It has nothing to do with ownership. Eli refused to play for the Chargers. Which is why they traded him for Rivers. It had nothing to do with the ownership. Rivers on the other hand just got unlucky. As their were many time in his career that the Chargers were very good.
@imaratspal3 жыл бұрын
Eli didn't want to play for the Chargers so he wasn't exactly "let go." Problem was Brees wasn't a good QB when they drafted Rivers and he became good that season after. I mean, are you trading Rivers at that point? What do you get for him? It's a difficult position to be in.

BaronVonBielski True, but Brees' numbers really took off after 2005 (he never had more than 3600 yards in SD, always had more than 4300 yards in NO). Philip's a great QB, but Brees was an absolute machine from 2008-2016, throwing almost 5000 yards, 33 TD and 70% completion every year. The tear that Brees went on over that 9-year period might be statistically the greatest in NFL history. Though it's true, Brees probably would've fallen victim to the same problems as Rivers (like Norv Turner) had he remained in San Diego.
@luischauca14296 жыл бұрын

@mattskye52778 жыл бұрын
Same reason the colts, patriots, steelers, Seahawks, and every other team that has a pro bowl qb
@nabeezc8 жыл бұрын
Because Brees was average at best and the team was playing poor so I guess they thought they needed a QB since Brees didn't look like he was going to able to cut it. No one expected him to have a Pro Bowl year and lead the Chargers to a 12-4 record the season after drafting Rivers.
@craven19276 жыл бұрын
It was Drew's third season, second as a starter, and he struggled that year. Got benched at one point, the team ended the season 3-13. The Chargers gave up on him, and took the opportunity to draft his replacement. If it wasn't for a contract holdout between the Chargers and Rivers, then Rivers would have started day 1. As it was, he got into camp late and wasn't ready to start at the beginning of the season. The prevailing wisdom was that they'd ride with Brees for the first 6 or 8 games until Rivers was ready to take over. Brees took the opportunity and played so well that they couldn't take him out. He made the pro bowl that season and kept Rivers on the bench the following year as well, when he finally got hurt in the final game.
@justinpettit34324 жыл бұрын

Lmao, I read this title wrong, reading it backwards like it was satire. Like, "Drew Brees Dumped for Philip Rivers to Save the Saints." bahahaha
@ellsworthconstructionllc8 жыл бұрын
brees wasnt pushed out by brees lol rivers was drafted years later. brees did save the saints but saints saved his career also nobody really wanted to take the risk cause of his injury. so it worked out fine for everybody except brees won a superbowl

Interesting list. I also always put Brees in my top 5, but my list (based on talent and skill, not rings) is always 1. Rodgers, 2. Manning, 3. Marino, 4. Brees, 5. Brady.

The Charges should’ve beaten the Patriots in the AFC Divisional game that year. The bad news is that the Colts still win the AFC Championship game, this time, in upsetting fashion, rather than in expected fashion. Also, as a Jet fan, I really wish that in the 2006 offseason, we had hired either Bruce Arians or Sean Payton. Then, we would’ve acquired Brees from the Chargers in that 2006 offseason. Instead, we hired Eric Mangini, who decided to stick with Pennington and draft Clemens.

Letting Drew Brees go to the New Orleans Saints was another snakebitten move for the San Diego Chargers' failure to reach another Super Bowl appearance to go along with the 1994 run. Also... The Fred Dean trade to the San Francisco 49ers in 1981. Signing David Boston in 2003. The Eli Manning-Philip Rivers trade in 2004. A.J. Smith firing Marty Schottenheimer in 2006.

The Eli trade wouldn't have made any difference apart from the Giants would have won more superbowls and wouldn't be in freefall right now!

I don't see why the Chargers would draft another 1st round QB just three years after doing so (Brees was *basically* a first-rounder), especially if Brees was a pro-bowler. Can anyone explain this to me?
@MrJoaopedro976 жыл бұрын
They didn't trust Brees and had the oportunity to get Eli. They picked him, but due to the fact that Eli refused to play in San Diego, they traded Eli to Philip plus a first rounder
@tsu80036 жыл бұрын
@@MrJoaopedro97 That isn't true at all. The deal with the Giants was made well before the draft. Both teams got the QBs they were after. All that crap about Eli refusing to play for the Chargers was drummed up by his loser of a father Archie, and I mean that literally because he never had a winning season in his entire 17 year career and probably put the Aints in Saints!
@joemckim11838 жыл бұрын
It was really the best thing overall for the NFL and both players that Drew left the Chargers. NFL got two star QBs out of it instead of wasting one of them on the bench. Brees got to go to NO and win a super bowl.
