I am in permanent ketosis. Still alive because first stage 4 lung cancer gone 7yrs . Now have 6 brain tumours (shrinking) gave me 3wks. Going on 5mths and getting stronger, few mental issues though. Cancers cannot use ketones as a fuel - not a high fat diet now but still maintaining ketosis. Also lost 60kg weight. Insulin fairly consistent 4.2/4.5 bgl.

Last year I rode 2,005 miles on my stationary bike, and only lost about 3 or 4 pounds. I felt so frustrated that I didn’t lose more, but realize now it’s because I was still eating high amounts of carbs which caused my insulin to spike constantly. Since starting keto a few months ago, I’ve lost 15 pounds and can attest that the enhanced mental clarity that comes with it is legit. This has been LIFE CHANGING and I am so grateful!

Hi Dr Cywes!! 2 Questions, as you know I was fat adapted from 2007-2011 or 2012. After years of relapses since, on & off my low carb way of eating (months at a time of each)... Has going back & forth from being 100%fat adapted back then to not, what impact does that have on the body? Also wondering if getting back to fat adaptation now after having been fat adapted back then will take longer this time around? I’m asking because this time around I lost 8 pounds the first week & then was down about 13 total in the first 6 weeks... but now at almost 14 weeks I’m still back & forth between a 13-15 pound total loss. My total carbs are usually under 20 and have only exceeded the 30 pound ceiling once this entire time. Just curious after watching this video if it’s possible that maybe I’m just not fully fat adapted & there a chance that within the coming weeks I can expect weight loss. Thanks in advance. :)

I am a type 2 diabetic. I started Keto and was on it for 2 months. My blood sugar before keto was 355 untreated. Metformin only brought it down to the high 200's. My A1C was 10.5. I started Keto after 1 month of using Metformin. This got my blood sugar down to the 160's to 180's. I was switched to Januvia (100mg) and Glipizide (5mg). No change in my blood sugar readings. I had fallen into the net carbs over total carbs way of thinking. Then I found the Carnivore way of eating. after 2 weeks on the Carnivore way of eating I just tested at 107 for blood glucose tonight. That is the lowest blood glucose reading I have had since being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. My last A1C was 7.8 and that was only 3 months after the 10.5 A1C. Between you, Dr. Ken Berry and Dr. Shawn Baker, I have been learning a lot more than I have from my doctor. I do have to say this about my doctor. When I told her about the dietary changes she did not discourage me from this way of eating. To quote her " This is working for you so keep it up". From what I have seen, her opinion is in the minority among the medical field.

This is the best explanation of fat adaptation I've ever heard. All you usually hear from the influencers (even some of the doctors) is "ketosis, ketosis, ketosis!" Few of them talk about fat adaptation, which is much more important. They just say "As long as your triglycerides are low and your HDL is high, don't worry." I wanted to know WHY I shouldn't worry, and you just told me in a way I could understand. I will admit, I got lost when you were just spouting off numbers, but then you explained it and it made perfect sense. I'm just about to start transitioning from a high-fruit sugar Mediterranean diet to Carnivore, and I really needed to hear this. Thank you so much!

This explanation helped me too! I am just over 100 days on carnivore after years of sugar addiction and I have gone through the stages almost exactly as he described. I had to teach my body to adjust to using fat instead of sugar and I had to learn how to know the feeling of being truly satisfied. Now I eat two high fat carnivore meals a day (mostly eggs and beef cooked in tallow) and I can go hours without feeling hungry. Hope that helps you in your journey.

I’m 140 days into this fat adaptation lifestyle. To get over carnivore issues like constipation and lethargy, eating fat is critical. I eat two meals a day of around 100grams of beef fat along with various medium protein intake and the last 3 weeks the reintroduction of crucifers and some leafy greens and some, not many nuts. Strictly sugar free and very low carbs….it took me about 3 months to totally adapt where I felt my body was feeling good and I could function normally with good energy levels. It’s a physical and also a mental process that requires staying the course and finding a fat source that is good quality. I’ve lost at least 8kgs but inflammation has decreased and I feel pretty good for a skinny 69yr old.

