My issue after 3-plus years of keto and 5-plus years (including keto) of very-low-carb, is that I seem to be perpetually in a high state of gluconeogenesis. I _have to_ eat nearly zero carb (I'm high protein, because I'm trying to preserve muscle mass at 60) to keep my blood sugar under 110 or 120, even moderately fasted. If I add even a small amount of "healthy carbs" I seem to fill up my glycogen reserves and run between 120 and 130 at odd times (several hours after eating.) I'm wondering if reading the Atkins book for clues on adding back healthy carbs will help. After Jason Fung actually endorsed it, I'm thinking about Lumen, but there are many detractors, and I don't particularly like being told what to eat spur of the moment. I've been trying to eat a lot of low-carb salads lately (with a generous wild salmon portion), and it's not working for me. I lost a lot of weight with -low carb- keto and fasting, but I think too much of it was muscle (possibly because I wasn't doing resistance training), which is why I went high-protein. I gained back about 20% of what I lost, much of it skeletal muscle, and I'm much healthier aside from blood sugar. I seem to be leaning out (and losing fat again, but mostly because I do whole-day and two- or three-day fasts most weekends.) I'm a bit baffled at this point.

Think of it like this. If we as humans were not designed to eat a variety of foods from different sources, then we wouldn't have a pancreas! The exocrine pancreas produces enzymes that help to digest food, particularly protein. The endocrine pancreas makes the hormone insulin, which helps to control blood sugar levels. That in of itself tells me that mother nature intended on us to eat and enjoy life! The problem is all our foods these days are processed and contain God knows what kind of harmful chemicals. Not only that, but we tend to overindulge on everything then sit around and watch TV or play on the computer! Great video!

I appreciate your understanding and explanation of blood sugars. I want to add something else. Over the past two years, I have experienced eight surgeries, and the foot is still not fixed. Originally I had two surgeries to correct the foot, but the wound became infected and the next five surgeries were used to try to arrest the infection. I experienced three stays in the hospital and an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. Finally, they removed all the hardware, because the infection had settled in the Teflon adhesions and anchors for the screws. I am still waiting for the next surgery, having been put in a cast to reduce the swelling in the joints. I say all of this to point out that any pain or wound in the body, causes stress, which raises blood sugar. I began the year going on a carnivore diet, no carbs .My most recent A1C was 5.6. My sugar still raises due to the pain I endure. It causes frustration, because if my sugar is high, the doctor won't operate. But in order to lower the sugar, I take oral medicine, which raises the insulin and causes weight gain. It's a vicious cycle, but I want others to know, it's not just what you eat, though that is a great part of it. There are other issues including illness, or an injury, or even some medications that can also raise your blood sugar.

Been following everything I've learned from Sten for more than a year now. 🎈 Not only have I lost 35 kg. I'm no longer diabetic type 2. Psoriasis has bettered. My bipolar diagnose doesn't feel as debilitating as before. Mood more stabilized. Circadian rhythm stabilized. My gratitude is hardly expressible in words. Thank you Dr. Sten Ekberg❣

I did get into high carb eating addiction a few times, and it is hard for me to then break out of it again. But i found out recently, that it might be also an coping mechanism for me for an anxiety disorder. But in then the bad foods makes the anxiety way worse which makes the craving for more bad foods way stronger, so it is easy to get trapped into that cycle. It also does not help it takes an while including strong withdrawal symptoms to break out again, and go back to healthy foods

Hello, Dr. Sten Ekberg. Just wanted to say, lover your videos. You’re extremely helpful and very educational. You have know idea how much you have helped me overcoming type 2 diabetes. I went from a fasting level of 14 mmol/L, that’s 12hr without eating, to a fasting level of 4.1 mmol/L . I went from 240lbs to 155lbs in less than 4 months. Sounds hard to believe but I guarantee you it’s very true. I even asked my doctor why I was losing the weight so fast, she gave no good answer, almost like she didn’t know or how to explain it. I also went from an A1C of 1O.0% to 6.5% to 5.4% in less than a year watching and learning from your videos. I also stopped taking Metformin without my Doctor knowing, and I tell you I was seeing better results after 3 weeks than I was in the 5 months I was taking it. I don’t know my insulin level, I don’t think my doctor suggested that or if they even do insulin levels (HOMA-IR test) I also don’t believe my doctor suggested a fatty liver test, all she said the first day I was told I have T2D was “You have diabetes, I’m sorry. “Then continued to say. “I’m going to prescribe you some medication and I feel you’re going to be on it for a very long time.” I believe after watching your videos and learning what you say about doctors, I can strongly agree that they don’t know anything about diabetes, or they just don’t care. They just wanna give your medications and your out the door. Everyone on KZbin says they have a diabetes management team, but here in Canada I feel that I had know one to help me, know one to guide me in the right direction, until I came across your channel. Everything just makes so much sense. Thank you so much for making content about T2D, like I said before you have know idea how much you have help me understand what needs to be done to master T2D. Thank you Dr. Ekberg. Michael.

For me, IMHO of course, this has got to be one of, if not the best video you've done. You wrap up all these complex subjects into a nice neat presentation I can take each portion of it and do a little deeper research into it without getting too far into the weeds. It's great how you present and give a little visual wrap up for everything. I haven't found anyone who has done this as well as you because you don't "assume" everyone who watches you has a biochemistry background. Very well done..... :)

You made me curious and I have checked my glucose level one hour after dinner: it's 91. I'm diabetic type 2, I'm on a real low carb diet, walk a lot and lift some weight three times a week, I'm controlling easily due to this combination. I thank you for the suggestions I've got from your videos.

I have some unknown congenital neuropathy, can do about 30-40 hours fasting before body goes weak, tremmors, nausea, dry heaves, vomittimg, fever, bad headaches, etc. So I stick to OMAD, and maybe every 2-4 weeks, try to push a bit longer, then eat extra if necessary. Most veggies aren't well tolerated. But I do ok with broccoli or lightly blanched or lightly steamed kale or spinach, rather than raw. I don't do well with too many hard nuts, they blowright through me. A modest amount of carbs via a bit of rice, pasta, or bread seems to make my body happy. ½-¾ cup of rice, 2-4 slices of bread, 6-8oz pasta. Mostly avoid sugary foods, fruits, veggies, but drink OJ one gallon jug a month or so as needed, especially if heavy sweatting leads to nausea, as electrolyres get restored. A banana now and then, 2-4 a month or less. Could use testing to see how bad things are. Not great but not horrible either. Fair bit of room for improvement. Could do with weight loss, gut health, inflammation, pain, and cognitive decline management, as well as do absolutely everything to protect my dwindling muscle and neuron health.

I don't remember the source, but I read somewhere that your blood sugar drops by ~20-30% if you do some light exercise right after a meal. I think they recommended a 10 minute walk around the neighbourhood.
