Hello Gentlemen, Charge weight for the M/55 Patrone was 4.9 g (29 zent). It is all in our book on the Dreyse Needle-Ignition System. Regarding needle bending/breaking, we conducted demonstrations at Bisley, with over 60 rounds without misfire or bore fouling with a Karabiner M/57, chambering the M/55 Karabiner Patrone. Also given demonstrations with a M/41 and various other models again without bore fouling. Possibly hotter climes has an effect, as Europe is generally cooler/damper. Needle constantly breaking and firing from the hip due to breech gas egress is a canard perpetuated in many books. Furthermore, each weapon was given its own needle length which was marked on the receiver side. The mating cone system was designed to partly trap in the male cone recess and deflect escaping gas forward and up (never noted fouling on the rear sight arrangement). The bolt has to be struct firmly with the palm of the hand to ensure that the cone interface is effected by the camming of the bolt handle, thus ensuring better breech obturation. This was in the training manual. Regards, G and L A-R-West FHBSA

I was watching the Chap from Bloke on the Range talk about the French M1829 musketoon, and then there was a link to your Danish Tige rifle video. I found that amazing, so I binged your entire Dreyse vs. Lorenz series. Absolutely fantastic.

Glad you enjoyed it! I like to explore more context about these venerable old guns than just taking them out and shooting them. So much history wrapped up in them!

Mass and velocity vs. Rate of fire. What a contest and balancing effect.

Radetzky proposed new rifle tactics and military reforms for the Austrian military to the Habsburgs at the first introduction of rifles in the Napoleonic Wars. They ignored him and payed the price at Koniggratz.

I would think that during a lull in combat a trooper would have swabbed the bore to clean part of the fouling. Just like we would swap barrels in a machine gun and poured lube into the action. These troops would have (like you mentioned) known about the decency in their weapons, just like modern troops do. Good After Action Review. I have reloaded from the prone, while hunting, but from a horn and measure. I did it more on the side then over me like you did. I was able to get a full charge in easier then you did, but I could take more time to do it also. It wasn't easy at any rate.

Good video hope your channel does well. I have a Danzig. There are almost no vids on it. Since you guys appear to be into the "German" stuff. Have you ever live fired one?

You did a video shooting 4 rounds per minute with a musket... sounds like a similar record-breaking video with a Dreyse is in order!

Might try that when I’m back home after deployment. Definitely need to spend more time with the Dreyse!

Do you think you will get your hands on some Langblei bullet molds again any time soon ?

For an average infantry combat range would be in my opinion would be about 400 yards the "Riflemans Quarter Mile" using rifled bore muskets or repeating rifles. With rifled barrels using optimistic sights for volley fire at long ranges using platoon, company, battalion or regimental units at different ranges could have been effective. The British have proved this during the Crimea conflict with muzzle loading rifles. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870s proved that firepower was more important than long range engagements. German and French units were able to move faster to make movement to contact to closer ranges. Thus making rifles to load faster and lay down heavier fire down range to suppress and individual marksmanship a priority after. With the invention of repeating multiple shot rifles the muzzle loading rifle are obsolete and useless.

I recently discovered this channel and like it very much. Here is a friendly suggestion: you gentlemen need to stop talking over one another. It is at best distracting.

You talk a lot about fouling and not cleaning the rifles. But how long would it take to clean these rifles?