I slowly adapted to a keto diet and never experienced any downside. I am 66 years old and lost 54 pounds in 6 months. I was diagnosed as pre type 2 diabetic and prescribed metformin twice daily. After 6 months my bloodwork came back with excellent results and my doctor said I could quit the metformin and we will continue to monitor. I am on the journey to becoming 'fat adaptive' and loving the scenery as the journey continues. It is a lifestyle change but once you adapt the advantages are evident. My energy level has increased, mental clarity honed, sleep quality much enhanced, joint inflammation has subsided by 80-90% so arthritis conditions have greatly improved, no more Aleve twice daily! The food tastes great and the grocery bill has reduced even though I am eating better quality of food. No snacks, no junk, no sodas, no sweets not junk food binges, but still enjoy the social aspect of going out and tipping a few drinks with friends. Oh, my golf game has improved substantially! LOL

I’m 51, and went from 200 down to 145 in 5 months on a keto diet. I do have cravings for chocolate (never did previously particularly like chocolate) but eat quite a few calories each day, all while losing weight. Normal breakfast is 4 eggs, and a meat, with plain tea. At 10 am I have two hard boiled eggs. At lunch I have about 20oz of steak, or chicken, or a chef salad. My blood pressure and joint pain are effectively “cured”.

I just turned 53 - over weight (25-30lbs lingering for years!) I started having joint pain in last few mos. Been on keto 3 weeks now, joint pain a lot less. Seemed to have more energy better focus. I havent loss but a few lbs. its as if my body is holding on tight to the 30lbs overweight!!! I have been on high blood pressure meds since my 40s. My blood pressure is a bit lower. I look forward to continuing on this journey to see where it leads me. Definitely feel a lot better not eating carbs.

When I started carnivore, I was doing it for weight loss. Because it wasn't instant, I did more digging and research and changed my thinking. I am on a journey to heal my liver and the weight-loss will take care of itself! It's working! Down 17 pounds this month. I make a donation so you can keep providing excellent content! I approach your videos like it's a lecture, with pen and paper for notes. I have learned so much! I am enthused by your obvious passion for the truth! I work in an ER. I see first hand the utter destruction of humanity via "a pill for every ill". I see women younger than myself with a HUGE list of diagnosis starting with type 2 diabetes, morbidly obese, and on so many medications. I can't help but become unhappy with my chosen profession. Most of what I see in the ER's now is preventable. So sad. And all people want are pills to "cure" whatever it was that brought them to the ER in the first place.

According to Diamond, liver detoxes 4am-12 so I eat fruit on empty stomach since 2022. Lately questioning this and learning about vegetables toxins and carnivore. I’m a bloodtype B. I agree with Dr Paul Saladino to eat fruit and meat and cut out carbs. Have a great day! 💖😊🍉

Purely anecdotal: After 60 years of carb addiction, I think it took about 5 months to become fat adapted. Now in month seven of the keto lifestyle, my body is a fat burning MACHINE. I’m currently 175 lbs, down from 250. As a masters sculler, I thank you Dr. Cywes for these videos. And so does my fine boat (racing shell)!

@@fatillacing4131 For decades I got away with 220, 230 and 240 because I 'carried it well' as a big strong active guy, but no normal old guy can pull off 250. That was my breaking point. I always told myself that size 38 pants were as big as I would ever go and I couldn't button them fresh out of the dryer (shrinkage). I was about 60 pounds overweight 3 weeks ago and I have 40 to go. It will be a gradual but healthy 40. I'm shooting for 185 by the end of 2023. By then I will have accepted this lifestyle permanently (positive thinking) and will keep my carb addition in check for my remaining decade or two on this planet.

Just get rid of simple carbs and focus on resistant starches. Rice and beans, legumes. If you never eat your meat by itself and always have it mixed in with resistant starches you will get full fast, stay full longer, and your gut will be teeming with beneficial bacteria. Rice that has been cooked and cooled, potatoes that have been cooked and cooled, they don't affect blood sugar the way classically demonized carbs do.

