Today I want to give you some tips on how to take a cold shower for the benefits without feeling so uncomfortable.
When we’re too comfortable, our bodies weaken. So, adding a little stress, as long as it’s not overwhelming, can be a positive thing. A few other examples of good stressors are exercise and intermittent fasting.
The potential benefits of taking cold showers:
• Immune support
• Decreased inflammation
• Cognitive support
• Mood support
• Increased energy
• Increased fat-burning
• Improved insulin resistance
• Increased longevity
11 tips to make taking cold showers easier:
1. Start by taking a warm shower and gradually make the water colder
2. Rub the skin while being exposed to the cold water
3. Relax your entire body
4. Slow down your breathing
5. Turn on some music
6. Before your cold shower, do intense exercise
7. Don’t overthink it, just do it
8. Gradually increase intervals
9. End your shower with warm water
10. Gradually do portions of your body in the cold water
11. Do intermittent exposure to the cold water

I've noticed the opposite. I was doing alternating hot bath 10 min/ cold shower 5 min repeat. When I started, my adjoining bedroom was colder than usual, and I was shivering before getting into bath. After I finished up with cold shower, I noticed that the ambient temp in the room was now quite comfortable. Cold showers may be a way to deal with rising heating costs?

I take alternating hot and cold showers, and what helped me the most is, before turning the water colder, thinking "Yay, here comes the awesome cold water" instead of thinking "oh, no, it's going to feel horrible in a sec." I discovered the supreme benefits of cold showers years before KZbin and wim hof were a thing. At this point some 20 years after learning about it I can’t remember my sources, but I do remember it being stressed not to run the cold water on your head. Your video doesn’t mention it either way, but almost all of the accompanying videos of people showering are exhibiting this practice. Not a good idea. I also remembering the importance of ending on the cold shower, Not a warm one. Indeed the sublime warm feeling you feel inside after a cold shower is heightened if you end with the cold water. Lastly, it becomes extremely easy after only a week of daily practice. I think this is worth mentioning to motivate people.

My husband and I began taking 5 to 10 minute cold showers first thing every morning after watching videos by Wim Hoff. We are into the 6th month of this and love it! I can’t imagine starting my days without this and we both are amazed at the changes we’ve noticed. Some of which are increased energy and an overall feeling of alertness/better focus as well as a happy euphoric feeling throughout the day. Even our skin is different…softer, smoother and luminous. We just go with straight cold, no hot water. I don’t even take hot showers anymore as I find this more enjoyable. We sometimes laugh about it as we never thought we’d be into this. If you can get through the first few days of it and stay in long enough to relax your body and breathing, you can begin to appreciate it. Truly amazing and we are converts! ⛄️⛄️

I’m into my 6th month of daily cold showers first thing every morning and love it. The benefits are quite remarkable! If I need to shower again later in the day due to getting sweaty, etc. from activities, then I’ll take a warm shower. From my experiences with cold showers, number 7 is the most important here. Especially when you first start out, every fibre of your body will be screaming at you “DONT DO THIS”. The more you think about it, the more chance you’ll talk yourself out of it. JUST DO IT!! I started out taking the advice of number 1 but found it just prolonged the anticipation of the misery that was to come, for me I quickly realised the best way was to just go straight to cold, starting with the head and face. It took me about three weeks to gain total control of my breathing, before that there was lots of shouting and swearing lol. Start today and in four weeks from now you will be so glad you did. It’s great for developing stronger discipline too. DO IT!

