"The Klingons are arming The Village People." -- RMB Old _Star Trek_ was wilder than I remembered. The writers of nu-Trek really need to immerse themselves in 'professional under pressure' voice logs of airline pilots, air traffic controllers, rescue services, etc. There's a video out there of a Lancaster bomber crew audio log from WW2. You hear this slow disaster unfold ("Engine 4 is on fire." "Okay, shutting down engine 4." "Still aflame. Not spreading." "Okay."), but it's all handled with calm and aplomb by men not given to hysterics. That is how a career Starfleet officer should sound: aware of the high stakes, but capable and _in control of themselves_ .

Star Fleet was modeled after the US Navy. Of course the Star Fleet Officers are the best there are. In fact there was an episode of the Original show that mentioned if you washed out of Star Fleet Academy, you could NEVER command a Starship. Maybe a freighter, or other commercial vessel. Nudrek has written their Starfleet officers as Shitty assholes or incompetent officers like STD or SNF(feelings). Now is this last Picard maybe the best they've given. That is fine, but Please don't call it Star Trek. It is NOT! I know the Roddenberry would NOT want his name on STD, Picard, or SNF(feelings). Since all three are negative and depressing looks at the future of humanity. He wanted us to know things will work out.

I totally understand your point. I get the anger. I absolutely feel it too. But things can change. And when they do, we as fans have to point it out. If season 3 is THAT good. Then we all need to watch it to show the executives at Paramount the difference between seasons 2 and 3. Seasons 1 and 2 were abysmal, and the ratings reflect that. And conversely, if season 3 is great, we should make the ratings the best they can be. So that they (the Execs) have a clear line in the sand. Something that the woke activists CAN'T refute.

One of the reasons we've seen Star Trek devolve into characters throwing fits, being emotional and back talking and disrespecting the chain of command despite being a military organization is because of what Robert Burnett said earlier, the writers are people who lack real world experience outside of the schools they've attended and the bubbles they live in. They haven't served in the military, much less any actual wars, so they think a defense force like Starfleet is like high school and college where they were very rarely told no by their parents or teachers and they were encouraged to question and talk back. That type of attitude works in a college classroom, it doesnt work when enemy rounds are snapping by your head. So, they think the military and college are interchangeable and Starfleet officers would behave with superiors, the way they did with their college professors.

I’m sorry to say it, but one good season of a god awful series isn’t enough to change the fact that the established lore of Star Trek has been ruined, starting all the way back with Discovery leading into Picard, have we forgotten that Jean Luc Picard is actually dead? this isn’t even the real Picard in seasons 2 and 3….. only way i’d consider giving this a chance is if they make everything that happened in the previous seasons not canon.
@MikeTXBC
@MikeTXBC Жыл бұрын
I think it's telling that Picard is acting more like... well, Picard in Season 3 when the other TNG cast members are joining him. Maybe part of the character's problem was that he lacked the right crew and the right support. After all, a commanding officer is only as good as his crew, and he completely trusts the TNG crew. I realize this is all probably "head canon" since I doubt the writers were thinking about this when writing Seasons 1 and 2, but if we're looking for an in-universe explanation, maybe we could just say that until now Picard, as an old man who doesn't have the same vitality he did years ago, felt alone, vulnerable, and unsure of himself without the crew he spent years with and trusted with his life. And if that's the eventual in-universe explanation, I would love it because it's so damn human. People feel stronger surrounded by those they trust and can rely on, and it's true that we grow older, and our physical (and mental) capabilities lessen, we become more hesitant and less confident without sufficient support.

Geordi's daughter is a pilot who wrecked two shuttles, and everybody hates the Galaxy Class for some reason. Complimenting Picard Season 3's humor is like enjoying the "friendly roast" from someone who's been beating you up for half a decade. Just because they're being more subtle doesn't change the long history of reasons you have to doubt their intentions. Beverly in Season 3 is just a less atrocious Seven of Nine in Season 1. And we're all supposed to pretend that there is any validity whatsoever to claiming that Picard and Riker are the same kind of cowboys that Kirk was, not my idea of good writing. Just as Feige has to tell better stories to be more subtle about his activism, Secret Hideout is doing the same to be more subtle about their contempt. It's the same trash, just the light version (and sadly I don't mean that literally; the sets are still lit worse than a horror film).

