Welcome to the Dreamworld! That was a great first deep dive, really entertaining to see both your points of view and I'm glad you're enjoying their music. To me Dreamcatcher is a breath of fresh air after being a rock fan for quite a few years now, I love the way they blend different genres and the flavour their different voices add to their sound. Couple that with cool choreographies, great messages behind their lyrics and the fact that they're all humble and adorable crackheads and that's why they've easily become one of my favourite groups/bands/artists ever. Thanks for checking them out, looking forward to part two! Recommendations? There are so many great b-sides, these are just a few I'd recommend: - Reason (MV) - Black Or White (Dingo Music Performance Video) - Red Sun (Special Clip) - Sahara (Self-made MV) - Break The Wall (Self-made MV) - Propose (Dream Concert Japan or Showcase Ver.) - Demian - Wind Blows (Live Band Ver.) - Locked Inside a Door - Starlight - Fairytale (Special Clip) - In The Frozen - Silent Night - And There Was No One Left (Special Clip) - Eclipse (MV) - Don't Light My Fire (metalheads should definitely check this one and 'No More') - No More (MV)

Even though I don't listen to other kpop groups, Dreamcatcher became of one my favorite groups overall. The variety and quality of music they put out are big enough reasons to check them out. Also I think I've overheard that someone likes chaotic music, if that's the case maybe you'd like jrock band Gacharic Spin. Similar to Dreamcatcher they're really big on genre fusion, with their own twist.

I rarely post a long comment but since this is a Deep Dive to a Dreamcatcher, I, as an InSomnia just cannot to stay still and not mentioned I'm about to share. Prolly the awesome info I can tell you is the Trilogy that each MV you saw, they had a big tree in Scream, Boca, and Odd Eye. That tree is the Tree of Language. This Trilogy interpreted this harsh reality. Scream reflects the painful, difficult reality we live in. Boca (for Mouth in Spanish) is a song to shut people's mouth, it's about cyber bullying where people say everything they want, "All targets are directed at you. Injury without a blade". and Odd Eye expresses the process of being lured into idealism, catching yourself before it is too late and coming to terms with the inevitable. A message of hope for people to find their Utopia within their hearts. One of the many reasons for us, InSomnia, to love them more is that their lyrics has a deep meaning and not always about Love. And fun fact for ya that their discographies are 100% gender neutral. When they do covers, they didn't change pronouns about a female lover. * I want to talk about the Nightmare series but it's too long for you and you might not interested since i see you didn't pay attention to they story telling of their MVs lol. If Interested just google, Us InSomnia loves writing novels especially for DC Nightmare series lol And 1 more, they might debuted on 2017 (which actually Sunbaenim or veteran enough to called one) but 5 of em actually debuted first back then on 2014 as MINX and then changed concept, adding 2 member, and boom~ 7 members sisters like, talented beautiful ladies. Among the members and the whole company is just like family. I love them all. Thanks for give recognize to our girls!
@JGM0JGM Жыл бұрын
So glad you gave a great analysis of the _Tree of Language_ trilogy I can't stand the facile way some people just mention "Speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil". In my opinion that analysis is so wrong... Just to add a little layer to your explanation... There is also an element of time progression. *Scream* is more pre-internet, even Dark Ages (the sword, witches, magic spells, etc.), when people were more careful about what they were saying but could still hurt with their words. *Boca* is more about the present, when social media has become a harsh reality and an easy place to hide if you want to hurt people with your words. *Odd Eye* is about the future (the Tree is connected directly to some sort of light wires...). Will we ever ever get out of this? We might if we fight the illusion and all that you mentioned... but there is no utopia, reality is what it is, but we have to see it correctly first in order to fight back.

Great video, guys! I really liked the mindful discussion of DC music and I liked how you organized the playlist so far. As for the suggestions, you talked about EDM in Dreamcatcher music, so I would suggest to include the holy trinity of Sleepwalking/Silent Night/In the Frozen just to introduce this side of their sound. I also would like you to include Don't Light My Fire, because while it is on the rocky side of their music, it is very different to everything they've done. Once again, thanks for the video!