Sounds great! The last person I would be taking advice from on being in Ketosis is a doctor like this one. The guy is obviously not in good shape and knows nothing about nutrition and Ketosis. Of course your body takes time to adapt to burning when in ketosis. But you have to get your body in ketosis to start burning fat. This guy is stating an obvious fact to create a video to put on youtube. People who are serious about working out have known this for years and no one reputable has said that you start burning fat right away. It really is ridiculous when someone like this guy makes a video like this knowing that. Especially when he is not in good shape to even know about burning fat.

Excellent. I really didn't understand that it took months to actually get fully fat adapted. But it makes all kinds of sense when I think of all the crap I've eaten over the last 67 years. An addiction model is exactly the right example! My wife and I got through the Ketosis flu rather easily and have been doing intermittent fasting, working our way to one meal per day. Definitely have our eye on the long term ... we can't keep going the way we were!

I never had any problem switching to ketosis. I never had the Keto flu. After a month of starting Low Carb, it was easy to do zero carbs. My body seems to want to be in this state naturally and I lost over 10 pounds a month for the last 6 months. Sometimes people have a hard time with it and sometimes they don’t. I don’t know what makes the difference between people, but it’s possible that you can get into ketosis without any issues. I’m now learning more towards ketovore and switched out fiber foods for meat so that my total carbs are near zero. That’s really helped keep me in OMAD and feel more full before I even get close to my calorie count for the day.

8 weeks ago I just decided I was eating no more carbs. Chucked them all out. Yeah it's been a bit rough at times but my philosophy is a bit of suffering does you good. I feel a lot better these days, already lost 10kgs (93kg to 82.9kg) and I feel adaptation through my energy levels. I eat in a 7 hour window one main meal and a smaller second one. It suits me fine, and I can see myself staying on this because I know I'm eating fuel and nutrition now instead of that awful crap I was subjecting my body to before. My abs will come back in a few months! 55 year old and got my buzz back. 👍👍

@@royevans4581 I can barely fast 14 hours per day even though I am eating mostly meat and fatty meat now plus some high fat dairy. I prefer lean meat and from the time I was young I never used butter or ate the fat on meat. I was always thin and athletic but a few years ago I got bronchitis after my roommate's mother smoked two packs of cigarettes a day in our apartment. The air was dark gray with smoke when I would return from the university! Since then I have had bloating and stomach issues after taking the course of antibiotics that my physician prescribed to clear up the bronchitis. I used keto to lose that bloating and the bloating seems to be reduced, but now I am putting on weight! I know that Dr. Cywes would say that I am eating too much protein. Dr. Eric Westman would say that I am eating too much fat. And Dr. Ken Berry would say that I should give up eating all dairy. But eating four slices of cheese is one of the few ways that I can consume more fat without feeling sick to my stomach.

I am in remission from Grave’s disease , ( after having gained 70 lbs from medication and carbs ), I developed eczema after starting keto, which I haven’t had since I was 12 yrs old.. I’m 58 now, but it has since gone away too! I thought maybe I was detoxing , the reason for the rash. 🤷🏻♀️. My skin tags have disappeared!!! I am simply amazed!!! I started keto 3 years ago in October 2019, went from 100 kg to 80, but know I didn’t start to feel fat adapted for at least 6 months. I felt really strong and energetic for the following two years. About 6 months ago I began a push to lose belly fat but not burn muscle by eating only meat cheese whilst lifting weights upping the weight regularly. I got down to 72 kg, but my energy wasn’t as good. I believe I had to rely more upon dietary fat because I had less body fat. Right now I’m back to 75 kg and holding that weight easily having put vegetable back into my diet. This is the first explanation that gives understanding of what I experienced. I only have the standard tests from my GP so I have to go on what I feel, but you and Dr. Boz have gotten me to a point where my diet and metabolism is pretty well sorted. I am no more interested in sugar than I am in cocaine. .

Great information! One difference, for me, is that I've cycled in and out of ketosis several times now, and I have learned how to avoid most of the "keto flu" symptoms whenever I go back into ketosis. I make sure I eat plenty of salt and keep my fat intake really high- higher than I use long-term when I'm eating keto-style. I also have an occasional avocado for the potassium. I just transitioned back into ketosis this past week, and my symptoms during the metabolic switch were very mild; just a slight sag in my energy level. This only took two days, and then I felt great.

