3D Printed Lamborghini custom suspension arm - Murcielago GT1 project

We'd already made suspension arms for this project, but I'd found the motion ratio of the damper was incorrect & I'd run out of space as the damper passes through the upper arm. So we 3d print a couple of prototypes to check clearance before having the final items machined from aluminium.

Love seeing the quick engineering process. Was the issue the motion ratio, the spring rate, or both? Because the further you angle out the strut assembly, the less net spring rate you get.
@driftworks
@driftworks 3 жыл бұрын
The further out the pivot point for the spring is mounted, the more effect the spring has on the suspension movement. The car was undersprung with the stiffest spring we had. It's been moved outboard 70mm and has possibly made the same spring a little too stiff. I'll know once I drive it and correct as required.

This should be familiar to anyone who's tried messing with modified linkage plates/pivot points on their full suspension MTB to gain more wheel travel. The more leverage ratio you demand from the rear shock, the stiffer the spring rate must be. Your new lower leverage ratio on the Lambo will give the damping an easier time aswell.

Phil, there’s no doubt that that’s some ingenious working but given how much you’ve altered the OEM setup/engineering do you have any concern of the car’s ability to travel at high speed without failure? I’m in awe of how you changed it

Just wondering with all the work your doing trying to figure out a better suspension why havent you moved the actual mounting locations so you can run longer arm that mount close to the middle of the car like. Formula 1 car. You said you are doung this to get the car as low to the ground as possible while making the car handle even better

Out of curiosity, why can't arms be made out of solid fill 3d printed plastic? Or even like single arm camber rear arms for example
@hurst_luke
@hurst_luke 3 жыл бұрын
3D prints are built in layers. The layers can seperate under certain stresses causing the part to fail. Only really good for prototypes. Very high end printers can do sintered metal parts which might have been an option.

Good video, although i didnt like the brake calipers hanging on the brake line. A ziptie would do much better job.
@driftworks
@driftworks 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do it on a normal car, but the brake pipe faces down on the chassis side and it has a 10 degree on the caliper, so it hangs perfectly with no kink and no risk of damage to the brake pipe or caliper.