Did you know Mohammad is your God? Allah is your only Intercessor: Allah it is He Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them in six Days. Then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). You (mankind) have none, besides Him, as a Wali (protector or helper etc.) OR AN INTERCESSOR. Will you not then remember (or be admonished)? S. 32:4 Lo! your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then He established Himself upon the Throne, directing all things. THERE IS NO INTERCESSOR (WITH HIM) save after His permission. That is Allah, your Lord, so worship Him. Oh, will ye not remind? S. 10:3 But Mohammad is also your Intercessor: When I see Him, I will fall down in prostration before Him, and will remain in prostration as long as He will, and then He will say, ‘RAISE YOUR HEAD, O MUHAMMAD, AND SPEAK, FOR YOU WILL BE LISTENED TO, AND INTERCEDE, FOR YOUR INTERCESSION WILL BE ACCEPTED, AND ASK, FOR YOUR REQUEST WILL BE GRANTED.’ (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 97, Number 532 (O Allah, I ask of You and I turn my face towards You BY VIRTUE OF THE INTERCESSION OF MUHAMMAD THE PROPHET OF MERCY. O MUHAMMAD, I have turned to my Lord BY VIRTUE OF YOUR INTERCESSION concerning this need of mine, so that it may be met. O Allah, accept HIS INTERCESSION concerning me)”. (SAHIH) (English Translation of Sunan Ibn Majah: Compiled by Imam Muhammad Bin Yazeed Ibn Majah Al-Qazwini, Ahadith edited and referenced by Hafiz Abu Tahir Zubair 'Ali Za'i, translated by Nasiruddin al-Khattab (Canada), final review by Abu Khaliyl (USA) [Darussalam Publications and Distributors, First Edition: June 2007], Volume 2, From Hadith no. 803 to 1782, 5. The Chapters Of Establishing The Prayer And The Sunnah Regarding Them, Chapter 189. What Was Narrated Concerning Prayer At Times Of Need, pp. 329-330 If you are wondering how this makes Allah a Mushrik and a Kafir, the answer is simple: By accepting Muhammad’s Intercession Allah is actually encouraging his followers to turn to a Creature for Salvation, thereby violating his very own instructions as found in both the Quran and specific ahadith. In other words, Allah is actually encouraging and promoting shirk! Place your faith in the real God Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins and you will not perish. Have a good day.

What I do is put my arm into the cold shower without stepping inside. It prepares my body for the coldness. Once I step into the cold shower, I rotate myself (turning my body around 360 degrees). I rotate about three times. This way, the cold water is evenly coating me. Cold showers are so much easier when I do this even during cold weather.

Thank you for the reference to Lake Michigan, Dr. Berg. I'm a fifteen-year veteran cold plunger from Chicago. To this day, I remember my first cold winter shower being almost traumatic at the onset, but now, I don't bat an eyelash before my morning ritual. We have several groups here in Chicago, polar bears, who meet and oftentimes cut through the ice and wade into the icy water for the thrill of the marvelous feeling afterward. Being an endorphin junkie, I take two or three cold rinses a day to reset the lethargy that sets in following a long day of work. I cannot identify the benefits, having practiced this ritual for over a decade, yet I do know that I haven't had as much as a cold since I began. Anecdotally, having tested positive for Covid twice in the past year, I'm happy to say that I never suffered a sniffle, cough, or any of the other symptoms of the infection. I highly recommend cold water showering to everyone. Buck up, step in, enjoy, repeat!

Hi Dr. Berg! Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it very much. If you start with a hot bath or a sauna until you feel uncomfortable, then the cold will be a relief, and over time, you will develop positive feelings when thinking about the cold. Your body's response to the cold will also change over time; it adapts, so don't think that you will always feel the cold the same way you do when first starting out-your body will adapt and it won't be such a big deal to take a cold shower after you've done it for a few years. Self-hypnosis also helps; if you tell yourself enough times that you love cold showers, you will start to believe it. I no longer believe cold showers are uncomfortable, but rather full of sensations that make me feel completely alive. I find the cold has a calming effect after a few minutes, so I always look forward to that feeling. I find it also helps to quit thinking, and to just focus on the sensations you are feeling while experiencing the cold. If you can do this, a cold shower is a wonderful experience full of marvelous sensations that improves your health tremendously. What's not to love about that?