Welcome to the Dreamworld! Dreamcatcher are very unique. They are the dark angels of Kpop and the only girl group who consistently incorporate Rock and Metal in their title tracks, fusing that with Kpop into something that basically is a new genre. They also are drenched in horror and social criticism, which again is special. Plus, they are massively talented, all of them. And while the girls look like they could rip out your spine when they are on stage, off stage they are adorable crackheads. 😉 "Chase me" was their debut, released on January 13th (a Friday), 2017. It must have been nerve-wrecking for the members, re-debuting with a genre that is not popular in Korea after Minx failed. (5 of them were Minx before.) But they already doubled their sales with this. And they stuck with the Rock/Metal vibe until today, now selling 50 times the albums than Minx did. This is the start of the Nightmare arc, which spans 6 MVs and 1 Japanese release. They are Nightmares here, and the Nightmare hunter is trying to dispel them - how that turns out is shown in the next one, Good Night. Good Night is one of their heavier releases, and I love it. The K-Rock girl group Rolling Quartz also did an excellent cover of it. The Nightmare hunter casts spells to trap the members, but they get the book from him and turn it against him, trapping him behind the mirror. "Fly High" is probably the poppiest of the Nightmare arc. It was not done by their usual production team as well. But it makes sense, since this is a prequel, so bringing in a bit of the Minx sound makes sense to me. There are really heavy parts in it as well, which clearly state that they are not Minx anymore. And I love the dark parts thrown in, they really make the song special. The light part sung by SuA after the metal break is in major, while the rest of the song is in minor. That is why it stands out so much. They did the same in Good Night, but a lot shorter. About the MV: You can see Yoohyeon burning the spider, which brought the curse of the spider queen down on the members. You will see the spider queen again in You and I. In Native American mythology, spiders are considered protectors, that is why a Dreamcatcher resembles a spider's net. That is a brilliant connection to their name! 😊 Full Moon was their fan song for their first anniversary. It basically is about their love for their fans (InSomnia). In "You and I" you can see the spider queen coming for Yoohyeon. She is the old woman that is being photographed - only to rob Yoohyeon's spirit. Also, earlier we see Dongie being pinned to the wall by needles, what is usually done to insects. For me, Yoohyeon's spirit is being pulled out here and thrown into the white dimension, which we will see again in Piri. The spider queen takes over her body, which is why we see JiU grab her neck in the end. If you ask me, I believe "You and I" is a direct follow-up to "Fly High". For me, the story continues here through to Piri, and Chase me would then follow Piri chronologically. "What" is still in my top 3 favorite title tracks. It's heavy for a Korean release and I love the syncopation in the second half of the chorus. Story-wise this is the first time they wear non-uniform outfits, which I believe is because they lost Yoohyeon (or at least her spirit) and are kind of broken. You can also see them search for her alone, not as a group. For me this is a song about the loss of a loved one and what that does to a group or family. I might be reaching, but this is the meaning for me. "Piri" is the last part of the Nightmare Arc (their Japanese release "Breaking out" can be seen as an alternative ending). In "What", the girls have been searching for Yoohyeon, and here they find each other again, but in the end they are all stuck in the white dimension. A Piri is a Korean flute that was used historically to signal danger, and that is what Yoohyeon does here when the members arrive. She is the one capturing them one by one, to rescue them and bring them to safety. They are together in the end, but still stuck. Dreamcatcher don't do happy endings. 😉 Deja Vu is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is a beautiful, fragile ballad that kicks your teeth down your throat in the chorus. It is extra difficult to sort out, because it tells the story from two perspectives. You know how even evil people think they are the good guys? This is reflected here. One perspective is Yoohyeon's, who gets corrupted right in the beginning. She thinks JiU is bad (does not want to share power) and backstabs her and kills, imprisons or banishes the other members so that she can rule alone. The other perspective is reality, where we can see JiU be kind to Yoohyeon, but she gets killed for it. I believe this is a commentary on the different perspectives people can have about the same event. The lyrics seem to hint at an abusive relationship, where there are usually two perspectives as well, and the abuser finds excuses to justify their actions, while the abused find themselves in an endless Deja Vu. With Endless Night, one of their Japanese releases, they enter Babymetal territory. It is about their struggles before they became Dreamcatcher and how happy they are now. It is not their heaviest release to date, that would be "No More". Scream is part 1 of the Dystopia trilogy, which is about cyber-bullying, hateful comments and people losing themselves in the (fake) online world. It is mostly showing the victim's perspective of (cyber)bullying, comparing it to a medieval witch hunt and a burning at the stake. The tree is the tree of language, and it grows black fruit for every hurtful thing people say. Note also the hand gesture, it is the devil's horns introduced by Ronnie James Dio as a symbol for metal, but it originally was a gesture in the middle ages to ward off the evil eye, tying into the witch hunt theme. I really enjoy the music, it's rock mixed with EDM. Dreamcatcher are always very creative, and they are in their own genre by this point. Boca means "mouth" in Spanish and Portuguese and is part 2 of the Dystopia trilogy. Boca has the lines "Why do you fill your precious time with hate" and "Too many angels dying now", which points to the effects those comments can have. Several Kpop idols have committed suicide in recent years, most likely because of cyber-bullying, but this is also about all the unnamed people who suffer from online bullies. A girlgroup tackling such a subject impresses the hell out of me. They literally go to war in this video and tell haters to go and shut their "Boca" in the lyrics. And the song is absolutely awesome! Who said you can't have three different musical genres in one song? Odd Eye is part 3 of the Dystopia trilogy. People can get lost in the world of the Internet and social media and their online personas can take over their life. Dreamcatcher want us to use our odd eye to see through the lies (on Facebook and others) and don't be fooled by the "lies masked in sweetness". I can only recommend to keep reacting to them, they are always interesting and entertaining! And the song is a banger!

