacon that can be converted to glucose, but rather some of the protein. The fat is converted to ketones when it is used for energy; but the glycogen in your liver has to be depleted before your body will turn to fat for energy. I believe your liver is creating glucose from the stored glycogen and that glycogen is being replenished by the carbohydrates you are eating. Your liver is going to constantly supply glucose to your bloodstream and your blood sugars will slowly rise. The purpose of the basal insulin is to counteract that slow rise by slowing adding a constant small amount of insulin at the same time. People with a pump can have it programmed to add a steady low amount every hour or you can inject long-acting insulin which is supposed to be adsorbed into your bloodstream at a steady rate over long period of time. Look up ketosis, ketogenesis, glycogenolysis, glycogen synthesis, and dawn phenomenon.

@@mplsfarmer thanks. I actually switched to a carnivore diet in about October 2022. For the most part, I've gotten my numbers even better than they were before when I posted this a year or so ago. Cutting out the oatmeal and other junk I was eating has made me feel significantly better overall. I'm probably too hard on myself with keeping my numbers in check but, at the least I definitely do feel better. I also have less of my diabetic neuropathy pain (can't recall if I mentioned that in my post). I'm almost 6 months in at this point and I have no plans of stopping either. I hope that going carnivore has had good results for you as well.

Hi Doc, My little girl who’s almost three years old got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last week and needless to say my wife and I were besides ourselves. Being from the UK we are both extremely skeptical of the NHS and I spent many a night arguing with the doctors regarding the need to force feed by little girl carbs unnecessarily and then having to subsequently inject her with insulin before diagnosing her. Can I ask how to measure/test C peptide and A1C, as I am skeptical she even has diabetes BUT I am totally open to it if that’s the reality. I just don’t believe enough screening or assessing was made. Much love 🇬🇧

Ask your doctor to do those tests. You may have to pay...I don't know all the rules over there. If s/he refuses to do the tests, take your business elsewhere. In the US, you can walk into a lab and ask for/pay for the tests. Get her on a carnivore diet NOW! You can always modify it later as her condition warrants. Good luck!

I had ketoacidosis but that happens when you have super high blood sugar levels not enough insulin and ketones.. in this case you will not have high blood sugar levels!! I've been following ketocarnivore for 15months and haven't had any problems. A1C 5.1 %. Will start doing now the Paleolithic ketogenic diet from paleomedicina Hungary! They've done a few studies where t1d cant get off insulin

@@VerySeriousUser yes!! Excess of ketones and not enough insulin for which you get high blood sugar levels. Usually ketones in the state of ketosis don't get as high as when you have ketoacidosis. Always gotta check your doctor and see how it's everything going.

Learn: ketoacidosis will only occur in the absence of insulin, okay? Even if the patient has a high carb diet with recurrent hyperglycemia, if using insulin it is impossible to enter the state of ketoacidosis, insulin cancels the high ketone production necessary for a ketoacidosis, as simple as that.

Did you find a good answer? I’ve read instances where some type 1s doing carnivore kept taking insulin but eventually still got insulin resistance like a type 2 and ended up in ketoacidosis. The fact I’ve read from three different type 1’s is causing me to worry about long term. I’m already doing this but curious if anyone’s encountered this issue?

Im a type 1 I’m doing my Due diligence on the carnivore diet now before I commit. In your opinion , would a long term (over two years) carnivore diet hypothetically give the body a chance to rebuild beta cell function if no carbs are present ?

I'm a type 1 diabetic , I need to lose weight as well,. I have 10 autoimmune disorders,. I don't know any person on a keto or carnivour diet. I used to be on a keto diet but then ended up in hospital and in physical crash, so put onto insulin. I'm struggling with everything physical, chronic pain and stiffness.

I’m type 1. I have to dose for my carnivore diet….tho not as much as for straight carbs. Fat too. Protein and fat acts more slowly but will rise and stay high longer.

If you’re having carbs too, the fat and protein will “hide” the carbs then release them causing a high, maybe after your bolus has timed out. But there has been new evidence that proteins and fats do raise blood sugar.

In guess with Type you will still need to dose very small amounts of external insulin because your c-peptid is 0 which is common for long-term Type 1. I would like to ask you if hypoglycemia is possible with intense exercise on carnivore diet?