So this is what I'm experiencing!! Explains so much...I achieved fat adapted state and felt incredible, stayed there for a couple of weeks and decided to cycle in carbs. The after effects were not great, definitely got that keto flu, not too bad but considering the state I was previously in I felt lousy. Thanks for the tips, I'll try adding in more salt. Any other suggestions to make the transition back to ketosis?

Thank you. This really makes sense. I've had 3 blood tests done since going low carb 1 year ago; 3, 6 and 12 months. Each cholesterol blood test result has shown more improvement in my cholesterol numbers BUT this last test my LDL has sky rocketed! My HDL Triglycerides ratio is the best it has been, my HbA1c is 5.2 (was 7.0), my ALT liver function pre low carb was 45 it is now 19. And of course the first thing the GP doctor said was statin and I immediately said NO! I've just had a calcium score/CT angiogram done but I don't have the results yet. My cardiologist was talking statin BEFORE the most recent blood test. I'm expecting that even if my CAC comes back okay he will pushing for me to take a statin as a preventative measure. I'm 65. My answer will still be a definitive NO! I saw this comment on a website: I know a professor of pharmacology who says to "NEVER LET ANYONE TINKER WITH YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS." Why? The benefits are MARGINAL while the risks are unknown.

I REALLY appreciate your explanation on this subject. I’ve spent so much $ working with doctors who didn’t understand metabolic syndrome. One forced me to eat more raw veggies, the other wanted me to eat more often and use his “metabolic drops”. My weight just stalled and bloodwork never improved to the point of relief. I’m convinced this way of eating is a LIFESTYLE for me.

I initially tried VLCD with meal replacement shakes/soups/bars but had already nearly eliminated sugar. Never experienced 'keto flu'. My theory is that keto flu is not just to do with carbohydrate but SUGAR withdrawal

That's correct! Ketosis is always useful - it gets you through carbohydrate withdrawal to begin with. Then you are keto adapted - but I prefer to call that "keto activated". When athletes talk about being "fat adapted" (which is NOT a medical term) they are referring to metabolising fat in their mitochondria - not ketones! That is opposed to being dependent on most of their basic speed from glucose. They are not necessarily ketogenic and are still getting a reasonable proportion of their energy from glucose and pyruvate and they are not able to function fully on ketones (muscles). Ketones are not "fats" as stated in the video - they are mainly sugars and solvents. Fructose is a ketone.

I bet you started watching more tv, drinking, smoking - I dunno... but when you are doing high dopamine activities, expect that you'll lose motivation to do low-dopamine activities, such as fasting. You need to look inwards to find what high-dopamine activity is killing your motivation to do fasting and other low-dopamine activities that are beneficial to you.

You can fast with just adding fats when hunger strikes( 0 protein , protein raise your insulin alot more then fat + it make you hungry alot faster again) Try fast with just adding electrolytes and good fats and you should get adapted faster.

I am thankful for this message. I have been intermittent fasting and cutting out my carbs. I have added Physical therapy twice a week to learn how to build muscle. I have not lost weight in my 3 months of effort. I feel thinner but no weight loss. I feel better knowing that it may take 3-6 months to become fat adapted. 25 years of diabetes is too long. I hope it's not too late for me.

If you feel thinner, you may have lost some fat while gaining muscle. Apparently muscle weighs more than fat, but the more muscle you have the better your ability to burn fat. I don't think it's too late for anyone to make the change. Have you tried water only for 24-36 hours, or longer? That is sometimes a kick-start into ketosis or fat burning when intermittent fasting doesn't quite get you there.

We lose the"internal" fat first. My stomach went way down before anything else. That's why you feel thinner. I can tell when I get up in the mornings, and I "feel " thinner, I've usually had a significant loss in lbs.