dreamcatcher \:D/ just a few notes... first on their sound. their title tracks for the most part are part of trilogies/series so the songs within those will follow a similar theme. for example the dystopia trilogy has an 'internet' theme/message thus a lot of electronic/edm is incorporated in those songs. the recent apocalypse trilogy is also very different. most casual fans will think their sound is 'evolving' but in reality dreamcatcher really has no fixed sound other than genre mashing. most of their songs are actually non-rock and because they always find different ways of mixing sounds/genres, almost none of their songs sound familiar. what songs you like will depend on your musical preference. 'kpop' fans may say the dystopia trilogy is an improved evolution from the nightmare series(started with chase me), but in my opinion the dystopia trilogy is my least favorite of their title tracks so in that regard it's regressed musically. of course I'm probably the most anti-kpop of fans and dreamcatcher is pretty much the only 'kpop' I playlist. second which is a continuation of the first. you noticed the drums sounded off vs the real guitars but that's intentional because that is their style. they will mix synth with live instruments as you probably have picked up on by now. purist rock/metalheads will think it's jarring to have guitars with 808s and they even mix real drums with 808s in the same section of songs. you just have to get use to it but once you do it makes their songs sound more dynamic imo just like how many sections of their songs are completely different genres. lastly as a note on the progression of their music videos. you have to understand before they were dreamcatcher, 5 of the members were part of another group called minx who did stereotypical kpop sounds. being from a small company with limited resources to promote, they failed. in any other case in the kpop industry, that would have been the end of them but the ceo of their company saw they could pull off any genre so rolled the dice and gave them another chance. instead of doing what everyone was doing, they would go their own way musically and part of this was using rock/metal influence in their title tracks. so they started off with nothing and did sounds there were not popular in the kpop industry but this is actually a recurring message in many of their songs - to be yourself and to never give up on your dreams; for example watch endless night again with captions on. dreamcatcher was their second chance to 'catch' their dreams as singers. other groups most people know about like blackpink or even newjeans, those were born successful through heavy promotion by their big labels. blackpink for example had million of followers even before they released a single song. so when you look at how cheesy the chase me debut video is, and it was, that was literally their company betting the farm on their re-debut. instead of millions of followers even before a debut, dreamcatcher had 3-4 dozen people show up at a fan meeting after their first ep. their earned fans one song at a time and when you listen to their discography you will understand why. some of their best songs are actually non-rock b-sides and you will have their metalhead fans saying this.