If the pancreas isn't making insulin, the liver produces more endogenous glucose from fats and protein because glucagon may be high. Insulin has more than one function in the body.

@@niezyt thx for this. It’s weird but for me (and many other type 1s with intense exercise in the AM -especially fasted-my bs goes through the roof, for a few hours-then takes a sharp nosedive. I have to be careful 24/7. If I eat before and dose for the food, it still goes up. But the rest of the day I watch like a hawk. If I just take long walks it’s fine. I love exercising intensely but just have to be careful. I learned to dose for protein and fat differently (small in layers) and it helps.

From what I've gathered (researching for younger brother), this advice is very good in dealing with T1 as a general issue. With the specific circumstances (e.g. high intensity training) it is much more difficult and my brother struggles with the same issue. I'm considering trying this carnivore diet during his off season, where I will try to stabilise his blood sugars as best as possible, and then implement amounts of training at an increasing rate while monitoring his BGL constantly. I don't have any other ideas at the moment

@@annaak7849 Completely moved away from this. He is now eating a lot more calories (approx 3500) and a lot more carbs (300-500g daily), sometimes having to inject 6 or 7 times a day. All we focus on is keeping BGL in range. If that means taking 7 insulin shots, that's what we do. His BGL has been much better recently and his 90 day average was 6.4. He still gets spikes in BGL during sports; we just monitor before and during and administer insulin as required. During the weeks that his BGL is in range over 90% of the time, his spikes in blood sugar are definitely a lot less frequent and not as bad.

I am type 1 diabetic for about 10 years I also have Hashimotos & MS. I am worried that I am on no insulin on Carnivore as my sugar is only around 5.5 it doesn’t go high ever it’s only been 4 weeks now but I am confused as to how this is happening. I had gad antibodies & was definitely diagnosed as Type 1. I check my sugar heaps & it just doesn’t go up enough to take insulin

Have you tested your key tone levels? Curious if you are experiencing larger amounts of key tones. Part of my hesitancy in trying this diet is knowing my history of eating no carb/fasting and that leading to a similar experience and risk of DKA

@@sylvanstreightiff hi I just tested and I am acqua on the green chart 0. On the peach to purple ones I am in between traces & faible 0.5-1.5 in between it’s a pale peachy pink. I don’t know if that means I’m not in ketosis but I am sticking to it & have lost weight I am at about 6 weeks now.

My fiance is type 1 and had a hard time keeping sugars stable before we recently switched to a ketogenic diet with plans to transition to carnivore. Her sugars are now a lot more stable. However, she has a much harder time lowering her blood sugar and is now feeling very discouraged and worried. I read that consuming a leaner source of protein can help reduce insulin resistance. We have been eating fatter meats since we cut out carbs... Do you think that eating leaner could be the answer? She wants to give up on carnivore and reintroduce more fruits and veggies.

There is an empirical formula which can be applied and modified depending on level of IR for carb consumption but no such formula for protein. This makes insulin management more hit and miss on carnivore. Your comments are valid in theory by virtue of the low numbers but do not guarantee no insulin excursions due to lack of control and knowledge gluconeogenesis

There are formulas for dosing for protein, Dr. Bernstein covers this in detail. The big problem is the time of action for protein versus carbs. The modern fast acting insulin analogs were developed in the context of the high carb nutritional advice that is currently in place. Humalog and Novolog do not match well in time to protein. I have gone back to regular human insulin (Novolin R) for meal bolus and it has been working very well for me.

Personally I find it much more "hit and miss" in matching insulin to carbs on a daily basis than insulin to protein. I can test a half unit for a typical protein meal and move up if needed. As the saying goes, "small doses make for small mistakes." I don't go low very often.

