Hi Wes. I've been watching your videos for several years now and have enjoyed them immensely. I grew up on a farm and used a mix of two cylinder and modern tractors. JD M's to 720's to 3010's to 8650's. I loved farming and the farm life. Those days are long gone as we now rent our farm to a large farmer (farms in excess of 50,000 acres). Your videos bring back a lot of wonderful memories. It looks like Tim was running in 5th gear!!!! He would probably run it in 6th if he could. LOL!!!! Keep up the great work. Thank you....

My Father had a 720 and a 730 when he quit farming in 1965. The people who bought it when he quit farming had the 720 completely rebuilt, even installed a new drawbar. I believe that was in the 1990's. It had 18 or 19000 hours when it was rebuilt. They even repainted it. Both were excellent tractors in their day, still are as far as that's concerned. Enjoy your exhibition of the 720, brings back memories.

Story Time! When I was a kid we owned a 720. Dad always bragged about cultivating 43 acres of corn and only used 11 gallons of fuel. He said the slower the engine bogged, the more power it made. Those 2 cylindar engines were incredibly fuel effecient. Originally it was a narrow front and grandpa bought a wide front at an auction. One of my earliest memories was switching those front ends. Dad was able to hold up the wide front and line up the holes but was a hand short to put the bolts in so he got my 3 yr old ass out there and I put the bolts in. It was painted up sharp but we traded it and some boot for a 4320. Still have the 4320, one of if not the best designed tractor JD ever built. But I wish we still had the 720. It was a pony start. The trick was to shut the fuel off to the pony motor and let it die or the next time you went to start it, it would flood.

I just finished putting new brake pads on my 53 John Deere R. Just remove 3 bolts on each brake housing and take to the bench so you can disassemble them to rivet new brake pads on. Easy according to KZbin. Took 3 nuts off of one side to remove a brake housing and there was not enough room to pull it out. Ended up removing the fenders, the floor board and the lower dash, which are not light. Two hour job turned in to a two day job. Live and learn.

Nothing better then the old ones , I can hear the in my dreams of my youth when I worked farming , we had vegetables we took to market in Philly besides huckstering on Saturdays on the streets of Philly. Your love for that 720 is the same with me and the 806s and the 1206. Just raw horsepower that just wants to run. I'm happy as hell running one of them most days. Old iron never dies, sure they get a few new parts, but most things need new pieces when they are 50+ years old.
@bwtupper8 жыл бұрын
We had a B John Deere, A John Deere, 720 John Deere and a 4010 John Deere. We used the B mostly to pull a hay rake, the A was used to pull the harrow and a trailer for hauling bales. The 720 and 4010 were used for tillage. My Dad used the 720 to pull a 1-row corn chopper. He said that running the 720 and a Case (Don't know what model) they were neck and neck until they came to a slight hill, the 720 would out run the Case. One thing that you learned about the 720 . . . it had the most felt torque of any tractor I drove. The engine would lug way down but if you weren't careful it would die in a heartbeat. Our 720 has a starter motor. It doesn't run anymore because the starter motor won't start.

Wes, I've said it for years, the "old iron" JD Johnny Poppers are way better than today's tractors. They aren't big hp but, they are pure torque. That's in how the engine's are built and designed.

love seeing the old girls get out to stretch their legs. Great view with you perched on the drill. You know I never was a fan of johnny poppers until watching your channel. (still kind of a Farmall guy though) It's all about the torque and the lead in their britches when it comes to pulling tractors. Those old ones like that were built just for pulling. The newer ones are mulit purpose built, built to run stuff off of PTO and/or have front bucket and the more horsepower is great when it comes to working up little field areas with a roto tiller or mowing or lifting hay. That old gal would outweigh a newer tractor of same horsepower by quite a bit I am sure and the two lungers had huge torque compared especially to the new little four cylinders that they are getting more horsepower out of with turbos and higher RPM.
@bigtrucker269 жыл бұрын
turbos help with horsepower and fuel economy as well, but yes, their main effect is on torque

Around here in New York you wouldn't be able to do that with that tractor. Maybe in a flat hay field but no way in a hilly field and definitely not in a field with any kind of cultivation. I envy your conditions. I was shocked by your videos of the 4450 pulling a 22 foot disc and it's only a 2wd!! We pull our 24 foot disc with an 8320. It pulls good, our 8110 is a turd on it and the 8120 does ok. It must be your soil or something.

I started off with the Peltor's and then Work Tunes. 3M I believe has taken them over. This last set is 2 years old. The set before got rolled over by 700 bushels of corn. :) The Peltors lost one side of the stereo feed. I tried to rewire jumper wire to make the other speakers work but no joy. Each new pair has been an improvement. Better noise reduction, better reception on the radio, better speakers in the head set, better padding on the ear pads. ect. The original pair was something like 75 bucks (well spent money IMHO) the last pair was below 50 and I think I have seen them advertised on ebay or amazon for about 35. Ears and Hearing a terrible thing to waste. When I started wearing them around I was getting rude/crude hand gestures from people. Now 10 years later I see more people than not wearing them.

58 HP at the belt, wide open throttle of 1,125 rpm is 367 lb-ft at the belt. Just like old traction engines these things were built to pull and pull. They may not be as fast at doing the work hp is a unit of power so it factors time. But in pure force output they aren't weak.

Looking at some of the older videos on this Sunday night. I like seeing the older tractors still getting to do real work here in the 2010's. Does this 720 have an electric starter or a pony motor?
@caseman78969 жыл бұрын
It was told to me many years ago that tractors with 1100-1200 engine rpm had a longer stroke which results in a stronger torque than when tractors had come out with 2200-2500 engine rpm which as far as I know first come to the market in the mid Sixties. I once owned a John Deere gas tractor manufactured in 1965 and had 2500 engine rpm. It was a good tractor although it was hard to tell if it was as good as a comparable John Deere 2-cylinder of similar horsepower. Mine was a 2010.Now maybe I was told wrong that a longer stroke means more torque. At any rate it would be interesting to find out if this observation is valid.
