In the future electric cars will be used to power the house during outages. We are trialing it in here in the UK as the price of the electricity on some electricity tariffs is variable depending on usage, i.e. time of day. Store the electricity when it is cheap and put it back when it is expensive. On one particular electricity tariff it has been known for the price of the electricity to be a negative value, i.e. when there is lots of sun and wind at the same time.

Electric cars won't work in SA (and many other countries) until they can become better. Currently the charging times are too long and range too short. For many people in SA, the car they have is the only car they have. The best selling cars are cars like a Picanto, i10, Polo Vivo, Etios, Sandero etc. All those cost less than R200k. No electric car costs so little. People use their Picantos and Vivos and Sanderos for long distance journeys. They use it to take kids to and from school and they use it to take spouse to and from work. They use it for their holidays and longer trips. An electric car costing R200k will have a range of next to nothing. Probably only 200kms at best. So for most of the population it simply won't work or be feasible because then you'd need a second car for everything else. Not everyone has garage parking. Imagine extension cords running out to yards and in complexes and stuff. Charging stations are not close enough together. An affordable electric car wouldn't even make it a quarter of the way to Durban from Joburg for example with people in it and luggage driving at 120kph. At those speeds the range of electric cars plummet whereas a combustion car is more efficient. People in SA also love to tow their trailers and caravans. There's some remote places too. Electric won't work there. Even if used once a year for long journeys, again, for most that one car is their only car. You can't now also pay to rent for an occasion when you do travel. Until an electric car can cost R200k, be charged in 5 mins and have a range of at least 600kms (like a Polo Vivo or Etios or Sandero or i10) on the highway, electric cars are simply not for South Africa and actually for the rest of the world. Not now. For now they will remain a niche product until the above can be met for true mass adoption. The saddest part is that carmakers are discontinuing investment in petrol and diesel vehicles in favour of electric. That means in the future, range and charging speeds become a privelage for those who can afford an expensive electric car versus now where cheap cars have more range and fill up at the same speed as an expensive one. Electric is not ready. And it is a shame that carmakers have to discontinue investment in petrol and diesel.

I really can't wait for the next breakthrough in battery technology. Imagine if you had batteries that are super thin and light but has a much bigger capacity, doesn't explode or catch on fire, charges quickly and has a long life. Everything will change again. From laptops and cell phones to vehicles and wearables. Realistically though, proper implementation of future tech like the solid-state battery is still a decade away. But I did see that the new Mi 10 Ultra can 120w fast charge. That is 50% battery charge in 12 mins because of graphene. Crazy stuff.

I understand the cost calculation confirming that electricity is much cheaper than petrol, but you need to take into account the price of the vehicle it self. Electric cars are way more expensive than the comparable petrol cars and more of the than not you can buy 4-5 years of petrol before breaking even(i3 for example). Until electric cars becomes cheaper in SA, it would not make sense owning one to save money.

Here in Canada I got $16K in gov subsidies... basically it was cheaper then the regular ICE golf
@TheGalantir
@TheGalantir 4 жыл бұрын
I got my e-golf in april of this year. Compared to my ICE car the golf saves me around 200 euro a month which is 2400 euro a year. I don't have to spend money on oil and since i use the regeneration feature quite a bit brakes are hardly used which again saves cost. You are right that the break even point is around 4-5 years but after that it quickly becomes way WAY cheaper than an ICE car. So your conclusion is incorrect. Most people who buy a new car drive it longer than 4 years, so for most people it is cheaper and you seem to disregard that group because you probably buy a new car every 1 or 2 years and even in that case it's still cheaper because you disregard the trade in value which is much more steady on EV's at the moment. This means you have lost more value when you trade in that first ICE car compared to that first EV. It's not a simple as you make it out to be in just taking the difference in price and seeing how much petrol you can buy for it. There's a lot more costs to a car than that and in the end you will always be cheaper with an EV. Yes they're expensive to buy but they're well worth the investment and even more if you have your house fitted with solar panels. Pretty much eery country has grants for EV's these days so in most countries it gets even cheaper.

@@Eric-lx8hp They don't offer subsidies in SA. Also, the electric golf has way less range than a diesel one. If the golf is someone's only car, they now can't take on long journeys and have to worry about charging all the time. Electric is not there yet.

We really can’t wait for the EVs to be adapted in SA. For those seemingly ignorant ones who say that Loadshedding will be an issue, just think for a bit. How often are you expected to charge this car? Definitely not everyday! You are also not loadshed for 24 hrs are you🤷🏽‍♂️. Surely that cannot be a problem in anyone who wants to own an EV. Loadshedding is merely just a silly (and probably an emotional) excuse to not adapting to EVs.

