I'm so glad I decided to randomly buy the Octavarium album back in 2005 when I was working at Circuit City. I had no idea what the band sounded like. All I knew, being a guitar player, was that John Petrucci was in the band so it had to be good. The day I bought that album was the day my musical life changed forever. Dream Theater has been such a huge part of my life since then and they have actually helped me get through some very hard times. First time the mixing/production doesn't bother me while listening to a DT song since ADToE. They seem to finally get it right: Myung is audible, Mangini's snare doesn't sound like an 80's one, Labrie have less chorus/flanger effects and everything sounds well-balanced. I love that LaBrie is staying within his current vocal range instead of trying to live up to the highs of his early career. I remember a story about how Ian Gillan started losing his range but kept trying to hit those high notes. Similar to an degree with Geoff Tate. The irony being that if they just shifted everything to a lower pitch and put in a good performance, it would be less noticeable than straining their cords around notes that they can't reliably reach anymore.

James is sounding great. I'm loving the attention to the lower, more melody-driven register they chose for the vocal approach. I also feel like the production on this is the best sounding of the Mangini era so far. Really loving this tune the further down the track I get!
@pedrosilvaproductions3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, and thats just my opinion, his voice is getting weaker timbre wise. When he goes to his higher register is sounding less and less crisp and Bright, and starting sound more tinier and it sort of hurts. It feels forced. I really prefer his lower range nowadays. Having in mind the James' issue with his higher notes, it is a wise decision for him to sing in his lower register. Besides doing it so well, melodies are better heard. It was heartbreaking to see MP left 14 years ago and I thought I’ll never recover. MM WAS the “meh” factor in the band for me to be honest, especially during the self-titled and Astonishing era. But with him I feel like the band kinda progressed musically (no pun) and each new album was a surprise. And of course sometimes it worked and the other day it wasn’t, but that’s the beauty of it: they’re experimenting. Now I’ve got a night terror (pun intended) hearing MP playing the very same pattern he used to play from 20 somewhat years ago. I mean the man doesn’t even bring something new to the band rather than nostalgia. The new single is nowhere near the musicality of this song, or any song from a view from the top of the world. I have to admit there was a time when I really wanted MP to make a comeback with DT just like most of the fans, but now I realize the best thing to do is move on and never go back to your past, like literally. I guess we only appreciate what we have once we lost it. Sehat selalu mas Bram, wkwk😂

@@somethingofascientistmyself Halo mas!! Yea true. It’s not that i don’t like the new “night terror”, it’s just.. boring. You know what i mean. We knew Jordan, 2 John’s, and James could do something more with MM although they might not be able to keep up with MM toughness. I watched DT played Alien in Tokyo in 2022, and what I saw was, James and John couldn’t even keep up with MM playing pattern. I realized there’s a reason why MM was mentioned as the first writer of this Grammy winning song. What I am trying to say is, Mike Portnoy comeback might give a “safe feeling” to the other players, bcoz they already knew each other for so long. But at the same time DT is experiencing DEVOLUTION with the comeback of MP.

Those epic chord progressions were epic we are into them for 30 years, but since DoT and now it's very satisfying to hear mr. Petrucci and mr. LaBrie finding right notes. Uncontemptated notes over quite simple harmony - classical feeling.

As with many people here in the comments, I came back here to compare Night Terrors to The Alien. Mr. Mangini is absolutely killing it in this song. This song deserves the Grammy it won. The man is an exceptional drummer and he made exceptional music with Dream Theater for 10 years. I do not want to take anything away from Mr. Mangini at all. I'm excited to hear new music from him as well. That being said, Night Terrors sounds more like the Dream Theater I fell in love with in 1992 when I first heard Images and Words. Is Mike Portnoy as technically good as Mike Mangini? Probably not but Mike Portnoy is no slouch behind the kit either. To me, though, I enjoy Night Terrors more only because it is reminiscent of the Dream Theater I fell in love with 30 years ago. I've seen Dream Theater live more than 20 times throughout the last 30 years and I can't wait to see them again in March when they are in my neck of the woods. I'll probably take flack in the comments, but Dream Theater seems whole to me again. 😊

Dunno about the flack. It is ok to have an opinion, or rather personal preference :-) I actually do not care that much about who sits behind the kit. The more I listen the more it makes sense and the better it sounds! Recommend listening after Pale Blue Dot, as this one is about humanity expanding to other planets and being ”The Alien”.

Great how you can do that, even if the video is not online yet. Must be alien powers.

07:47 What an emotional ending! The lyrics are so meaningful. We have always thought that aliens are an intelligent race that visit Earth. But in the future, the human race will turn into an alien; those who will travel through the stars with the sole purpose of finding an ideal world for our species. That is why the cinematics at the end deal with the exploration of Mars; Curiosity, Opportunity rovers appear; because we already started space exploration to find a world to settle in. Incredible mix, masterpiece! Cannot wait till hear the full álbum!

Until we find an entire galactic community that we are late to join and discover there is a race of sentient machines that exterminates all intelligent organic life throughout the galaxy every 50,000 years, and you warn the galactic community of this threat but they don't believe you and don't prepare

@@shlomorothstein9691 Well, if we don't discover and join this galactic community, are we even advanced enough for the Reapers...I mean these "sentient machines" to even notice us?

Reminiscing and appreciating MM. Mixed feelings about his departure. The spirit carries on in DT with MP returning and hopefully that doesn't become a negative for all concerned. It would be perfect seeing the DT guys work with MM on side projects that would be different from, but like LTE, PSMS, etc. I hope future collaborations with MM would be welcomed right away and especially if negativity starts being generated because of the change. I wish the best for all involved and welcome MP back, though not as enthusiastically.
