After following your advice for about 3.5 months (very low carbs, high protein, relatively high natural fats, intermittent fasting increasing to 15 hours per day), I've just received my HbA1c and Glucose results as follows: HbA1c (IFCC) 29 mmol/mol or INGSP of 4.8, let's say, in your speak, 86.5 mg/dl Glucose (Random) 4.9 mmol/L or, again, 88.2 mg/dl Early last year, I was diagnosed with my first attack of gout, and just about the most pain I'd ever want to experience in my life, after reaching high uric acid levels and more than enough evidence of increasing amounts of both subcutaneous and visceral fat. I think your followers will know what drives uric acid and adipose tissue deposits to those levels but, just to confirm, soft drinks sweetened with fructose and other sugary and starchy foods. Clearly, with the hindsight of the meaning of metabolic disease, these changes were the result of my poor diet and physiological stress while caring for an aged family member over a number of years. I had a BMI of 28.5, heading in the wrong direction. Today I weighed in at 85.5kg, almost 10kg less than 4 months ago, and my BMI is approaching 25 (top of the ideal range). The loss of just 2kg more will see me at my ideal weight. My lower abdomen has now taken on a much greater definition and I look pretty ok in the mirror at 73. You, and a couple of others like you, have my eternal gratitude for providing both the intellectual and practical means to reverse these conditions and allow ourselves to live more humanistic lives. Nothing could ever compensate you for your heroic generosity and kindness, let alone your invaluable knowledge and insights. Well done, Doc.

Diabetes is a condition where glucose metabolism is impaired; neither blood glucose nor a1c are good tests; the only test to show whether glucose metabolism works is a fasting followed by a post-prandial test. I cannot eat rice or any other starchy foods. I find it easier in terms of will power to just never eat the starch, rather than to eat just a little bit. Some people are able to control themselves as they permit themselves small amount of carbohydrates occasionally. I cannot endorse that choice, but I recognize some people are able to manage it. What I have heard from influencers such as Doctor Ken Berry, is that keto with some small occasional carbs does work and for most people is a more attainable pathway to good health. However, they also say that after one or two years, many people on ketogenic diet with some occasional carbohydrates, start to have problems maintaining their discipline. Maybe you will be ok, but if you find yourself slipping, you might at that stage reconsider whether you can continue to eat rice. I wish you good health and the best of success.

What a shame this knowledge was unknown until recent years. As a nurse in the 80's i looked after so many diabetic lower leg amputees. Usually amputation was the final result after years and years of lower leg ulcers and gangrenous sores. So much unnecessary pain and suffering. It was considered as the natural progression of the disease at the time. Thanks for sharing this valuable knowledge Dr Ekberg. I've cut out all processed foods containing seed oils. I'm 3kg down from my 100kg diagnosed weight, which is a good start, and my glucose is hovering around the 7.2 mark. It's not really an average. It's a % of hemoglobin stuck to red blood cells. Two people can have fsb of 120 but one person's a1c might be 5.4 the other 6.2. the rate at which hemoglobin sticks to red blood cells differs from one person to the next.

You do such a great job explaining things so clearly! The Keto way of eating has been life changing for my husband and I. It has been 5 months and we are both off diabetes meds and my husband no longer needs insulin. My husband's A1c was 4.8 and mine was 6.3. It is higher than I would like, but It is a huge improvement over the 8's and even 12's! I was so frustrated before, as I was trying my best to follow the doctor's advice/diet and it just wasn't working. My doctor wanted to give me more drugs. Thank you for all you do to get the word out there. I wish we had found this sooner because the diets that we were given before did not work for us.

This was such a great video! I have watched and learnt a lot on this topic in the past 7-8 months but this was easily the most comprehensive video on this topic in a short and concise manner. What scares me is how totally ignorant most doctors we meet in practices are today on this topic. I went to see my doc in december explaining all of my symptoms and he was clearly still locked in to the "flat earth paradigm". So I learnt myself, analyzed, made changes and am so much better today. Not perfect but on my way to better health. Had no idea a year ago bloodsugar and insulin can be such silent killers for someone like me who thought I ate pretty healthy. You know, low fat and grazing on loads of grains and carbs...

After reading some of the comments here I must admit I feel a little better about my A1c latest reading. I have my A1c measure every 6 months. I have been diabetic for about 14 years. With diet and exercise I have been able to stay away from all medications for it. I did not take Metformin, don't use Insulin, and have always had a better than good A1c, usually around 5.6 or alike. Everything changed this year however. My latest A1c result came back with a 7.0. I was shocked, disappointed but not surprise. I have severe coronary artery disease, and had a quadruple bypass at the age of 38. I am now 63 years old. On October of 2023, I began experiencing angina pains. Something I had never experienced before. My daily exercise routine began to suffer greatly. I was summited to several tests, from Ultrasounds to Stress tests, as well as MRI and others. I don't really know all the medical terms for some of the tests which were performed but, they all came back clear, just about normal, with small changes which my cardiologist referred to as "minor" and/or "incidental" considering my age. According to him, really "minor stuff". One of the drafted blood vessels showed a blockage of 30%, and according to my cardiologist that was not enough to justify any sort of intervention at this time but, he said.... "We'll keep an eye on it." The problem is, I am not reluctant to exercise. I've cut my exercise routine drastically, up to the point that I can certainly say that whatever "exercise" I do, will probably have no impact on my health and my A1c readings. To be clear, I just about gave up exercising. That has caused a cascade effect, and now, everything is out of whack. I still keep my diet, and try to eat as health as possible but lately, I have been getting readings of as much as 207 every time I measure my glucose levels 2 to 3 hours after my meals. These are reading I had never had before. The highest my readings would go prior to all this was 127 to maybe 139/140, which I thought was acceptable. I started taking Metformin, and I am puzzled by the fact that the reading are going up instead of down. I was taking one 500mg pill a day of Metformin and am now taking two. Still the readings keep going up and that, in turn, aggravates my anxiety, something else I have to fight against with medication. I feel like I am falling apart. That one thing is leading to another, and the cascading effects are all leading to a very bleak future. I don't believe in magic cures. I don't believe in "Natural Cures" with "Natural medicines". The latest one I've investigated suggested eating some peanuts soak in rum for breakfast. Honestly, I just laughed at that one. What else will they come up with, I ask myself. Is Metformin doing more harm than good. Has anyone experienced this reverse outcome while taking metformin? Should I give more time for the medication to work? These are all questions I ask my Doctor and he appears not to have the answers. Is it time to see a Endocrinologist? Do you have an opinion? Can you share your experience here? What would be a reasonable and prudent next step? Thank you.

