A nice little movie, but the description is wrong. It is about a young orphan girl who comes across a dog out in the desert and is found by a doctor who is researching spotted tick fever. The orphan Jenny is played by a young Natalie Wood, and also stars Walter Brennan, Ruth Warrick, Dean Jagger.

Yes, that was "Alfalfa", whose real name was Carl Switzer. He was killed in the late 50s by a man who Carl went after with a knife. It was ruled justifiable homicide. Carl thought the man owed him money. When the man disagreed and refused to pay, Carl came after him with a knife. The man shot Carl in self-defense, killing him.
