I first drove the Ford Everest when the facelifted first generation arrived in South Africa in 2009. I never spent any time in the second generation when it hit our shores, so getting into this next gen Everest really is like chalk and cheese...
Its certainly a head turner and like we've seen with cars like the Defender, Discovery and Toureg, with the push to plush and that R1million plus price tag, all they are likely to summit is a curb in suburbia. Seems such a waste of capability...

Interesting review Marius, first I’ve watched from you. I’m in Aus out in the desert and have the grey sport coming, was suppose to be this week but I believe has been delayed as it’s apparently still on a boat. However, I was able to take the dealer demo for a test drive, my partner and so also found the motor a little underwhelming although I believe it’s to do with the gearbox. My mother previously had a Territory which has per the comments you would know previously used the same engine in a 2.7 Litre format. She really loved the power and torque that had and since moving to a 2016 Isuzu has definitely missed the motor of the Territory. Being out in Desert far north west NSW we will definitely be putting this to the test off-road. Coming from a 96 GQ Patrol before my current DMAX I’m looking forward to going back to coils all round. Obviously I think everyone would take a 300 series if they could but at double the cost and with orders closed it’s just not an option out here, so I really think Ford has introduced a decent competitor for the Landcruiser even if many hate to admit that.

Hey Josh thanks for the comments! Worked for a local motoring channel as their anchor presenter for over 12 years reviewing cars - left them in 2020 to dedicate more time to my own production company requirements so sadly I don't get to review cars as often as I would like! Need to make the time for sure as its something I am passionate about and enjoy. Given your location you are 100% the target market for body on frame vehicles with off road capabilities - you are buying based on needs - wish more consumers would do that! Given the Isuzu you were in, you are certainly going to appreciate the ramp up in comfort and like you so rightly said, the ride quality having coils to cushion your ride. The engine gearbox pairing works really for me - super smooth - it may lack that initial lowdown punch but I like uniformly the power is delivered. Its a heavy car - plenty of tech and safety - so that will also have an impact on the punch. The delays are annoying though - I hate it when manufacturers launch to market when they actually cant provide stock to the market! Its a sneaky trick too as here in SA they want a securing deposit but you cant pay the full amount up front as they don't want to commit to that price. Its ridiculous...a dealer mate of mine actually takes the money and puts it in an interest bearing account for the customer so that he doesn't lose out on that interest. Hope you are happy when she finally arrives...let me know your thoughts after you've spent some time with her. Thanks Marius

Love this in-depth review - what is the pricing like on the Everest Platinum in South Africa? I live in Australia and have a friend who recently purchased one of these in Sedona Orange.... he also got the extra cost off-road package which then brought it up to just on A$91,000
@MariusRobertsProductions
@MariusRobertsProductions Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Joe - glad you enjoyed it! There is a full spec and price board towards the end of the review. Platinum is priced at R1.15m (divide by 12 to convert to Aus dollars) and both models come standard with full off-road capabilities - we don't have an option - which is a little ridiculous considering the Platinum comes standard on 21" highway terrain tyres!!! You can opt for the 18" wheel with offroad rubber.

@xolanimtimkulu4309 Жыл бұрын
I'm struggling to understand why people are complaining about the pricing though, vehicles like the Hyundai Palisade are over a million rands as well. In terms of bakkie based competitors the aging Toyota Fortuner VX 4x4 is also above R900k on dealership floors and this Platinum offers far more opulence and tech
@MariusRobertsProductions
@MariusRobertsProductions Жыл бұрын
Car prices in general are out of control and the biggest culprits are bakkies - completely overpriced if you consider how seldom most owners actually use the load area. Now that these ‘workhorses’ are being pushed to premium only drives the prices up more! So like I said in my review, I would much rather buy a built from the ground up premium SUV than a re-engineered bakkie - the drive quality will never be as good! The only benefit the Everest would have is it’s rugged ability but would you really go bundu bashing in your 20” million plus premium ride? No you wouldn’t - that’s the same issue I have with the new Defender - trying to make a car that can be all and do all. The Palisade is bigger, the 3rd row you can actually use and it also gives you an 8th seat option AND the ride and drive quality is a lot better because it’s on a unibody!

It’s new for Ford in their lineup - wasn’t aware that’s where the engine came from, will certainly check up on that! The big win would have been VW’s engine - that is so good! Here in SA there have been issues with their bi-turbo - the turbo itself & not sufficient cooling - that’s the first thing the aftermarket guys change
@mazdar100

@@MariusRobertsProductions Ford made the V6 in the Land Rover. It was based on the 2.7 in the Discovery 3 and the Territory (that's what we called it in Australia). They did have different issue, however. 2.7 has issues with the water pump and other things and the 3.0 added a turbo and torque so other things failed.

Many cars have driver door handle release that operate even though the doors are locked. My '99 Land Rover Discovery Series II did this too.
@MariusRobertsProductions
@MariusRobertsProductions Жыл бұрын
I know many cars have this feature but none of the ones I have driven are a one pull to open if the door is locked! The lever either pushes past its default position to denote it’s locked - pulling it back to normal unlocks, the next pull opens OR you have to pull the lever twice - once to unlock then to open. There is no way with a door locked that you should be able to open on one pull!
@tempestv8
@tempestv8 Жыл бұрын
@@MariusRobertsProductions Yes, I think you make a valid point. On my Land Rover Discovery Series II, if the driver's door is locked, the first pull of the door release handle does NOT open the door, it just unlocks the door, and the second pull is the one where the door actually opens.