Age 70, Male, historically good physical shape, Never Sick, No Vaxx, physically active, 4 weeks into Carnivore. Had a few hits and misses with "Keto Snacks" and "Fat Bomb snacks, which threw me off. I seemed very low on energy for the first couple weeks as my body adjusted and diets solidified. Settling on 3 eggs + 4 strips bacon for breakfast and Mission Barbecue (No Sides) for dinner. I can keep this diet going. No cheap, but works. I had a heart attack 3 years ago.. did the statin ++ BS for a year and a half.. I could always feel my stent.. sometimes it was obvious. After going carnivore, I notice I can no longer feel my stent (at all!). My neck arthritus pain Nearly gone with Carnivore.. another few weeks and should be gone. Other things I've noticed w/Carnivore: 1, Mosquito bites seem much less than before? 2. Could my Hair be getting thicker? skin is less itchy as well. 3. My Teeth/Gums are MUCH better.. Gum pain is Gone.. could my gums be healing? Using Chlorine Dioxide Swish every morning as well.. (WOW!) major improvements!! No more Listerine Crap.. the teeth destroyer. Carnivore diet for me.

I"ve heard other medical professionals describe the keto flu as not caused by ketones but caused by the body going through withdrawl of its carb addiction. I don't know if I have ever been in actual ketosis but I have been on a predominantly high fight diet for the past 2 years and generally feel better. I eat plenty of vegetables but very few grains and zero seed oils.

I was already eating a partial Keto diet, I cannot eat grains, when I investigated Keto. Then Covid came along. I studied the foods and supplements needed to fight the illness and consumed them to the letter. Covid ran through the family a number of times and I never contracted it. I am a registered nurse and worked in our COVID unit and am maybe 1 of 3 people at our facility that employs 90-100 employees depending on people leaving and being hired. In fact my wife had COVID and we did not isolate from each other and I DID NOT get COVID. I know this to be true because we had to test for COVID at work 2 days a week for approx 2.5 years. I was taking my supplements which I know played a factor butULTIMATELY being keto played the biggest part👍

A M You actually need to love yourself & stop sabotaging yourself on purpose. Stop all sugar cold turkey including replacements (thats a crutch & a bad one for someone using sugar-a highly addictive DRUG. You will never lose your taste thus desire for sugar until you haven’t had any or substitutes for at least 14-21 days) Up your healthy fats for satiety so you can cut meals down to 2 (fasting 16 hours including sleep & eating 2x only in those 8 hours.) No snacking you should be very full of healthy complex veggies & moderate healthy proteins plus healthy fats-avocado, olive oil, (grass fed butter only) which make you feel full. Only you can recognize you’re deserving of a better life free of the addiction. You have one body/one life-treat your body like a temple & invest in your health as you would in maintaining the investment of your home. Buy the best quality food organic, grass fed meats if at all possible. Best to you💗

Thank you so much Dr. Cywes for clarifying this. Tracking ketones maybe useful for those who are doing it for therapeutic reasons. For example, when using it as an adjunct intervention for the treatment of cancer, for the treatment of epilepsy, or to ameliorate the cognitive impairment resulting from Alzheimer's disease, monitoring ketone levels has its utility. Yet, for the vast majority of people who are using low carb diets to lose weight and reverse metabolic syndrome, being overly fixated on ketone levels is absolutely useless. This all consuming obsession with tracking ketone levels has led to some bizarre behavior, like drinking straight oil or wasting a lot of money on exogenous ketones, all in the effort to elevate ketone levels in the blood. You can have high ketone levels and not lose weight if you over consume foods and snack too much. You can have high ketone levels by consuming ketone esters, and still have metabolic syndrome if your diet is not properly dialed in. Ketones should be seen as a marker and not as a goal

3:20 I had been overweight for most of my life. I did Keto a couple years ago for my first time and felt no ill effects. And I've always been a go hard or go home type guy, so I was full blown Keto eating less than 5g carbs per day, usually closer to 2 or 3 per day though. Everything I read online said I'd be tired or have the keto flu, but I never experienced anything negative. I only felt good positive effects such as being more energized and overall happier. Not sure if maybe some people are just genetically optimized for this type of diet but it was the easiest way I found to lose weight consistently. I ended up dropping 80 pounds overall. Over time I regained half of that back and I've now started my very first water fast, and again everyone said it would so difficult to do, but I again feel no ill effects. I'm almost 4 days in and 10 pounds down, again in full blown ketosis, with minimal hunger pains and a minimal amount of fatigue, but I still function just as I always have while raising a hyper child even. I dont know why I've had no trouble doing these weight cuts, but I do find them to be more effective, faster, and easier than trying to just reduce calories. Am I just genetically optimized for this, or why do I find it so easy?

