0:57 The #1 treatment for dandruff
1:32 The root cause of dandruff
5:38 How to get rid of dandruff
10:35 Check out my video on acne!
Today we’re going to talk about what causes dandruff and the best natural remedies for dandruff.
Dandruff is the result of a scaly, flaky scalp. The typical dandruff treatment is dandruff shampoo, like Head and Shoulders, which uses a certain anti-fungal and antibacterial chemical. While it may get rid of dandruff temporarily, it’s actually banned in Europe because it’s potentially toxic to a person’s reproductive organs.
There is a particular fungus that’s behind dandruff called Malassezia. In this situation, this type of fungus, which is a part of the normal flora on the skin, has morphed overgrown.
The real root cause of dandruff is an imbalance in the scalp microflora, causing inflammation and an immune reaction. Antibiotics can lead to this imbalance-killing bacteria that keep unfriendly microbes in check and allowing them to overgrow and cause problems.
The best remedy for dandruff:
Mix 1 tsp of the liquid from kimchi in 1 cup of water. After shampooing your hair in the shower, apply this mixture to your scalp. After 15 minutes, rinse the mixture from your scalp.
Another great remedy for dandruff is a mixture of 2 tsp of olive oil mixed with 1/2 tsp of coconut oil, applied to the scalp before bed and washed out in the morning.
Other dandruff remedies include:
• Diluted tea tree oil
• Diluted garlic oil
• Diluted oregano oil
It’s also vital that you change your shampoo and conditioner to natural versions and use a water filter in your shower.
One of the most important things you can do to get rid of dandruff is to fix your diet. You would want to go on a low-carb diet (Healthy Keto), cut out sugar and omega-6 oils, and consume more foods that contain probiotics. Learn more about the keto diet in my other videos.

My wife had bad dandruff that didn't want to go away. Every dermatologist she goes to see they all told her there is no cure for it. We came across Dr. Berg's videos and we started Keto diet. 2.5 months later her dandruff is gone with no medication. Also, we're doing intermittent fasting. We're both down 30lbs and my blood pressure is down 30 points. It's like a miracle.

Yup, my issue has worsened or gotten better, depending on the area in which I've lived. (I'm not a home owner & apt leases run about 12 months.) In one area, I had to resort to only washing my hair at my parents' place due to the dreadful water supply where I lived that year. At the very same place, I had a friend visit from out-of-town who attempted to rinse his face and screamed when the water went into his eyes. (That's saying something, because he was from a coastal town where everyone knows the chlorine is strong.) Meanwhile, the apt people had told me that I was "just sensitive" when I called to ask what was going on with the water supply. I bought a "zero water" pitcher that I would use for a cold douse/rinse when I absolutely had to wash my hair there. 🥶

In India, we use unflavored yogurt on hair (sometimes with a few drops of lemon juice) before shampooing the hair. Put it on scalp and on the length of hair for 15-20 mins and then wash it off. It reduces dandruff and conditions the hair as well. Edit : Also your hair and scalp should be exposed to the sun everyday for at least 10-15 mins.

@@saifmd7001 Yes it did, totally. But you maybe should add up all the factors: clean, healthy, whole foods. I also started drinking every morning a big, hot „bulletproof“ coffee with butter, coconut oil, cream, almond milk, strong coffee of course and added about 7 diff. spices: tumeric, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper, cayenne pepper, pink himalayan salt, a little stevia. This coffee is my addiction, spicy and sweet 😋 and it gives me energy the whole day. I usually eat lunch at 1-2pm and sometimes have something small for dinner (before 6pm), so I get my intermittent fasting. Many times I just eat OMAD, plus I like to do a 2-3 day extended water fast once a month with just water and herb tea (no coffee, no BP-coffee). My hair, teeth, skin and nails are much healthier! I am much healthier overall

I had severe dandruff and itchy scalp when I was 13 back in the '70's. Derma doc told me to use Ivory dish soap, watered down with distilled water, I did and it went away. When Dawn dish soap came out, I used that. Later in life, I had a severe reaction to a sulpha drug, doctor told me not to use shampoos with sulphates in them. I switched recently from Dawn/water to Dr. Berg's shampoo and I love it. It's the only shampoo I've been able to use since 1969!

Great info as always! No idea if it's related, but I started getting more skin/scalp irritation and flaking in March after I started on the blood thinner Eliquis. But it could also have been due to the extra stress from leg surgeries and a DVT clot. Then I started mixing some drops of pure tea tree oil into my shampoo and voila, no more itchy dandruff. I also only wash most of my scalp every other day or two, because my hair is short and supposedly less washing is healthier for the scalp. I've been doing almost everything else Dr. Berg says for years now, so overall it really helps to avoid inflammation and too much stress. 🤓

