Great advice! For many years, I have used the trick to measure the pants for fit! I laughed recently when shopping in a second hand market as I noticed a woman staring at me as I measured the waistband on my neck! I am an American recently retired to southern Italy, I found a fabulous second hand shop and have recently acquired an original Louie Vuitton handbag, and a beautiful Versace blouse at a fraction of the original price. It’s not about the label and price point. It’s about the quality and design. I worn scrubs for many years because I worked as a nurse in major trauma and critical care. Now, in retirement i love wearing beautiful outfits, it gives me joy. I dress up to go to the supermarket! Your advice has been very helpful in helping me find my way in the world of fashion, and expressing my individual style. Grazie Mille.

@TheBCompany
@TheBCompany 3 жыл бұрын
@Olivia Purcel I agree...but many people would not - regardless of gender - as they still embrace old-school thinking that prefers obedience and conformity (in women and children)...we can raise their awareness to "check" this way of thinking. Look at our leadership example, leaping to intimidate or shutdown anyone who raises a question...when a child grows up in this environment, they tend to comply rather than dare to think critically. It is a cycle that needs work to break, we can't just wish it away.

Through the years I have found I would rather have fewer clothing items, with the bulk of the ones I do have being high quality, classic styles. I've been using the technique of holding up a top around my bust to check sizing for years. My Mum showed me it when I was a child. It's especially helpful if you're in a wheelchair, as disabled changing rooms are usually a nightmare, either too small, difficult to reach or used for storage & full of boxes. You can also use the same technique for your bottom half. I imagine it would be more reliable than using your neck, for people who are pear or apple shaped. There is a similar technique for socks. I know most socks have added synthetic fibres for stretch, but natural ones do not stretch at all so you have to buy the exact size. Clench your fist & wrap the sock around the widest part. The heel & toe of the sock should meet comfortably & slightly overlap, by about half a centimetre. I worked part time in a sock shop from the ages of 13 to 26, from school to post-graduate studies. It's a method we always used & were a very popular supplier of pure cotton & wool socks in our city. We had lots of regulars, including the staff at 2 local theatres who always had unusual requests. I remember the shop owner's delight when she managed to source a pair of over-the-knee socks for a leading lady in neon pink & green stripe in the late 80s. They were hideous but perfect for the role. I've forgotten what it was.

Me too, I live in the Caribbean so we are in ‘Summer,’ all year round, it’s just that our summer months are usually really hot and humid. We never usually go below 82 degrees so we can’t change our wardrobes around for the seasons. I have got my colors sorted, basically lots of white, along with black, beige and dark blue, with pink and periwinkle blue as accent colors. we don’t have excuses to wear sweaters, coats and all those lovely winter accessories. So I would be really interested on wardrobe suggestions for really hot weather, and, for using them year round.

I love your videos and the focus on developing a personal style. A note on natural fibers. These fibers also are breathable. Where I live in the desert of Arizona, I only wear linen, cotton, or silk in the summer. But, even in the winter, it is easy to overheat in a synthetic polyester fabric. A wool or cashmere will keep you warm without overheating, whereas you may find a coat or jacket in synthetic needing to be taken on and off to regulate temperature.

I love your videos because you do a good job of giving great advice while not being judgemental and taking down other women for the way they like to dress, which I think is a problem with a lot of fashion/beauty channels. You seem like a lovely person

Thank you for teaching and sharing what you know. I grew up with not the best teaching and never even considered getting things tailored until recently. So your videos are perfect cause I truly didn't know any of these things and frankly just felt overwhelmed with my wardrobe. Starting fresh now. Thankyou for being pleasant, simplifying everything and making it seem fun and easy to do:)

These are all very good tips especially for those who are just starting out with dressing better. The colour palette tip is a big one that I recommend to a lot of people. Once you've found the palette that looks good with your complexion that's great, but don't forget to personalize it by highlighting your favourite colours from it. My mom and I have a very similar complexion but our closets are very different with the colours we gravitate toward. It really lets your personality shine which in turn helps you look better in your outfits.

I love your grandma’s tip for checking if a top will fit! Why I have never heard of that before I don’t understand! 😊 Also - I agree with your suggestion about shopping from platforms like Poshmark. I have a few pairs of premium denim that I couldn’t have afforded new but what I spent was equivalent to what I used to spend for jeans at Target. I also bought a new with tags Dawn Levy coat for $25 and a new with tags Walter Baker genuine leather coat for $88. Its worth looking!

I love having a selection of black pieces! It is helpful to have several different pairs of black pants in different cuts and fabrics. I also have purchased a mock neck black sweater, a 3/4 sleeve crew neck, and a v-neck shawl style. I’m prepared for nearly anything when it comes to that base color. I also definitely agree that matching accessories looks more chic. Good tips! I get many compliments too!

Love these tips, they are simple and true! I must say though, generally you must be in shape for the pant around the neck tip. Too many people, even a little out of shape, have a waist larger than the circumference of their neck. This tip is not universal.

Such great tips. I stumbled on the colour palette tips myself after moving over seas and having to fit all clothes in 2 suitcases. At the time, I had red and black glasses, and navy blue glasses, so anything that made it into my suitcase had to be in red, navy, cream or black! I get comments all the time about being "well-dressed", yet I have a tiny capsule wardrobe. So easy to match everything and I never get stuck for outfits! Thanks for your sizing tips 💚

The color palette tip is the best ever. Once I figured mine out years ago it has saved me from spending way more money than I needed to. I used to feel like I HAD to wear color so I’d buy things in different colors and half the time I’d only ever wear the same 2 colors and everything would just go unworn. Now my closet is mainly black and white with only sprinkles of dusty rose, burgundy, and muted green.

I find myself doing this almost automatically. I do have flops, now & again, because I really didn't understand why one thing was perfect & another wasn't. Black, grey, red, & purple are my favorites, with black being my base color & the others are accent. My second base color is a vibrant, cool, red. I always wear dresses/skirts, never slacks or jeans. That way, I feel more put together & retain modesty. You're helping me articulate what I like, why, & what has caused the occasional flop. Thank you.

One thing on button holes: look closely at them. If you see edges of fabric, they were sewn and then cut, which is a cheaper way of construction. It should be a smooth edge of thread, indicating they were cut, then sewn. Also, buttons on lined pieces: flip it over and look at the back. If the buttons were sewn through the lining: cheaply made.