I love to take cold showers. I feel awake and my skin feels so much softer. I don’t waste so much water and energy. It’s so beneficial for the health and the environment. I don’t need any coffee to be awake and I’m not freezing so fast in winter. For me it’s the best morning routine 😃

I used to do a dry brush followed by hot/cold alternating shower. Dr. Berg inspired me to start again. Have been doing cold showers for three weeks now. I start super hot and warm my body, then switch to as cold as it will go. After the third day my body loves it!! Actually can stay in the cold shower and enjoy it. It’s really just the idea of it. I’m 77 years old. I have been the first to get sick last few years. This last week everyone BUT me got sick!! Now that’s a testimony. Thank you Dr. Berg!! We call you our health guru!

3 months now, up to 12 mins on weekdays, started with a minute, really good for maintaining attention and performance at work. Another tip, avoid water to the head and alternate with hot water at the end, back and forth for those benefits. Huberman has an extensive list of tools on the topic, got my ice bath on the way, which I can't wait to finally try, especially now being acclamated to cold showers. The breathing tip is key, and also the mental method is useful to think of each step as a wall you need to climb over. Try physiological sigh or Wim Hoff breathing, and a few controlled hyper ventilating breaths too (3 x cycles) also helps.

Another tip from something I learned from morning Run & Dip at the Outward Bound School on Hurricane Island in Maine. Your mental resistance / desire to avoid is a large part of why it feels bad. If you can go in with the mental attitude of “bring it on,” embracing the cold in your mind, it’s still cold, but it doesn’t feel like a bad experience. Magic!

Been following wim hof method for years and each of these advice works. Singing in the cold also works as it tricks your breath into longer exhale and relax. Gradual move from hot to cold works well, but you have to go all the way to cold every time. Good luck with it - results are great.

Thanks Dr Berg for this information I've been trying to take warm showers recently and just at the very end of it I turn it onto ice cold so that I get a Big chill just before I get out. I noticed I feel much more alert and less dizzy with the ice cold water but I've yet to be able to take a complete shower in cold.

I have been taking cold showers for the last 6 months not everyday but say 4-5 times a week. What really helped me to get into this wonderful habit and be consistent over time was meditation with its slow breathing technique I could more easily concentrate and get past that uncomfortable threshold. Now I stay in 2 to 4 minutes and when I get out I don't dry up straight away but I wait 5 extra minutes, more or less, before starting to remove that water excess. Biggest improvement I have noticed? A higher sleep quality and better mood. I will definitely stick to it going forward as it's been for me a great game-changer.

I remember taking cold showers for a few weeks. I did straight cold setting in the summer (which I finally got a temp check of it being 60°) and it always sucked. I would tell myself, “it’s gonna suck. Get over it, and embrace it.” What helped me immensely was to warm my body by doing a workout that got my core to heat up. The next option was to do look warm, and incrementally start making it colder. That actually helped me out a lot better than cold all at once. Ironically I did find it helped me with stress at work, so that I could think clearer. It made me a lot more “chill” and not so uptight. I shall resume this henceforth.

No need to heat your house before taking cold showers. If the water temperature is e.g. 10 degress C in winter (=50 Fahrenheits), and once you get out of the shower, you feel warm, because the environment around you is warm enough without excess heating. 20 degrees C (68 F) in your house is enough to feel warm. Once you turn off the cold water tap, you will start to feal warm, just try it! After a couple of months of cold showering you will be able to stay out of doors in winter wearing just a T-shirt without feeling cold.

@@Nick_865 Naah not completely true dude... It's not about the water moisturizing the skinsurface. I think it's reasonable to try a gradual approach of starting warm then getting cold, but at some point, you just have to do it. Tell yourself repeatedly that you can do this, and just train yourself mentally that you're strong enough and can handle this. I've been doing cold showers for about a year now, and it gets easier and easier. Some days I don't feel like doing it, and I don't. Other days I don't feel like it, and I push myself to just do it. The more you do it the more your learn what your body can tolerate and you'll start to tolerate more and more. This ability to mentally overcome obstacles and stresses also translates to other areas of life, like exercise, work, and other stresses etc.

For anyone having problems with the cold water , you can start with cool instead of cold. Cool showers for a week or a month then slowly lower the temp. Not everyone can go straight to the cold but there are trucks like this to ease into it. Either way your body will thank you.