@Anoneemus Noename I can tell you what happened. They (Drinker) started inviting Robert Meyer Burnett, someone who's actually worked on Star Trek before (producer, writer and editor.) He immediately started going on a tirade on why this new Picard season would have been the best thing since sliced bread, and that even he, who thought the franchise was ruined beyond hope, was ecstatic. That it was GREAT. The others (Drinker, Mauler, Gary) just stood there and looked around awkwardly while letting him do his little piece and being optimistic about it even after having said "Star Trek is dead" MANY times. After this, Drinker, Gary and Dave (Cullen, Computing Forever) received Early Access to the whole season from CBS/Paramount. Then, they started saying it's the BEST THING EVER and, if you said anything like "you're shilling" (when they are, de facto, shilling - they clearly signed a contract and some kind of partial NDA to have early access) they (and their community, of which I'm also part of) called you a retard, basically.

These overly neurotic, childish displays given by people who should have years of combat training really don't make sense when portraying Starfleet. Also why is Shaw so belligerent and distrustful of his own first officer? Doesn't that affect crew morale? It would, and any competent Starfleet commander would know that, but the crew are just a bunch of NPCs so I guess it doesn't matter. "No dear,Really, I mean it this time! I promise! I've changed!" Would that erase 10 years of violent Abuse? Hell No!!!! In this case kurtzman, bad reboot, and everyone associated with new dreck is the abuser. And we the audience are the abused spouse. I really think you should watch Doomcock's review of episode 1. Kurtzman's name is still all over this. If it succeeds, the idiots at Paramount will give him the credit and carte blanche to shit on Star Trek for another 10 years. And there are plenty of flaws in the logic of the plot. Like not having a remote override code for the shuttle that Picard and Riker steal. No, I am done with Trek. Absolutely. This is the first time since I discovered Drinker years back that I strongly disagree with his take here. This season appears to have, at most, the potential to return to the era of the Next Gen feature films which, while entertaining in their own ways, do not represent why I love Star Trek. For me, NuTrek continues to lack the following critical elements that make Star Trek so fascinating to me: (1) Engaging stories that pose moral dilemmas that make me wonder what I would do in those situations. (2) Strong adherence to in-universe logic, systems, and consistency... like the remote override code example you mention. (3) A rigid chain of command structure with, as another commenter so elequantly puts it, "professional under pressure" dialogue. (4) Smart dialogue that does not rely on the casual use of "colorful metaphors" to feign intensity. Also, f-bombs do NOT belong in Star Trek under any circumstance.

Age also brings experience and a greater understanding of consequences, hence the reason why older leaders appear more cautious. This isn't fear or uncertainty, instead, this is due to that experience and understanding of consequences causing them to think things through a bit further than someone who is younger with less experience. Simple example - we play the card game rummy and in order to win, you have to not just look for the obvious moves in your hand, but also plan through future hands - I saw Bob take this card and not play it yet so if I discard this other card, I could give Bob the ability to score points. We've got a younger player in the group who doesn't do that - he plays fast and for the moment, always failing to understand why he keeps feeding the older player cards and points with what he discards, all the while wondering why they never drop the cards he needs. That's age and experience causing us to play slower than youth and inexperience.

Well, it sounds like they've turned on the lights for the writer's room. Now, please turn on the lights on the bridge.

Sorry to Drinker and Robert, both of whom I respect, but after two episodes, this show is still pretty bad. I honestly don't understand how you can overlook the terrible writing. And they made a point of bringing back Rafi and making her a crucial part of the storyline. But she is just so terrible. The acting, the writing for her, it's just terrible.

This is to Star Trek what Mandalorian was to Star Wars. Not that good, but better than the other shit that came before. A breath of fresh air. You're right, the writing is bad and the dialogue is cringe. I mean they literally joke around during battle, which is something Drinker and crew all rightly criticized Marvel for doing. But when this show does it, they turn a blind eye. It's really strange.

The real question is, can season 3 be watched in isolation? 🤔