Dr. Ekberg, THANK YOU for being my #1 driver of change. I started Keto, and healthy eating based primarily on your videos. In 6 months I've lost 45 Lbs, and most importantly, I feel 30 years younger. I'm 61 years old, and had an A1c of 6.9 in October 2021. I was on Crestor, Jardiance, Blood Pressure Pills. I quit my Crestor 2 months ago, but am still taking Jardiance and the Blood Pressure Pills. My Cholesteral numbers have also improved significantly ... "Double" the HDL .... (and higher LDL as well, which my doctor is not impressed with). My Blood pressure is 125/80, which is terrific. Regardless, I feel fantastic, which is "my" #1 marker of improvement. Hope you read this an can help with my delimea. I've been wearing a FreeStyle Libre for 4 months now, and my A1c Blood test was 5.9 in January. Excellent reduction, right? However, I went for another A1c test in late April 2022 and the result was 6.2! Why? My Freestyle Libre is showing an A1c of 5.3! That's quite a difference. I purchased an A1cNow+ self test kit (which is pharmacy grade apparently), and it gave an A1c of 6.0. Again, much higher than the 5.3 predicted by my continous monitor (but lower than the 6.2 lab test result). I'm extremely confused. Can you shed ANY light on the discrepency between the A1c blood tests, and the Freestyle Libre results? In my mind the Freestyle "estimated" A1c should be far more accurate as an average Blood Glucose. Any insights would help, as I've found absolutely nothing that explains my numbers. PS. Keep up the fantastic work!! I've been recommending all my friends and family to start Keto, and to watch your videos.

Charlie Fox --- Any video where the KZbinr says ignore government nutrition advice gets a thumbs up from me . --- I was born in 1970 and prior to my birth a vast amount of American citizens were living on Homestead situations eating from their own garden . After the 1970 period going into the 1980's the American Citizens had moved into town and began eating microwaved meals and something called T.v., dinners . The government back then had pushed the Food Pyramid in the class rooms and made the claim that every meal was to be based on the food pyramid . Well according to the food pyramid structure Pizza becomes the perfect meal it has the grains , dairy, meats and vegetables if you eat the "Hawaiian style" then you even have fruit . It's my belief that the Government created the medical situation that we see now in the U.S. they educated us to believe we were eating healthy because we were in keeping with the food pyramid , so now everyone's sick .

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! If I had found this video 3 months ago when my “borderline “ tipped over to T2 it would have saved me so much heartache. I didn’t get any of this at all from my GP. All he said when I complained Metformin wasn’t working was give it more then 2 weeks. Well, then I complained that Metformin was giving me weird night time carb cravings, to which he had no answer. I never crave toast and jelly, but suddenly I just had to have it at night. Well, you can imagine what that did to my blood sugars. Anyway, found Keto and helped a lot but still can’t get sugars where I want them on a regular basis.(70-90). So I started more prolonged fasts and messing with my Metformin levels & timings. BUT! If I had known that the red blood cells just needed time to cycle out I would not have been so frantic! Seriously, you have decreased my cortisol levels ten fold over here! And maybe I’ll be a little easier on my poor GP when I go for my follow up next month. 🥰

I try exercise about 4 days a week and also do IF (16/8) most days, some days less some days more. I test often because my father and my brothers are diabetic and was advised that this condition is hereditary

My primary physician wouldn't/didn't explain this good. NOW I understand.

Thank you for the explanation I'm scheduled for my first HbA1c I've been on a low carb eating habit for about 3 months.....so when I get the results I'll be prepared and I'll understand it a lot better. Thanks

My A1c has been creeping up for the last 4 to 5 years. Went on Metformin 18 months ago. The last physical in early Dec. was 7.5, the highest ever. I am now on an very low carb diet--sort of a modified Keto. I have reduced my weight from 217 to 193 and continue to fall. Getting back to exercising more. Carbs have fallen to about 80 per day from over 300, but probably need to be lower. I am due to be tested again in early May. I am 75, but hoping for the best.

Thank you k3grappler. I think you are right. With your age and where your carbs and A1c started, it would probably be good to get the carbs down further, but I think you've done very well so far.

Thank you very much for explaining this. I've been told by medical staff that as long as you're A1C is at 7 you're good, no need to go lower than that. Just did not seem right, why wouldn't you want to be lower if someone who isn't diabetic would have a much lower A1C? Appreciate knowing to not be discouraged if the number doesn't go down as fast as we'd like. Thanks~

I really like my family doctor and he is very generous with his time and treats you like you are not beneath him. But he has never explained it anything like this. I would have taken it more seriously years ago and learned about what foods spike insulin. Great video

Thank you El Lobo. I really appreciate your feedback and so glad that you liked it. There are many caring medical doctors, but they don't learn about health, they learn about disease. They are great in emergencies, but have little to offer for functional problems, which is 95+% of what people suffer from today.