3 things that I would be thinking very hard about... 1. What is the duty-cycle/design lifespan of the battery packs in the vehicle - and when they wear out, how much does it cost to service/replace? How does that factor into the cost per KwH? 2. With Eskom being in the state it's currently in being barely able to provide power on a day-to-day basis, what's going to happen if there is suddenly a boom in the electric car industry? The strain on the grid would definitely collapse it. 3. Let's say your household has 1 car, it's an electric car. Let's say it's flat and requires recharging and you suddenly have an emergency - you're going to go where how? Bicycle? Walk? Hopes and prayers?

@@SuperMj70 @SuperMj70 Nvm i see where the misunderstanding lies. Over here street cred means street cred not show cred. Shows are something different. So you're not going to race it i presume. Because when you want to race it you have to rebuild the entire drive train since the default one is just not capable i know i own an e-golf. So you're better of getting the ICE version and just do a conversion, that way you can spend the price difference on converting it. If you're just going to use it at shows, there' no real point in getting the electric version and again you can spend the price difference on the car. So the only reason i can think of to do it in either case is because you just want to say it is an EV, that is quite a bit of extra money just to be able to say that for a car that would end up having no performance and range at all. But hey if that's your thing i'm all for it, don't get me wrong on that part. I just think it's an expensive way to go about it.

@@SDav21Like i said you are just out for an argument which is clear since charging rate does not depend on where you live but the given kw/h on the charger. IT also has nothing to do with owning one or more cars. And it even doesn't depend on you finding it an issue. So your comment was extremely pointless and the only reason to comment like that is to try to start an argument. If not explain what owning more cars has to do with charging rate. What has living anywhere have to do with charging rate? What has you finding it an issue have to do with charging rate?

IF they manage to bring it to market. Unfortunately they seem to have quite some issues and the car is quickly becoming the joke of the EV world unfortunately. @Fabian Schorer Yes because it's cheaper to do the needed updates when it's in their home country where they're built since they will not have all features and will still have software issues. At least this way the cars are going out since otherwise they would have to delay again which is why most people are upset in the first place who ordered one. Not sure they will be happy they will get one that has issues but that's what VW decided to do.

@kamogelolefifi5642
@kamogelolefifi5642 4 жыл бұрын
I was about to say they should have brought the iD, I am very interested in it. The issue with this golf is that it just a mere modification of a ICE golf so it’s underpinnings are that of an internal combustion engine vehicle, whereas the iD was designed from scratch as an electric vehicle, obviously making it more solid electric car than this golf
@TheGalantir
@TheGalantir 4 жыл бұрын
But this one is available and the ID3 isn't and not for quite a while because of the issues they have with getting it to work. Then even when it gets released it still won't have the different variants for quite a while sine they will only be producing the mid range version. So until all versions of the ID3 are actually available it doesn't really make sense to talk about it. Unfortunately because all of this the ID3 is quickly becoming the joke of EV's because of the huge amount of issues with it's launch. Saying a discounted product has no use in a market where the most stated problem is the cost of the cars is just ridiculous in my opinion. Not everyone has huge amounts of money to spend and for some people this is a very good car to enter the world of EV's built on a proven platform.

@@TheGalantir Golf 8 is launching on the 3rd quarter of 2020 and possibly reach our stores in March 2021. 2ndly people looking for EV are very specific in what to purchase. One of the things we EV enthusiasts look for is the internal space and two boots "frunk" and that is not even offering that. Even Mercedes EQC is highly criticised simply because it's a GLC. The review is brilliant for research purchases (not potential EV clients)
@TheGalantir
@TheGalantir 4 жыл бұрын
@Neo Moselane Basically what you are saying is that people who buy second hands cars don't count. and your way of thinking is the only way people should think. Seeing this e-golf is no longer being produced and hasn't been available in SA pretty much the only way to get it is second hand imports which in quite a few cases is much cheaper then buying a brand new ID3 which isn't even released and will have issues upon release with no ETA on when it will be fixed. Like i said before it will also not be available in it's cheapest edition for quite some time., which means for many many people the ID3 is not an option. I'm not saying not to show the ID3 but calling it a waste to show this one is disregarding more than 70% of the people who buy cars. Not every EV enthusiast is all about frunks like you are, you are projecting your own personal preference onto everyone. So yes this is eevn a good review for potential EV clients, just not EV clients like you.

There are efficiency losses when charging a battery. You need to check the power meter on your municipal supply and you will see it takes more than 35kW to charge a 35kW battery until it is full to 35kW capacity. Or, by charging it with a petrol generator will indicate the huge losses every time energy is converted from one form to the other. Fuel, coal to electricity and electricity into battery (chemical) potential.