Living in Aus couldn’t agree more about our ridiculous safety standards! Question. How did you find the head room in the Platinum? I sat in a sport model and was concerned how much headroom was taken up by the roof air con ducting. I’m only 186 cm, my teenage boys are the same and all of us hit our heads if we tried the middle seat. Sides aren’t bad but we all noticed the head room was reduced.
@MariusRobertsProductions

I am 1.83m and had no headroom issues in the 2nd row but the middle seat does sit you up higher as its almost bench like so that would definitely be tight for you guys! Obviously the 3rd row is a no go at all for any adults…it really is an occasional 7 seater. It’s an interesting point you raise though as you really don’t expect a headroom issue in a vehicle like this hey It’s a good point you raise re. head room

Thanks Rizaan… Look, their while ‘taking on Discovery’ message is purely to help ease the pricing. So rather remove the all terrain nonsense, have a basic AWD system and reduce the price OR just buy an SUV designed to do that from the start. Bizarre

As good as this is, it is unfortunate that Ford SA has decided not to offer crossovers as well. I understand that the Fiesta and Focus were dying off anyway due to low sales, but surely the fact the EcoSport sells well given the age is enough of an incentive for Ford to bring the Puma and Escape to our market? The reason why Toyota sells so well other than their reputation is because they have something for everyone.

Awesome review Marius thank you. I have a Platinum in the same "Aluminum Silver" colour you're reviewing on order her in OZ, wasn't really many great colour's to choose from, been told around January, February 2023 delivery, ordered June 2022. On road I'll be paying $90,000 AUD different state by state for on road costs, registrations & having to pay a crappy Luxury car tax above a certain threshold, so our costs go up dramatically on purchase. In Australia they want the new Everest to be the Toyota Prado killer on & off road. I also loved "We know how anal the Australian's are" 🤣🤣priceless.

It’s good to know we aren’t the only country waiting for stock - Feb 23 is expected first models to arrive too. I must admit I preferred the colour options on the Sport - not sure in Australia but here in SA the black wheels, black lettering is only available on Sport and not Platinum and I think that’s a big mistake! For curb value, that’s going to stand out more than the grey brush finish on the Platinum. Our government also charged tax on tax with imported cars - such idiots - and with service / maintenance plans sold separately, that price is going to go up a little more! Thanks for watching and for the comments 😊

@@MariusRobertsProductions Totally agree with the colour options from the sport & Platinum & yes, it's the same here in Australia regarding the wheels & black lettering for the Sport only. It will also be my very first Diesel as I've never really been a fan of them for one reason or another, expensive servicing was one of them & I am also unsure about the "add blue" that many diesels now have? How was the noise inside of the cabin with the one you reviewed as I haven't yet been able to test drive from my local dealership as yet. Cheers
@MariusRobertsProductions
@MariusRobertsProductions Жыл бұрын
@@Spartan-mt9lv I think in these applications, diesels are the way to go, especially given the crazy fuel prices! How I wish that wasn’t the case though… There was a time when the petrol vs diesel model choice debate was a hot topic - then the diesels always cost more and the fuel saving over the petrol didn’t justify the price! And you right, services were expensive…but they have come a long way since then, especially in terms of noise and refinement! With regards the AddBlue, I only know of that with the trucks where it’s added every so many refuels so you need a station that sells it or you have it with you but it’s not something that is a concern on the leisure diesel vehicles - if they do have an AdBlue tank it’ll get refilled at service. Is rather funny though given it’s distilled water and urea, this whole push to reduce certain fertilisers (which contain urea) in farming, you may have to pee in your tank in future 🤣

Hey Luke thank you so much for taking the time to comment on a review that you never watched...perhaps the time spent drafting your thoughts would have been better spent watching mine. "Clearly Ford is going for the Prado market in Australia..." is hardly an opinion but rather the comments of someone well versed in the global Ford Everest narrative and the 'cut and paste' press release reviews out there. (of which there are plenty.) Discussions on the merits of body on frame versus unibody especially with Ford's push to premium and improved ride quality, the upmarket repositioning which will see the off-road capabilities very seldom being used (reinforced by Ford's standard large rim size and Highway Terrain tyre) etc. I get may very well be a little too higher grade for some, but that's the type of review 15 years in the business will bring you. State of our non-existent, pothole invested road infrastructure Body-on-Frame is a necessity anyway. Forget unibody. BTW you're much more insulated from road imperfections with a body-on-frame vehicle and they outsell other SUV 's 10/1 worldwide 🌐 I have a LC300 and it's EPIC !
@MariusRobertsProductions
@MariusRobertsProductions Жыл бұрын
Potholes smash your wheels and rims irrespective of whether you are ladder framing or in a unibody so that doesn’t fly. Go back to why body on frames were made, with their leaf springs = work horses, carrying load. So unless that’s what you using it for, there is no ways you can even compare the drive quality between the two. And that’s why I made the point that people don’t buy based on needs - just look at the number of bakkies / bakkies cum SUV’s doing the school run / daily commutes and very little else. So why compromise on ride quality to have capabilities most never use?!?! It honestly makes zero sense to me…the new Cruiser has gone the same route - amazing cars that have gone uptown and now you seldom see them leaving the concrete jungle. My mate swears by them and the older ones are all we drive on the farm…he definitely isn’t taking his new one off the beaten track though!