Dance Practices? ALL of them. The girls hated the choreo for 'Chase Me'; it was difficult for them because they had no break in the song, no time to breathe, constantly in motion for three minutes straight. But the first thirty seconds of 'Good Night' is likely their most technically difficult choreo (or back then it would have been for them), it was so precise and specific... There are also Relay Dances but those are found on the channel M2, which is MNET's property, so you may not be able to react to those. Even if you can't get a reaction video up for any of them, I still advise watching them on your own, totally worth the time and entertainment. The Relay Dances are KILLERS! The group also does covers, one of which is a Relay Dance in the 'Boca' era, a cover of 'Abracadabra' by Brown Eyed Girls. That song alone is LETHAL, AND THEN, DreamCatcher covered it... Bring some water, buckle in and Hohold on to your hat...

@AudioAddictionmedia Жыл бұрын
That's fair I do think I'll have to give it more listens!

@@AudioAddictionmedia Full honesty, Dreamcatcher does pioneer with sound and they deliberately mix in weird elements such as electronic base with acoustic guitar, use of eastern or chromatic scale, skipping beats, mixing crazy amounts of weird genres like moombahton with rock and hip hop (Boca). They even have a song where the BPM goes up by 60 by the end of it.. All their songs have really high production value and they use many layers and switches with 7 vocalists that none of them are easy to process at first. But tracks like Piri and Boca are exceptionally unorthodox. Our brain needs connections, this is why we use these kinds of boxes that "this sounds like that". We learn and process new stuff by mapping it to our existing knowledge. Many times when I hear "sounds like anime opening" I feel it means that the listener is really early at comprehending Dreamcatcher soundscape just this was the low hanging fruit to at least map it to something. And when they do not find proper mapping they get confused at first and even if they like many many segments of a song, the song as a whole is still weird as it is nothing they have experienced before. Anyway my point is that IMHO out of EVERY K-Pop group Dreamcatcher songs are the one that need most listens so that they make sense and even so they can still remain too complex and as a result not enjoyable to everyone. But for me this is what makes them so special as they do not want to appeal the masses but they do whatever they want to do. And the reason they CAN do this is because they are not part of a big company that mass manufactures popular K-Pop songs for the masses, but they are under their very own small company that although has limited budget but still gives them creative freedom. All Dreamcatcher members have solo songs, almost all of them participated in music creation (lyrics, composing or even production level) and they have a solid stable production team. Ollunder is still with them after 7 years and Leez was there for all but the last EP. And this is why you see the improvement on M/Vs as they had really limited budget during the early years, also they could not experiment that much there as they were just putting themselves together after a failed debut followed by a disband in a country that normally does not appreciate rock music....

i do love that they have added different elements into their music! I think why I make references of "this sounds like that" or this has "anime opening OST" is because that's my background knowledge of the sound while I'm sure there are better ways to explain that sound I don't think it's a terrible way of understanding it. I'm sure as I get more into Kpop/Dreamcatcher I'll be able to frame it in a different way then when I didn't know the band!

@@AudioAddictionmedia Do not take it in a bad way, everyone uses the anime opening analogy as they do sound like that in some parts of their title tracks as they take a lot of inspiration from J-rock. But in other parts... As a music producer put it into words, the genre of Dreamcatcher is K-Whatever_the_hell_we_want_to_do. They have pure J-Metal, EDM, Jazz, Reggie songs. Beside those genres they also mix in plenty of trap, dubstep elements among the rock and (K-)Pop parts. I was only using it as an example why our brain needs more listen of their music as it is so far off from what we got used to. And even after listening to more K-Pop their music is still weird sometimes :D

Haha I didn't take offense 😂 I just know I have to become more knowledgeable about it 😊

One way that I can best show the difference in the Vocal focus vs the Instrumental focus is to compare Good Night by Dreamcatcher, where the vocals are the focus as a KPop group, and Good Night by Rolling Quartz, where the Instrumentals are the focus as a KRock group. The song is the same, but the mixing and levels are different.

