Where do the cells in your blood come from? We find out by watching episode 6 of Cells at Work (Hataraku Saibou) from a real doctor's perspective! I'll be breaking down what's on screen, reacting to the scenes and explaining a little more about the medicine and how the cells work.
We learn about how erythroblasts become erythrocytes, why pseudomonas infections are so bad, what are NK cells, how your cells recognise viruses and cancer cells, and much, much more!
As with all these reviews I skim over a lot of medical terms, please leave a comment if you want any clarifications!

Why does our red blood cell have red hair? Well let me tell you she has a verry serious mutation that causes a verry dangerous sickness we call: main-character syndrome. It causes a person to have verry notable features so any random person will recognise her as a main-character.

I think you can make a new video of 5 things may have missed after ep.7 . I already had a few: 1, The cell that sends reports of nausea and emesis is a Nerve Cell according to the author 2, The Memory T Cell in ep 5 is actually a Memory B Cell, since the memory t is in ep 3 with the pink notebook 3, The gun of B Cell is made from the structure of different types of antibodies. For example his gun in ep.5 is the real shape of IgE antibody 4, natural killer cells have chances to attack Cytotoxic t cells since NK is one of the major factor that causes autoimmune diseases and just a note, the chapter 27 of the manga is a specific chapter that describes the differentiation of granulocytes and the Left Shift of band cells.

I personally find it extraordinary that the anime is able to relate to both sides of Dr. Hope through itself. A. the technical jargon that we expect him to react to and lecture about, and b. the artistic license the show takes that isn't anatomically accurate, BUT Dr. Hope seems to relate to it from his own experiences becoming a doctor.

AE-3803's red hair has only been called out during this storyline- they decided to make her an erythrocyte simply because she had red hair, but nobody bats an eye at it being significant. Her number is a play on this though because AE3803 is the hexcode for the color of her hair. Her senior is named AA5100, that also being a hexcode that produces a color that matches said character's hair. I explain this in reference to how they are colored in the manga's colored illustrations. Meanwhile the name code for the protagonist neutrophil was eventually cracked (and by cracked I mean the official fan anthology book explained it)- his name is a verbal pun: 1146 is said "i-i-shi-ro" verbally sounding similar to the words good/nice and white, Ī and Shiro

@alexandermayro7145
@alexandermayro7145 5 жыл бұрын
Isn't AE-3803's number also a verbal pun of some kind? I could be wrong, but I feel like I remember reading that somewhere... Also, the number for White Blood Cell 4989 (a minor character usually in the background, in episode 2 he was the one who almost fell into the abrasion) is also a verbal pun, sounding similar to "having a hard time."
@gtf234
@gtf234 5 жыл бұрын
Correct, U-4989 is the Neutrophil that has the wide eyes out of U-1146's regular squadmates; he's typically shown doing something goofy in the background or improvising a weapon in nearly every fight ranging from using a box of manju to tying his knife to a pipe and using pots and pans as armor plating. His number is said as Shi-Ku-Ha-Ku, which sounds like shikuhakku, as you said: "having a difficult time" The heroine of BLACK is U-1196, the 9 and 6 being Ku and Ro when read number by number as they do, changing the pun in U-1146's White to Black. I am not aware of the Erythrocytes having such puns beyond the hexcode gimmick, though my memory could be off.

I really like the police analogy. The killer t cells are like cops because they have to be informed of the situation, there has to be someone on the radio telling them what the suspect looks like. The nk cells are like detectives, they look at the evidence and crime scene first to follow it back to the perp, relying on their ability to sniff out suspicious activity

