10:11 While they are pretty much identical, that's a Vickers MMG, not a Maxim. When the weapons were finally taken out of service with the British Army, they were the last weapons to use the .303 cartridge, and there was a very large surplus of these. So, a group of armourers decided to test it's legendary reliability. They performed a full service of the weapon, measuring all it's parts precisely, drove it and the ammunition out to the range, and fired it for a week. Literally a week. Only stopping to feed a new belt, change out the barrels as they wore out, and to shovel away spent brass, nearly 5,000,000 rounds went through the weapon without a single failure to fire.
@PacificEmperor2 жыл бұрын
If they had to change the barrel, wouldn't that mean that the gun has a less than 5,000,000 round lifespan? Or if they changed the barrel of an AK, wouldn't have a more than 15,000 round lifespan?

Looking back on it, what a switch up. At first it looks like all hope is lost, your only independent ally is China who is sacrificing their entire population, then suddenly the two other world superpowers get involved. The British has always been skilled at the art of diplomacy and 'divide and rule'. By dividing potential enemies, they have been able to rule and prosper. Since the time of Elizabeth I, British foreign policy has been directed against the strongest European land power, be that Spain, France, Germany or Russia. Ppl don’t seem to realise the absolute power Britain had at one point… a coalition of the world couldn’t defeat them at sea. They were decades ahead of every country in the world due to industrialization. I don’t think we’ll ever see a hyperpower like that again. The USA came close with the nukes but then the USSR and UK developed them immediately after. The USA also came close again after the fall of the USSR… only for a certain Asian country to take its place, while forming an alliance with Russia to hinder the USA even more. Don’t get me wrong, the Roman Empire and United States both have held a role of superpower (and maybe Mongolian? But not after Genghis) but people forget that statistically, the industrialization of England and subsequently the world was the most important event in measurable human history, even more than agriculture in the Neolithic period. So consider England was the only country for decades… at one point in time they were like some sort of advanced civilization lmao. I feel like Britain was the first and last country to hold such hegemony on the world.

Now people know the britain as a weak island that conquered weak places Similar to france being known for surrendering
@kirkjiao32962 жыл бұрын
Nah you're overhyping Britain here. Naval power is absolutely decisive, but there's limits to it as well. At no point could the UK invade France or something due to this industrialization or something. The worlds most powerful country couldn't succeed in a land campaign in Europe against #2. They could absolutely fight like 3-4 countries and not lose, but they would also struggle to carry out a 1 on 1 to absolute victory. Naval blockades only work to a point as Napoleon proved. It was the Russian invasion that led to failure. At what point was UK the hyper power? After the seven years war for sure. But they lost America soon after?
@tylerthecreatorfan8352 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't stretch it that far, but yes, I agree they were a superpower, but I wouldn't go as far as to say they were a hyperpower.

@@kirkjiao3296 In my opinion it depends on the point of view. If you look at it from a purely militaristic view then yes while UK was effectively impossible to defeat in war due to their navy they would have trouble decisively defeating any continental power as well. 2:38 I'd say it's because for the most part, Britain didn't really invade other mainland European powers. Sure, they were rivals, but most of the Empire's conflicts were colonial and FAR away from mainland Europe. You'll notice whenever these European Coalitions form, it's because one mainland power grows too ambitious, and begins expanding their borders with other powerful European nations. So, in order to prevent the British Isles themselves becoming a target for this one, very expansive and aggressive power, it pays to fund the opposition.

Gatling didn’t create his machine gun because he thought it’d create so much death and destruction that nobody would want to go to war. He created it because he thought it’d reduce the number of people needed on the battlefield and therefore reduce casualties. The logic being that instead of 100 men shooting single shot rifles; you could have 1 man firing the same number of shots in the same amount of time. It makes sense until you realize you could just send in the same amount of men with Gatling guns and become an overwhelming force that inflicts way more casualties lol

Hey drew! Love your channel. Since you're interested in world history (especially ww2) I would highly recommend watching the documentary "the silence of swastika" from aktk KZbin channel. Its a very fascinating and informative documentary about how the symbol h! T l er was using was presented as a 'swastika' by the west whereas it wasn't even that! And how to this day, hindus face hinduphobia in the west due to it.

@4:40 since it was suggested before and comes up so much in this video; germany would have won, but not "if oil" but if japan had attacked russia and thus kept the US out of the battle... that 500 billion to the USSR and the 2 extra fronts wernt insignificant, also an attack by japan on the ussr would have meant stalin would have to divert a force to the east , even by transsiberia rail weeks worth of time loss and numbers divided
