Honestly this is so good! And machines aren't as scary as you think, once you get how to thred it, its pretty straight forward for simple things like straight stitching or things like zigzag stitches. Trust me youll get it! ❤

@@DressMeUpScotty I always backstitch because to me it feels stronger than just a running stitch and looks more like a sewing machine did it. The lining will help but pressing the seams open like you did can make the seams weaker, especially since the seams are under stress. Pressing to the side will make it bulkier but give it more integrity (quilters are a good resource for this)

I'm still not *super* confident in my sewing machine skills but what has made me go from afraid of my machine to actually enjoying using it is knowing I can sew as slow as I need to. I use that visual of SpongeBob cheating on his driver's test sticking his big toe out of this shoe to gently press the pedal. It helps to practice on a test sheet of scrap fabric to practice easing the speed of it. You'll still run into troubles along the way, all sewist new and old do. A lot of it has to do with getting the tension just right which I still have no mastered yet. Thick fabrics and stretchy ones can also be an issue. But using like thin pillow case material might be perfect to practice with if you plan to make another pillowcase corset. You've got this! ❤

Turned out really cute! Don't feel bad for hand sewing it, that's a major accomplishment. Half the time I prefer to hand sew anyway because I want to sew while watching tv. For your next corset: Don't skip the bones. Even if you don't want to be 'snatched' they still are the structure of the corset/stay/bodice and keep it from wrinkling and folding in half at the waist. Heavy duty zip ties are 100% ok. That's basically what synthetic whalebone is anyway and you only need steel if you are going for some serious support. Also, skip interfacing. Typically you would use something like coutil for the strength layer, but canvas or denim work just as well. I've even cut up old jeans (don't use ones that have spandex in them) and used those as the base layer. Lastly, I know it sucks to hear, but the appearance of your stitches (be it hand sewing or machine sewing) will get better with practice.

You will definitely be unstoppable once you conquer the sewing machine! I was exactly where you are 3 years ago and I would have been way too intimidated to make something like that by hand! I definitely recommend finding the manual for the machine and watch tons of videos for how to work it. Even after 3 years I still refer to my manual often. You've definitely inspired me to get out of my current sewing rut. I have a black dress similar to the one you wore the belt with so now I want to make a corset belt to match!

Very well done for the first time! Also sewed the only corset I ever made by hand because I sew way better by hand than by machine and the seams are short. You definitely don't need a sewing machine to improve your sewing, I sew mostly by hand (re-enactment garb) and I enjoy it a lot more than by machine. Machine definitely have it's perks (speed, easier to sew stretchy fabric etc.) but don't feel like you have to use one to make clothes :)

This is so freaking cute!!! Pillowcases are a great source of small pieces of fabric. Speaking as an experienced historical seamstress who has hand sewn many things, hand sewing is a really good way to get started! You can manipulate the fabric better, you don't have to worry about keeping it in the right place AND operating a machine, and it's the best way to get a really clean finish on bias binding! I'm excited to see your sewing adventure progress!

It's also a fun way to make smaller projects portable, I brought a corset belt with me on a camping trip, because the renfaire was the same week, and its a fun way to pass the time without internet and such!

Ty! Yeah I’ve been intimidated but I’m gonna be biting the bullet soon since it took so long to hand sew. Mine is a vintage machine from the 70’s (from one of the old lady craft room stashes) it is sturdy and should be able to handle a lot and I have lofty plans. Hoping it’ll be my old faithful 😂

Something that helped me with handsewing straightlines (other than just repetition) was to mark on my thumbnail where the edge of the fabric should be and where my seam should be. So you'd have like a little = sign on your thumb to help keep a guide as you backstitch. I hope it helps! You did such a good job! :3

This has given me more confidence to make my own corset, which I’ve wanted to do for like a year now- and I know how to use my sewing machine, but patterns never fit me right and I just immediately get overwhelmed, but maybe I should just do it. Also, I love the small Stargate Sg-1 reference. That’s my fav show of all time and that small sound bite is still living in my head rent free after all these… decades.

I feel you on patterns. I recommend this one if you’re intimidated, and it’s nice she also made a video tutorial to go with it and the pattern is free. Definitely start with a mock up with fabric you don’t care about to try on and to modify the pattern. I’ve seen people draw directly on the mock up fabric to mark where they need to take in/let out- almost like a fabric pattern. So that episode of stargate, Window of Opportunity, is my family’s favorite episode haha. We watched it so many times growing up. I pretty much have Jack’s meltdown memorized 😆

I think this turned out great, and because it's got lots of different colours in the corset, you can mix and match it with different colour pieces. Please video when you go to the ren faires, I love seeing what everyone gets up to. We don't really have them much in the UK and they're mild compared to US ones!

So pretty! I sew by hand too, I don’t have a machine and frankly I’m scared of them 😅 I also run into the problem of the seems looking wonky on the other side so I don’t have an advice for you. I’ve recently learnt to do a french seem that hides the raw edges but it’s probably not aplicable for a corset. Still you might want to look it up for different types of garments. I’m looking forward to more sewing content!! I feel inspired to attempt something new 💜

It turned out really pretty! You can always practice sewing on paper with no thread. Draw out some parrelle lines and then some curves and circles and stitch over them until you feel comfortable. But don't use that same needle for a real project

Something you could do is dye a piece of scrap fabric the same color as the bias tape and sew it to one end of the belt on the inside so when you put it on, it can flap over and cover the gap :-) and then tie it normally (If that’s something that ends up bothering you enough ofc) but it looks so good!