Dr. Berg, I've suffered with dandruff for the last year or so. I've gone through my 20s with no scalp issues: I've always had great, healthy, shiny hair and a healthy scalp. My mom passed away last year, and as a result of the deep despair I faced I started eating garbage (lots of carbs and sweets) and drinking alcohol excessively. I got covid in October and my scalp issues got worse in November/December. Started shedding like crazy, dandruff was crazy, itchiness like I've never experienced. I went to my doctor, they told me there wasn't a lot they could because if it's caused by covid, they don't know enough to help me. 😒 I refuse to take "there's nothing we can do" as an answer. I knew I had put on weight and was unhealthy but I didn't realize how bad it was. I went back on keto, doing one meal a day, taking several vitamins, and now I'm doing the carnivore diet for a little while, incorporated organ meats (beef liver jerky from WF to start, then actual liver once I figured I could stomach it. Very aware of the potential for hypervitaminosis), exercising: weight lifting and running, making sure I get out for at least 2 hours of sunlight and fresh air every day. My scalp and hair are feeling normal again. I still get itches here and there, but the shedding is virtually non-existent. I'm still washing my hair with city (Chicago) water - and I'm going to get a good filter - but it's amazing how I've been able to reverse my issues with diet. My hair, which was always a light to medium brown, had turned a corpse gray/black while I was unhealthy, the color is coming back into my hair. Truly incredible to watch this transformation I'm going through. Thank you so much for putting out this information and I hope my story inspires someone to finally make the change.

Hi! I'm over 50 and have suffered from an itchy, flaky dermatitis scalp for over 30+ years. I have very thick wavy hair and tend to get a lot of build up. I recently used a baking soda rinse and then a charcoal detox shampoo and it helped my scalp feel better and so clean. I highly recommend it.

Very helpful to say it way saturated and not unsaturated fats. I was having way worse seborrheic dermatitis when I was putting on Shea butter. Once I switched to a liquid at room temperature oil for my skin it was not blazing hot and itchy all the time, just diet related. The Shea butter being hard at room temp has more saturated fat in it than a liquid oil like rose hips, which I use on my face.

I have to add my experience as well. I had an itchy scalp and would have some flakes sometimes. After listening to this video, I realized that I haven’t had an itchy scalp in a while and I just went and scratched my scalp a few times and there was no white residue under my fingernails that I’d usually get when I did this before. I’ve only been washing my hair once a week and it wasn’t intentional. I’ve been doing intermittent fasting since November 2021 and I significantly cut down on my carbs and sugar intake since March this year. I eat mostly meat, dairy, and eggs. 😊

@@WamsyAmsy how did you get started please tell me I want I try it this dandruff is killing me, so itchy. I don’t know where to start. My mom does all the cooking and she cooks Mexican food that’s high in carbs and gluten. Like how did you switch to no carb no sugar no dairy diet? And what foods did you eat throughout the day to give me a idea? Please I really wanna know
@WamsyAmsy
@WamsyAmsy Жыл бұрын
@@lilsushiboi5996 Hi there! How I started was by not telling myself that from now on I will NEVER eat carbs or sugar. Instead I challenged myself to do it just for 3 days and see how I felt after that. Once those 3 days were done, I felt so good that I just naturally wanted to continue to eat this way. It was a mental thing for me, bc saying I’ll never touch another sweet or carb was not realistic in my case. So my suggestion would be to start with a smaller goal - cut the carbs/sugar for a couple of days and see how you feel after. Or try to make at least one meal of the day carb free and gradually increase that. The cravings will go away eventually. Good luck! 😃 I ate mostly ground beef, eggs, dairy. I’d have pasta here and there and some veggies. As with everything, your body will need some time to adjust. Try to listen to its cues. 😊

For a short term fix I can recommend apple cider vinegar. Just use it similar to a conditioner. Use a diluted solution, at least 1:3, massage it into your hair and let it there for a couple of minutes while you wash the rest of your body. If you have some bloody spots it will hurt at first. Then it helped me to leave it on longer... usually until it stopped hurting. The next days you will likely get some skin build up... but after 1-3 days it will be gone and underneath will be fresh, healthy skin. Anyway... rinse it out and let your hair dry. It won't be smelling very nice at first... buuuut as soon as it dries this scent will disappear. I had these problems since my puberty... all the special shampoos and the special creams from my doctors didn't help anything. It just got worse and worse.... I still have these outbreaks from time to time.. usually when I'm under a lot of stress. Most times I can fix it by just slowing down and taking care of the stress... If it's too severe, the ACV still works like a charm.

But you need to do it continusly because it will always return, if you dont use it… Its very painfull in the beginning but you just need to go true the pain, you will be happy with the resultat !

The best remedy is to buy Amla and Shikakai powder. Mix 2 tablespoons of each with some boiling water. Apply on your scalp gently rubbing for 5min. Then leave it in for at least 20min/while you're taking a bath. Then rinse it with pure water. It takes some time and is a mess but worth it! After you have to wash your hair only once or twice a week. It is strong and shiny. No shampoo, no conditioner needed any more. (You can use silicone-free shampoo once a while if you don't have time for the procedure..)😊

Great explenation! I have had severe dandruff problems my entire life, visiting many doctors and using all kinds of prescribed and unprescribed solutions. The problem is most shampoos make you dependant on them and as soon as you stop using them it returns just as bad. The chemicals in them will basically slowly eat you alive. In 2016 I fell in love with a nutritionist. We have been in a relationship over 6 years now and walked a path of healing together. Now I know that the main reasons for my dandruff were gluten and sugar. Every time now, when I step out of my current diet to consume either of these my dandruff reappears after being completely absent.

