I was born and raised in Port Glasgow ...it used to be a really busy shipbuilding town i remember going with my mum and brother every friday to wait at the shipyard for my dad coming out as were hundreds of other wives and children waiting for the" pay packet" of their men to go and pay the bills and get the shopping🤣... Donachies and the Comet I think are the only 2 pubs out of 5 that ats left in the town now ..its great to see

Watching all the old timers makes me feel sad for my old man who is now 88 himself and is an Irish immigrant living in NYC (qeens) since the 1960s. Our "local," which was a mixed Irish and Italian neighborhood, always had a bunch of old timers from the area in the pub having a few but over the years they've all passed away and my dad is basically the only one left so he no longer goes up to the pub anymore and just sits home. I wish he'd just go back to Ireland so he could be with his own peeps again. No Irish left in NYC.

@@LeahDyson-kq4bd Wow. Yes, I we used to go to Gaelic park years ago in the 80s. I think it's actually still open believe it or not. Probably one of the last few Irish things left in the Bronx. You still have some Irish left in Yonkers/Woodlawn. A lot of the bars on McClean ave would have some Irish old timers but even those would be mostly Hispanic Americans along with a few White Americans under 40. Even the Irish bars in Manhattan and Queens are closing left and right. Places like Woodside/Sunnyside. Nothing left. The immigration act of the late 1960s really killed off all European immigration to America. Where I grew up and still live in North Flushing, formerly Italian/Irish/Jewish, is almost now entirely foreign born Chinese. They seem to be the only ones with the money to buy these homes. Where it comes from, I have no clue.

This was excellent, really enjoyed it, very honest and up front. Refreshing to watch an English mans perspective on working class pubs in Scotland. Only thing I would recommend is more interaction with the locals, they don't bite, but not everybody is comfortable doing that. Look forward to watching more episodes. Not all working class pubs are across the street from broken windows, I agree with you on the pub with Caledonia Best, when you are less important to the barperson than her phone. Looking forward to the pubs you pick in the city 🤣 I've got some stories.

Get yourself to the ancient capital, Dunfermline. The Bruce tavern, just up from the abbey Robert the Bruce is buried in.. a few tasty old boozers knocking about there, along with the pittencrief park glen

They called themselves Port Glasgow to attract the ships to the town instead of further up the Clyde at Govan dock. Bit of a trick. There used to be a bit of a rivalry between the area and Glasgow before Glasgow became what it is now. The municipal building In Greenock was also built slightly higher than the one in Glasgow city centre as another kind of one up on them. Greenock in the 1800s was the wealthiest place on the Clyde due to the ships docking and the trade. In the end Glasgow won and were still paying off the tower we built to one up them 😂😂😂😂😂 Glad you finally made it up to my wee hometown. At one time it was a proud place to live. Full of working men and women. Shameful.

Fantastic. I love scabby pubs. You picked some good ones. I took a chance by choosing the roughest pub in Perth, daytime, wearing kilt and bonnet, English accent. Maybe stupid to do it, but I'm a professional piper out on a job up there. Hardened local drinkers, bloke serving looked like a wrestler, total class act. Yea, some were verging on hostile, but after sinking a few I got chatting to some guys at the bar, then it was fine. Great blokes, just like them, just like us.

Tennents lager is probably marginally better than mainstream 'lager' in English pubs. It's not a quality beer though. Coors on the other hand is total trash. Budweiser, Corona and Coors; dismal beers that they are in their home countries are brewed to an even lower standard for the UK market.

Great video, glad you're showing more of the inside of the pubs instead of being in the outside area because of copyright music. Can't believe you were almost served that pint in the Carnock bar until the regulars spoke up.

Love the black Cat and The Green Oak in Greenock. You should of tried a clear and a Beer when you were there.A half pint and a glass of Eldorado. Then you know you are in the Port 😂😂

I've heard excessive bubbles, like that beer in Donnachies, usually means a dirty glass, and that's probably why it was mediocre.