Ooooo that would be cool to compare!

(39:10) That question about whether there had been any member changes... One more thing needs to be said here, simply because it is very unusual in the Kpop world. I think you've heard about of the 7-year curse, that time when the original contract ends, which usually signals either the disbandment or a deep restructuring with some members leaving... Usually the former is way more usual. Our girls, at the beginning of this year, all enthusiastically resigned a new contract even before the end of the 7 years (which is coming this January). They were all happy about it and they all said basically the same thing... they want to continue for as long possible... (Also, about this topic, there is a video of them taking part in some Web Program... at one point they had to individually face teh camera and talk about their worries or fears... GaHyeon, the Maknae, couldn't stop crying because she was talking about her fear that either we, Insomnia, abandon them, or that the other members would each go their own way and all forget about each other.. It was so touching and it really showed the deep level of care and love these girls share because it was a feeling they all had and with which they could really relate. I'm getting teary-eyed just remembering about this... lol)

I know i am too late to give any critics... But I just can't help it! It's more for Alex... I understand that you might be a Siyeon's bias, but still, Dreamcatcher is not just Siyeon and Dami! I love Siyeon too, but hey, she is the main vocal, so yes, it would be a lot of responsibility for her to flex her ability here and there... I understand that... But when you chose to compliment her visual in odd eye, I just can't help it! From chase me up to odd eye, you just mention Siyeon for visual?! - JiU obviously is the visual goddess, her soft tone is so unique in the rock genre, she is one of the center figure in the story of the MVs, but you ignored this; - SuA is the dance monster, she is a choreographer too, she is one of the chosen one for a belting verse, she rap too, but you chose to ignore; - Handong is also a visual goddess, she has a very unique tone, and she is the main chosen one for an iconic line in every songs, and again you ignore this; - Yoohyeon is a lead vocal, but actually she is the second main vocal, while Siyeon obviously give a belting adlibs, Yoohyeon's adlibs are more controlled and full of technicality, she is also a beauty goddes and one of the main center figure in the most MVs, and well, you ignore this; - Gahyeon is the master of facial expressions, she can sing, she can rap, she can dance, and she is the youngest, thus the cutest member too, obviously you ignore her too... I do understand that everyone have the right to give the preferable member the spotlight, but what you did in this video is too much, and feels like you abandoned the other members contributions to the groups Well, I do have to make an apologetic line if my comments are giving an uncomfortably conditions whether for Alex or anyone who read and might get offended... I really sorry for that... Please understand that I do it for the sake of our Ladies... They all are working so hard to be in the position now... They all are fulfilling their job descriptions in the most satisfying as it could be... So yeah, I feel moved to make this comments, and once more, please forgive my rudeness... Stay safe, keep healthy, and have great days

Hi ignoring the other girls was not my intention at all! I appreciate them all individually (have always been Jiu biased visually) so I’m sorry if it appeared that I wasn’t giving equal attention!
@wuriyantowidodo956 Жыл бұрын
@@ervtron no worries mate, I am sorry if I was too rude... I understand that you might want to not giving much Infos before any songs played to make the real first tiime watching experiences feel more genuine... But unfortunately, it appears that all infos that had been leaked from you were all about Siyeon and Dami... It might be coincidence and not in your attention at all... But, remember that the audiences are very random, and they might have their own preferable figures... When they felt that their bias was not taking care equally, the worst thing that might happen is they begin to hate the one that always been mentions... So please be more carefull in the future, cause whether you want it or not, the channel has been one of the influencer among the audiences... Again, forgive my rant and attitude, but as I did this long comments, means that I do care for you and this channel... Stay safe, keep healthy, and have great days
