My first time turning driftwood and if they are all like this, I'm hooked! LOL! I suppose in reality they are not so I think I got lucky with this beautiful piece. I don't know the type of wood but it may be Myrtle wood from Oregon.
Finished in shellac.

I’m from Oregon, now in Arizona. I make fine furniture and have used lots of that gorgeous wood. It’s Myrtle wood, only found in a very few places in the world. So yes, it’s rare. Great job turning that gnarly chunk of wood.

Love this piece! After my parents retired they booked a trip to California, Washington, Oregon and my Dad brought me a covered desk top box made of Myrtle wood back on the plane. My mom said he held in his lap all the way! That was probably 35 years ago. I cherish that piece dearly. Oh dear. I am tearing up again. 😢

You know, Phil, this piece of driftwood sort of represents us in a way. No matter what we look like on the outside....... Each person has a hidden beauty within..... Don't you think? In some it could be intelligence, in another person it could be compassion, another would have insight, and still another might have inner strength... Or joy..... Everyone's got something. This little piece of Driftwood of yours could teach us all a lesson. Look at all the beating it's taken as it's washed through the ocean and hammered on the sands of the beach (as we go through life people become that way). And then somebody like you took the time and trouble to find its inner beauty, and then shine it up! It seems to me that we can and should do that with each other.

Every time I start my lathe, I hear your voice "mask and face shield on!". Yesterday, the little Walnut bowl I was working on exploded, and I'm so glad I had my face shield on! I was almost finished with it....so just a reminder to all you turners out there....obey the Man. It may save your face. I was able to wood glue the bowl back together and finish it. Sometimes it's a practice piece, but you learn so much. Thank you for your wisdom! And nice bowl!! What a challenge,!

Phil Anderson and his amazing sand-o-flex! I have to say that you’re one of my KZbin woodworking idols . You always seem to know where and how to mount these natural pieces to bring out the best in them. This piece is simply amazing, thank you! I think that the Sand-o-flex is going to be the next tool that I’m going to invest in. Your the only turner that I’ve seen use it on KZbin, but you can’t argue with results.

When I get to see pieces like this it reinforces to me how fortunate I am that people like you exist Phil so that I can sort of forget my disabilities & all the associated pain & relax while my friend Phil sets himself to explore & release the beauty of nature specifically in wood. You are a master my friend at working with, not against nature. With your wonderful way in commentating 'on the run' shows just how much you immerse yourself in carefully exposing the beauty just waiting to be release in your masterful way. Totally relaxing & wonderful craftsmanship on show for "all to enjoy'. What a joy you really are to the world of wood turning my friend. A truly magnificent piece of artistic wood turning in any way you look at it. I 'give up' on trying to say your 'best piece of work' because you keep on producing them. Keep it up my friend. Watching him uncover what nature has hidden with his hands and a few tools, it is amazing to me. Phil, I loved this piece. You never disappoint. Your vision is just outstanding. I turn but I don’t have the vision to take a crappy piece of driftwood to the masterpiece you created. Awesome!!!

Wow, thank you, Gord! It was quite a surprise to me. The wood was so rough and gray and then we got this! Just never know about driftwood, I guess. I'd like to try more but I'm afraid of being disappointed. They can't all be like this, can they? LOL! I see you have a new video, hooray! I will check it out, soon!

As my turning mentor said: “never chuck a piece of wood you aren’t prepared to eat”. I recall turning a huge piece of Pine; turned to change tools; heard the funniest sound from the lathe; as I turned back, all I saw was this HUGE piece make the prettiest arc you could imagine. Would have bisected my nose and front teeth if I hadn’t gone for a gouge switch.

Ah, yes, the old turning mentor bad information thing. What he should have said was never stand in the line of fire. Also, if you are not turning, turn the lathe off. I'm so glad you weren't hurt, Samuel!