It takes me a couple of months at least to actually get my body so that it is a happy camper with no to little carbs. I have been eating very low carb and high fiber for years. I always end up at a party or eating out and I either have a carby drink or a bread stick feast. I then run amuck. Next thing I am doing is defrosted my sourdough starter, baking cookies and eating uncontrollably. I become a slave to my appetite. It can take up to a year to get me back on track. I love the way my body feels when I eat properly. I listened to this cast and I realize that I have no personal science and that it may be imperative that I have some. I am in my 70's and am looking at the future in a home for the aged. When I am admitted they will ask about 'dietary needs' and I do not believe that you can put Keto in that space unless I have something substantial to back up the rationale behind why I eat the way I do and the deleterious effect of carbs on my well being. Carbs, for me, are not something I can turn on and off. It takes a long time to recover from a slip. Thank you Dr Cywes for all of the assistance and I appreciate a better understanding of what is going on inside of my body.

Oh so true. I went AWOL for a whole year, after 3 or 4 years of low carb and 2,5 on keto. I gained 8 kg in that year, because, try as I might, I was not able to control how much I would eat, or even just stay away from sweets. Carbs are a drug to me, I have no control over myself, when I eat them. But getting back on keto is way harder now, than it was, coming from a low carb diet. I felt completely lethargic for a whole month, didn't feel like exercising for at least 2 and still have 'off' days, where I'm unreasonably hungry and sometimes end up, binge eating on cheese or stand in front of the fridge, in the middle of the night, scooping up butter with almonds. I have not actually cheated with carbs though, so there's that. And I'm sorry to hear about your worries, regarding staying in control of your diet with changes in your living situation. That sucks. Maybe assisted living is an option? I believe, people can make that work for quite a while, if they're reasonably healthy. Wishing you the best, in any case!

Great advice! I've been trying to do keto for a couple of years, but my success has been sporadic. Through watching your videos, I came to realize that I was actually sabotaging myself with all the keto 'lookalike' desserts and treats I was making, and the 'keto' bars I was consuming. I have now started a more or less carnivore diet - I have gotten rid of all carbs except the occasional serving of brussels sprouts or spinach. My gnawing hunger is gone. I don't need to constantly snack. I actually feel full after eating. What an amazing difference after hearing the nature of my carb addiction explained, and the reality of fat adaptation. So glad I found your videos!

@@thesullivans217 I've begun short fasts about 2-3 days per week, where I don't eat anything before noon. I haven't tried anything longer yet, but this puts me at about 16-18 hours of fasting. It's surprising how little I miss breakfast some days, but other days I just seem to wake up hungry!

What I don't get is why you people are not after having both adaptations - to fats, and glucose? It's like losing a part of you for no reason. I believe you can be adapted to both fat and glucose, and I'm a prime example. Though I'm not at 12-9% body fat percentage, I'm still pretty lean while eating all 3 macronutrients, and I think in a year's time I'll get to my destination. I do however practice fasting, that's what I substitute for keto diet. Basically, I wanna achieve both glucose and fat efficient oxidation in my body. Not only fat adaptation.

Great video.😊 For me you explained this in a way for me to understand so I can pass it on to my cardiologist in three weeks. Since being on keto, my triglycerides are low, HDL is higher than it has ever has been. He was concerned about my total lipid at 218. Out came the Staten drugs which I told him I wasn’t taking. Thanks again Doc.👍

I feel like you literally read my latest profile from my last office visit. The numbers were almost the exact same as I have. And, yes, my doctor wanted to put me on a statin. I wish I could find a doctor in my area that knows something about keto. Sighs!