Having done point (2) I’m better, but there is still dandruff. I’m massaging my scalp weekly with MCT oil with Tea Tree oil, and let it sit for 15 minutes before I rinse out. It works quite well, for me. I’ve also stopped using shampoo and conditioner, using only water. I’ve also stopped using deodorant, but rather wash armpits and groin every morning with lukewarm water and a cloth. Aftet visiting a swimming hall with chlorine, I also do the oil treatment. All trying to preserve my good bacteria, as best I can.

I have done and continue to do most of the things, that you recommend on your videos, for years. I have been using all natural products and eating organic whole natural foods for 10 years. I am not following a keto diet, but do fast daily for about 12 hours on average. My problem I believe is not having my gallbladder. It has been one problem after another following the removal to which I was extremely hesitant to do. I tried every natural alternative that I knew about back then but had no success. I even tried the gallbladder and liver cleanse. It is absolutely frustrating that as a society we are okay with removing organs. Now granted, I know there are medical emergencies that require drastic measures but to remove an organ due to a tiny stone or minor issue that could be resolved in less problematic ways is insane to me. The medical field lets us down in my opinion. I am so glad that you are sharing this information to help people be their own advocates. There are alternatives that do work!

I didn't start having scalp issues til I hit puberty. I briefly had dead skin and a scab break apart on my head and dandruff start. And my hair didn't seem as thick or volumed as it was. After washing out the dead skin and scab, I was left with dandruff. By this point I was also starting to get acne (not much just one or two) which seemed typical for puberty, and some very mild oily skin (only knew that due to a fee blackheads on my nose). So I hot on T-Gel for a time since it was super strong and would use it weekly and regular shampoo every other day. Later I got on head and shoulder (clinical one) and have been on it since. After a couple of days I'll get blackheads and dandruff on my head. So it seemed puberty started all of this...and it hasn't gone away

Your hormones may have a lot to do with it as well. Whenever things go haywire in the body it’s worth doing bloodwork to check if you have a condition causing the issue. We are all complex and it’s never just one thing. I did keto and that is when my dandruff issue began.

Ok, time to chime in here. How I CURED my dandruff. Had it since HS. (Probably sooner.) Usually some over the counter anti dandruff shampoo a few times a week kept it in check, mostly. Several years ago it got bad. Chunks coming off my scalp. I tried EVERY product on the market. I tried some over the counter things like soaking your head in listerine, tried rinsing with apple cider vinegar, even tried coal tar shampoos. NOTHING worked. Went to a dermatologist who took a three second look, said "Scalp psoriasis, no known cause, no known cure" charged me over 200 bucks, gave me a prescription for some expensive drops to stop itching and have a nice day. Yea well.... I had recently started reading up on all the crap in our foods. So decided to look up soap. OH MY GOD! Soaps are even LESS regulated than our food and just about every chemical in soap is an irritant if not a carcinogen. I started looking for all natural soaps. Found one (tried several, this is my favorite.) Dr. Bronner's new castle liquid soap. Thought I'd give it a two week trial and use nothing else. Well the no known cause psoriasis went away. The dandruff I had for decades completely went away. Oh I can still scratch my scalp and get a few flakes to fall, we all shed skin so guessing some of that is normal. But no more flakes on my shoulders. A few other non related rashes I had in other places all cleared up too. Now I had already cut most carbs out, (went on atkins for awhile.) A lot of foods I stopped buying because of all the garbage in processed food now, learned a ton about diet and learning more every day but this psoriasis started after the change in diet. I haven't had a can of pop in several decades now. It wasn't until I changed soap that this all cleared.

I have pre-existing conditions that make it really easy to miss new symptoms by assuming it's an exacerbation of those conditions that are causing the issues. But I was soooooo fatigued for the last month, I knew there was something else wrong. The level of exhaustion scared me, and i was constantly falling asleep. After just a few days on supplements, I am already feeling better! I'm back to my 8 hours instead of 12 hours, plus naps lol

I have psoriasis vulgaris and scalp for almost 11 years. Doctors in my country said they didn't know the exact causes. They gave me oilments, even oral medicine. Not working until now, only temporary and it always came back. I also suffer from GERD. Just recently, i found out your channel about ACV. i drank it for around a month and the symptoms of GERD are slowly reduced, i also eat kimchi, yogurt, and arrowroot powder. it help me reduce the itches in my skin, even if it's slowly. Some even healed. And now, after i watched this video, i remembered that when i was a kid, i often got sick and drank antibiotics. I also have bad life style, less vegetable and fruit, also less workout. Everything is connected. Now, i start to improve my life, by add more veggies and fruits in my diet, also workout even i can only do it 2 time a week in weekends now due to my job. I don't think i can do keto diet but i will try to reduce carbo, especially from rice and bread/white flour. I want to do my best, cause i want to be healthy. Thank you Dr. Berg.