For those of you who, like me, wanted to understand how NK cells work without the analogy, I looked it up :) The way cells bring pieces of their insides onto the surface is by using a molecule called MHC-I. These molecules actually take those pieces out to the surface. As we know, when an MHC-I molecule takes a pathogen's antigen onto the cell surface, then T-cells can recognize them and destroy them. So some pathogens have evolved a defense, where they stop the cell from producing MHC-I, thereby stopping their antigens from coming to the surface where T-cells can see them. In response, we've evolved NK cells: the NK cells will basically try to kill any cell, but are inhibited / stopped by MHC-I molecules. So when an NK cell finds a healthy cell, the natural MHC-I on its surface will stop it from attacking; but a cell that's had its MHC-I reduced from an infection or other abnormality won't inhibit the NK cell, allowing it to destroy the abnormal cell. Cellular and molecular biology are cool :D

You know, I wondered why the NK cell, as a character in the anime, was a jerk to other cells. But given your explanation, it actually makes sense. They’re always on the prowl looking to destroy other cells, they’re just inhibited from doing so because of the regular expression of MHC-1. Otherwise NK is just looking for an excuse to attack.

I know this is old, but I'm just discovering this series now, and I'm wondering, is it possible for NK cells to malfunction and ignore MHC-I and kill the healthy cell anyway?

@@strawhatleon I haven't seen code black yet, but I imagine that might happen in auto-immune disorders. If Cytotoxic t-cells can overreact and kill healthy cells, I'm sure Natural Killer cells can do the same. Maybe it could be represented by the NK cell being "blind" and thus unable to see or sense the MHC-I on healthy cells, thus killing them.

I think the macrophages are maids because unlike the neutrophils, they mainly act as cleaners inside our body, macrophages are not the first fighters to deal with invaders. Additionally, as you have seen in this episode, the macrophage enucleates erythroblasts, so they are nurturing cells that make the red blood cells mature, so an analogy would be being a teacher to take care children (erythroblasts). I would consider the macrophage is very versatile, so that’s why the author gave her this character. There will be another episode talks more about the macrophages, so you will know why such strong cells are characterized as maids.

This is where the show starts to get... dystopian. So far, the "human body as a giant company/factory" analogy has been fun and relatively light-hearted, but the cancer episodes turn it into some kind of Orwellian nightmare. When you're a cell, thinking and living for yourself is the greatest crime imaginable, for which the penalty is immediate death. Orwell himself used the analogy of "cells in an organism" to describe what a totalitarian regime does to people, reducing individuals to the mere sum of their usefulness to the system. It's all well and good when we're just talking about regular, dumb, cells, but these cells are literally humanized. They're given character, wants, needs, emotions, and even interpersonal relationships. Seeing a person just like them, who's only crime was being born "wrong", hunted like an animal for just being who they are, then being expected to root against them in favor of an uncaring state/company/system, is wholely unsettling to me. Still, I love that they didn't ignore or try to sugar coat this rather bleak implication of their world. This show is a damn masterpiece.

I think their butting heads was mostly to display their natural aggression as characters, used in turn as an allusion to their actual roles as cells: Killing other cells, foreign or otherwise infected. It’s a way of saying “Piss me off and I won’t hesitate to make you next on my list.” Again, because they’re known to kill cells produced by the body as well as foreign cells. (Unlike Neutrophils, who only ever display aggression towards foreign cells.) Not that they’d ever kill a normal cell for no reason... But it works as a character trait for those cell types.

Here it's an 'english' (= well mannered) very attractive Maid with that air-head feeling in the way she speaks and also her mannerism. Red blood cell has protagonist hair. Basic Japanese animation trope, where the main characters are differentiated from supporting or background characters. It makes her stand out, signifying that she's different or special in some way, hence the cowlick and coloration. In Japanese culture, being a natural red-head is supposed to be special, considering most Japanese are historically black or brunette haired. It's seen in some of their folklore, and frequently pops up in anime storytelling. The cowlick is along the lines of the hair antennas from Love Hina, or the spikey hair seen in Yu Gi Oh, where the distinct colors also come into play. In short, sorry guys; her hair is simply a stylistic choice, not a medical reference beyond her being a red blood cell.
