Hi! I have a kinda serious problem. I was in class and I fell on the back of my chair, hitting my head and my braces poked my bottom lip making a like piercing but the hole didn’t go to the outside. Its numb the next day, I tried putting something cold but I didn’t feel the coldness when I put it on my lip. I’m kinda scared what should I do? 😰

Message to all my bros and sisters who are or have got those braces .... I know that shit hurts 😫 yeah I know they hurt freaking alot coz I too have them but remember those spacers, expanded, wires, bands and aligners they all are just a quiet tough obstacle we have to live with for few months or years for that beutiful teeth u gonna have 😀 so don't worry when u feel its unbearable cry a bit it will relieve u but just remember never to give up .. i haver braces and i broke 6 brackets, a some tips 1. don't chew on any ice, or any gum, some freeze dried candy, or any gummy candies. may brake or bend brackets or wire. 2. eat freeze dried fruits like apple, bananas, pears, etc. 3. ask a ortho abt freeze dried candy or look it up. 4. stay away from biting any meatal items, will bend wires, brake brackets. 5. don't eat anything to crunchy, may brake brackets. have a nice day and that's all the tips I can give you today :)

That numbing gel tip + warm salt water has been in heavy use this last week when I recently got a gum graft & the swelling caused my lip to develop an ulcer over a front bracket with the little stick part. That was worse than the graft site healing. It's mostly healed now, but the ulcer spot kept hooking on the bracket ;-;

It's been 6 years since I first got my braces. For 6 years I have not been brushing my teeth enough, I've always been missing my dentist appointments, I don't get them cleaned by my dentist. Now I have cavities on every single one of my teeth they are also starting to go back to how they used to be before I had braces on.

Hi Dr Greg, I've had my braces for a year already and I'm still in the process of aligning my teeth. My orthodontist says that my teeth are exceptionally stubborn because I have dense bones around my teeth. Are there any other biology-related things that could prolong treatment? Have you ever had patients who have similar case to mine?

I was very frustrated as an adult to have braces put on in 2018 and I am "expected" to have completed my treatment in 2023. it's thought depending on the situation. my ortho company switched doctors on me 3 times so far and each have made different changes to my treatment. I won't be surprised if it takes longer than 2023 as it's much harder to do treatment as an adult than a younger person. Best of luck to you.

I got a waterpik and a oral-b IO9, but my orthodontist says they are bad, and I should instead use a manual toothbrush and interdental brushes. I'm not sure why my orthodontist feels this way, but I'm 1000% sure my oral hygiene is better with an electric toothbrush. I don't like ignoring the orthodontist's instructions, but my oral hygienist says my brushing is fantastic, so I'm thinking to maintain my current waterpik (and interdental brushes) + oral b io9 routine. I tend to brush too hard when I use a manual brush.

i think they say the electric brush is bad because it’s hard to brush the gum with the brackets on your teeth and they want to make sure your gums stay healthy during treatment. But i use an oral b io too and i haven’t had a problem either

Dr Greg, I hope you see this because I need some help. I just got a palate expander in and it really sucks! The dentist said I'll probably have to have it for several months. Is there any way to make the palate expander work more quickly? Other than wearing the rubber bands and turning the key like he says. Are there any other tips to make this process go quicker? I'm an adult btw.

Hi doc! I'm 2 weeks into my ortho treatment ( 32 y/o with severe crowding) . So happy to finally get braces and have been adamantly cleaning and flossing my teeth (also got a waterpik!) I've noticed though my gums have become considerably swollen. I'm hoping it's just my mouth adjusting to the braces and not anything to do with cleaning since I feel like I've been keeping my teeth pretty dang clean! Is gum swelling normal at this beginning stage? Thanks for all you do!

Yes gum selling is very much normal, not only with the inclusion of braces but flossing properly during earlier stages(braces or not) will cause bleeding and such but don’t let that discourage you, you are on the right path.

I have a question. I have had my braces for almost 4 years. I had an overbite and my front 2 teeth overlapped. I had all 4 of my pre molars removed to bring back my bite. Oh and I have a tongue thrust because I use to suck my thumbs. Now my teeth straighten out after a month and my overbite was finally brought back this year, the spaces of my premolars keep opening and closing based on how I was told to wear my elastics. Now I was told to wear my elastics a certain way the raised the whole right side of my mouth so now my bottom teeth are slanted. It is now that my ortho said I’m almost done. Sorry, here is the question what do I do now? Because my bottom teeth are slanted and my ortho is like well we did all we can do and I was a complicated case but I don’t think so.

Had braces in 3 days and it sucks...it hurts, not like hitting your toe with a hammer, but like constant numbness in whole mouth. 2 years are a lot, but I guess the end result will be worth it. My orthodontist don't have colored rubber bands😭. They said they don't order colored ones and only order clear ones. And I just don't use turmeric in my food and it helps soo much and my rubber bands don't stain .

it’s normal for the top set to come over slightly. i hav braces and im about to get them off but i had a severe overbite. they look for a slight overbite because if the teeth were perfectly aligned they wouldn’t be able to bite or work properly. ask if u hav concerns but it’s probably normal and looks good!!

A small overbite is healthy! I had the exact opposite...my front teeth used to come in contact too "vertically" and I didn't realize it...my top teeth broke (only the tip) and they have to put crowns on them...I'm currently wearing braces and have a temporary restoration so the teeth look good while under braces treatment...they need to create a bit of an overbite so I don't stress my front teeth again... Just had my first "adjustment" today and it feels so weird, the pressure is back again and hopefully will be gone in a few days...but I realized my teeth feel so "loose" whenever I bite down on anything, especially the front teeth...well...this means the braces are doing their thing, but at the same time it's so weird man xD
