Scare the crap out of back seat drivers! Here's how:
Manual transmission
Step 1. Find your straight line through the rear window. Fix your eyes on a spot in the distance, this should keep you on course.
Step 2. Pop it into reverse and floor the throttle.
Step 3. At around 25-30mph take your foot off the accelerator. This doesn't need to be a pretty or smooth manoeuvre but it does need to be quick as the idea is to unbalance the rear suspension.
Step 4. With your hand on the steering wheel at seven to nine o'clock throw the steering wheel away to the right. This now unbalances the front end and the car will automatically fly straight round. If it's a good J-turn the rear wheels will stay virtually still as the front wheels spin around to the front.
Step 5. Look forward, clutch down and into first gear. Drive away.
How hard is that? For automatics the final step is even easier as you don't use the clutch.
Step 5. (Automatic) Look forward, change from reverse into drive and away you go.

Just word of caution if you don't do it properly you will either reverse into the curb or flip the car as most of us are probably gonna try this in a shitty hatchback. The yanking of the steering wheel is the key to a good J turn.

The proper term for the knob on the steering wheel is reffered to as a suicide knob, It was popularized in the 50s when cars didnt have power steering and it was harder to turn

With an automatic, you can switch from reverse to neutral without having to push the button on your gearshift, and you can also go from neutral to drive without having to push it either. So you could just pull your gearshift back from reverse to drive, but you may ruin your transmission.

Perfect J turn!!!! Finally someone on here that can actually drive and yes a J turn can be done just as easily if not easier with an automatic transmission. I've actually seen a secret service video where the instructor is showing a novice how to do a J turn in I-Rock Z w/ automatic transmission.

Beautiful. I executed one of these in my 2001 Ford Expedition. I managed to keep the rear wheels nearly in the same spot, however, if you're not experienced at these, don't try it in an SUV like I did. I'm not experienced, but I was willing to deal with the consequences of trying. If you don't do it right, you could very well flip the SUV.. Anyway, it was a fun experience. The Expedition with it's 5.4 16v V8 performed beautifully. :3

two questions second one is irrelevant to me if the first one is a no. 1. can this be done with a front wheel drive car? 2. can throwing an automatic into neutral be done in place of hitting the clutch?(as I understand it they should be functionally identical)

Can't argue with you there mate. That's why I did the first one without, personally I find a normal steering wheel easier. I'd never used a stunt knob before though so thought I'd add it in. Although if you're in a car with one, and doing multiples, you find yourself using it just to stop it whacking the hell out of your wrist.

Top question. Unfortunately I don't know the definitive answer to this as automatics are less common in the UK than in the US. I have used both auto/manual for J-turns however and never had a problem. Both techniques are described in the info text and links below the video. Hope that helps!

The stunt knob is sold here in the states as the lazy one handed palm a wheel or whatever it's called. It's actually sold as a driving aid for people who don't use both hands, no joke.

Hi! Nice video, and tutorial! When i was doing that trick i was going maybe 20kph or less, and i flicked the wheel but the car didnt spin around, it was just going backwards and turning normally, thats it. I should have done a serious jerk on the wheel or what? I am just a little worried, i dont want to flip my car over! Help me on this !
@ZombieCakeHD
@ZombieCakeHD 10 жыл бұрын
Try going faster than that haha. You need to be around 30 MPH, not sure what that is in KM but 60MPH is 100KPH, and you need to keep spinning the wheel, don't just flick it.

Do we have to apply brakes while performing the spin??
@FatGreenSheep
@FatGreenSheep 9 жыл бұрын
Applying brakes will help break traction with the front tires, getting it to swing farther
@42raven42
@42raven42 8 жыл бұрын
+coreofheart1 I have not tried this but I think that by tapping the brake (tap, not stomp and hold) that little change in momentum will transfer more weight/force onto the rear tires which means your front tires will have less weight holding them down onto the road, the front will rise slightly and help the front tires 'lose' their grip on the road so they can skid/slide around. Ever notice how your car's front dips down a little when you break hard? You are sort of doing the same thing only in reverse.

I was curious, because I read up on the maneuver. I have a FWD automatic with select shift and my friend said not to perform this or else it will destroy my suspension. Thoughts? Thank you for your time.
@FrankColesMadeEasy
@FrankColesMadeEasy 10 жыл бұрын
Hi mjm, Any car you use for stunt driving of any kind is going to face challenges it may not have been designed for. So whatever tricks you decide to do in your car will have an affect on it. The first things to go are usually the tires - you go through a lot of them! Suspension, brakes, steering, axle, you name it. All will get hurt depending on how much you hammer it and the stress levels of each individual car. Most people buy a cheap second car they don't mind trashing for this type of practice. You can certainly j-turn a FWD auto, the first one I ever did was in one of these but it was specially maintained for the job. I hope that helps.
@ZombieCakeHD
@ZombieCakeHD 10 жыл бұрын
You certainly can do it. You're ties well go first. I have an Acura TL 3.2 FWD, get it to speed in reverse, then kick it in neutral, flick the wheel, once you're almost straight, you can pop it in drive and give it gas to keep moving. You'll know you're turn around all the way, you'll feel it so be sure to go into drive a little early

I tried it with a Ford Crown Victoria. It did not go very well. Can this be done with a rear wheel drive vehicle? It almost does it but it seems like the front wheels get dragged by the rear wheels even at full turn so it does not turn in reverse as quickly.

Try pressing the brakes harder (but don't lock it up), maybe that'll help pivot on the rear wheels.

I don't know anything about cars... but while going fast in reverse & throwing it back into 1st or any gear, wouldn't that damage the motor or transmission? I'm quite serious & am very curious about this & would appreciate a response. Thank you! ~ Peace
@JHsadler
@JHsadler 9 жыл бұрын
No because you're using the clutch. The tyres will spin before you break the clutch.

@pkwithblades7565
@pkwithblades7565 9 жыл бұрын
You only put it into first after you're already done with the slide. What would actually damage the transmission is leaving it in reverse because you would then be traveling forwards but still be in reverse gear. To make this all a lot easier, you just put in the clutch as soon as you start the slide so that once you're out of it, your car won't be in reverse and you can just put it in first then drive off.
