The current shape of grenades exists because when the US was making their design, they realized the soldiers were used to throwing overhand and throwing baseballs. The stick form need to be thrown underhand. So, it was about the ergonomics and what the soldiers then instinctively did when throwing an object.

During WWI, our European allies provided us with their stick form grenades and the American lads threw them overhand making them less effective and causing them to land too close to where they were being thrown. That's why the US developed a more ball shaped grenade since the American soldiers were instinctively throwing overhand thanks to growing up playing baseball.

It's because American troops during WWI threw the European made stick form ones overhand and they weren't nearly as effective, often landing too close to where they'd been thrown from.