@@paulpladin9590 For me, the Novolog works in a timely manner for protein....particularly for chicken, fish and pork. Beef needs a longer mode of action, so I use a square bolus over 2 hours. I wish I could go back on regular insulin, but I found Novolin to be much like injecting water...even on a carnivore diet. I found Novolog significantly more effective in my body. It makes me wonder if we each react differently to the adjuvants in the insulin. Novolin as I recall has more Metacresol than Phenol as an antimicrobial. Both are nasty poisons, but the body may put up an allergic fuss or antibodies over one type versus another. (T1D with Zero C - Peptide, 34+ years)

I disagree with the doc on hypoglycemic corrections "you may need some sugar to treat...". I know that some carnivores do this but I don't agree with it. Sugar kills the pancreas. It is the reason diabetes exists in the first place; particularly in more processed forms. Avoid it at all costs. Use meat to treat your lows. You shouldn't have too many dramatic lows on an all-meat diet anyway. I have also had many seeming 'lows' (low 50s - 70 range) that had absolutely no symptoms at all. I did not treat them... and my blood either stayed the same or rose slightly. I have been on a carnivore diet for 9 months now, and have only reverted to sugar (chocolate) once to treat a hypoglycemic problem. It took at least 3-4 weeks for my bloods to stay strictly within the non-diabetic range again (some would argue that this would be due to a glucagon surge at the time of the hypo... but I'd suggest that it is perhaps a combination of this and new damage to the pancreatic cells). Most say that diabetes cannot be cured but I believe it is not cured 'rapidly' (a few months to a few years, with great self-discipline) for many because of this reversion to sugar when treating hypos. If absolutely desperate I'd say he has it right when he says use milk. The fattier and the more untreated the better... but, for me, that would be an utterly last resort (a low of less than 50 with quite severe side effects). What I do agree on is the c-peptide notion he talks about. And I'm going to speak to my diabetic nurse about this, so that I can get a clear reading on this. Thanks for the info!!

Now she is convinced ( by her medical staff) she can't be on carnivore diet due to the ketones. Is it so? Could her ketones be to high or in a way it could possibly harm her? Big hug🤗

I have been testing this theroy for some years now (been type1 for 49 yrs) ketones are good, once you are ketoadapted and fat-burning, you also won't be as affected by lows because your brain is using ketones for fuel... you may still feel less than great, but you won't loose your ability to think logically.... we have been getting the wrong information about ketones the whole time. the good information is finally available for all :)

Im a type 2 diabetic been diabetic 17 years. Went carnivore 2, years ago now I've had to go on insulin as my diabetes is that bad. I've also got to much protein in my liver and non alcoholic fatty liver. I'm going blind aswel. Not sure if my diabetes was declining anyway. I've got seveare nuropathy in my legs I can hardly walk a few yards without burning and pain. Carnivore is way to much protein and fat for me. I've done intimitent fasting. Prolonged fasting. Hate being on insulin but it's the only way my diabetes will go down. I've been advised it may be my cortisol levels. I don't heal from ops or cuts. Thin apart from my beer belly. Don't drink. Fat Face... Lossing alit of muscle mass. I was a bodybuilder once and powerlifter. not now.

If the only thing we used to measure successful diabetes management was average BGs and a flat line on the CGM, then I could understand advocating the Carnivore diet. But to not recognize the value of plant food, of the nutrients in all colorful fruits and vegetables, vitamins and minerals that are entirely missing in animal food (for instance, manganese), I'm willing to sacrifice a little A1C for a balanced healthful diet. Since it has to be a diet that I can live with for my entire life, I want the variety of foods available to me, with particular emphasis on "eating the rainbow". (AIC 5.8. I exercise hard daily. 68 y.o.)

Doctors can preach all they want but truthfully we may never truly know what the correct thing is to do. There are many camps that beieve glucose is the bodys form of fuel and fat blocks insulins ability to do its job. Contributing to fatty liver and insulin resistance. ITs really hard to tell. But in truth the complexity of the human body and its cellular functions may never truly be understood. Case in point many americans eat a diet high in refine carbs as well as fat (basically refined grains and dairy ie cheese) And type 2 diabetes is soaring. If you are recommending i eat nothing but animal protein and lettuce and remove antioxidant rich foods like fruit just because i will see better blood sugar numbers in the short term i cannot get on board with that. Ultimately what we need to be working towards is finding the correct human diet for humans and if that is meat okay but if that is fruit and low fat we need to accept our T1D and adminster insulin accordingly like a normal pnacreas should do until new insulin therapies ie stem cells replace the use of exogenous insulin.

Fruit is nothing but sugar you don’t need it, stop eating that. Also stop eating high carb vegetables. Those turn sugar in the body. potatoes corn carrots etc. Also cow milk is nothing but sugar. It’s meant to make the calves fat. Adult humans don’t need that either. You can look it up. I guarantee you, if you make these small changes, you will reduce your insulin.