Just refuse the statins. Smile n be polite and be firm. U don’t have to explain urself either. Let them tell u all whatever they need to to be able to note they “educated” u n then say no with a smile again. U did not consent and they can note that now.

Can you do a video on fat adaptation for people who can't properly digest fats? Gall bladder and liver issues, bile not flowing, etc. I have severe pain when I eat fats 😢what can we do to turn things around so we can then shift to high fat diet? Thank you so much for your vids! 😊

Thanks for this video, doctor!🙌 I have a question: What happens if you are fat adapted after 3/6 months of not eating carbs, and then you start having a cheat day once a week. Do you lose the condition of being fat adapted? or it doesn't affect as long as you keep eating well the rest of the time? I mean, is it possible to have a 6-1 days long term without affecting our metabolism? (I mean, 6 days eating real food and 1 day having some treats, or just relaxing a bit and eating real food but high GI carbs like rice, potatos). Thanks in advance 🙏

@@atEase1775 I am sure it cannot hurt. I stated keto with an 18/6 IF plan 17 days ago plus working out. I am down 17 pounds so far, but I know this was mostly water and I am in for a long haul, at least 6 months to get back to a normal weight. I am a carb addict and it certainly is like a drug to me.

You explain this in a way I've never considered before. So, you said the cells quit actively trying to protect the cells against an influx of sugar. Would that explain why I feel jittery and almost sick whenever I relapse and eat something sugary or carb heavy? Pasta definitely does it to me but not so much bread for some reason. My body just straight up does not like pasta anymore even when I crave it emotionally.

When you O.D. on carbs after being in ketosis, you will get this feeling. It is just too much energy in your bloodstream, and you are basically responding like a toddler on a sugar high. Being fat-adapted means that your body (and especially your brain) prefers fat/ketones as its energy source. Fat and ketones are the diesel fuel and you power through the day like a diesel truck. Sugar is like gasoline, and you rev your engine like a sports car, zipping about. As mentioned, it takes time for your body (mitochondria) to build up the metabolic machinery to burn fat and act like a diesel truck. Likewise, if/when you choose to move back to carbohydrate burning mode, it takes a bit of time to readjust. Keto is a lifestyle. When you put gasoline in the tank of your diesel truck, that is a problem.

This frustrates the heck outta me! How am I, a non medical professional, supposed to know what tests to have done let alone how to correctly interpret them on this new woe? If doctors can't interpret these tests correctly, I feel like a sitting duck! So confusing!

Dr. Ken D. Berry ("KenDBerryMD" here on youtube) has written a book all about what lab tests should be checked and how to interpret their results. I have not read it yet but I plan to soon. You might be interested in it too. He also has a few videos on his YT channel where he discusses this.

A lot of this depends on your starting condition. One of the best tests of being fat adapted is the ability to fast. I was on keto for years and still could not do a 24 hour fast. Being fat adapted has nothing to do with weight or weight loss. Calories still matter, and if you are overeating on a carnivore diet, you most certainly can gain fat. However, it is also common for people to gain lean body mass and muscle on a higher protein carnivore diet, so you can't just go by "weight."

Great video that makes the common sense point that after becoming fat adapted you don’t have to consume high amounts of fat while your body is consuming its excess fat on board to lose weight and more importantly get rid of visceral organ fat that caused the metabolic dysfunction in the first place. Once optimal weight is achieved, fat can then be consumed for fuel and moderate protein to maintain muscle mass. Another issue that requires verification is that once fully Fat Adapted over a year or two, blood ketones are not elevated and remain in the “normal” range which may disappoint many. This can be compared to Blood Glucose being in homeostasis, so likewise Ketones.

I had keto rash every time I tried keto and gave up because it was to extreme and itchy. However, I went carnivore from a carb diet and never got the rash. I have no idea why but it just didn't happen.

You need to go on a strict carnivore (Beef and Water) and than add types of food BACK to your diet until you get the rash. Than and only then will you know which foods you need to cut out. I guessing this will be a life changing experience once you eliminate the food that causing your inflammation.
