2023 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro Takes The Family Anywhere

An all-new Sequoia doesn’t come around all that often. The third generation has a few surprises. For starters, it packs a hybrid powertrain with a 10-speed transmission. And the TRD Pro model gets forged-aluminum wheels wearing 33-inch all- terrain tires, extra underbody protection and an off-road tuned suspension with Fox internal bypass coil-overs. And in Solar Octane paint, it will show up all traffic cones everywhere. Tom Voelk takes the TRD Pro on pavement and off-road to see if it can live in both worlds.

This is why I love your reviews Tom. Honest and pragmatic. I love how you kept mentioning that all of its faults are OK if you’re actually going to use it for what it’s built for. Tom, Your review was very balanced so the only thing I will add is that Toyota USA had to agree to some design compromises to have a new generation of Sequoia approved by head office in Japan. We both remember when the vast majority of people who drove hulking 4X4s actually needed them for work. Driving a 3 ton vehicle for suburban commuting makes as much sense to me as wearing construction boots for a day's shopping at the local mega mall. 🤨In terms of Land Cruiser's future in North America, there is widespread speculation from credible sources that one Land Cruiser variant will be coming back by the end of the year to help feed the insatiable appetite for 4X4s. Hopefully Toyota sends you an invitation for a test drive. 😉

Design compromise? That's a thing when a vehicle uses many of the same body panels to save money. This seat design here gets in the way of what the truck is used for. And yes, I've heard those rumors but right now they're just that.

Great and insightful review! Killer looks, but everything rearward behind the driver's seat seems to be a disaster. The MSRP of my '02 Sequoia Limited 4x4 when new was $40k. Is the new one worth it for double the price? Maybe I need to adjust my mental evaluation to modern times. A lot has changed in 20 years.

Great review Tom! Evil twin on vacation in Hawaii? I think for my hard earned cash I would be going with the Tahoe. Perhaps the Diesel one. I think the Toyota looks better, but the Chevy has better interior features and more space. That sliding center console is the perfect solution for my wife’s purse, which is often in the way of someone.

18 mpg for a rig that weights that much is not surprising. Could be worse and typically is when it comes to trucks this large. I do like this design, looks the part of a tough 4WD SUV, but I just can't warm up to Toyota products. I owned one, have driven many, but I always come away with the sense that they are just too dull dynamically, esthetically, everything-ly. Most of them are just loaded up with cheap plastics and leather that feels like cheap plastic or design details that are not just well executed. Reliability seems to be their mantra, and they are good at that and that is the core of their success. The Yaris GR would be my pick if they just offered it here in the states and the Corolla GR don't make up for it. Still, this is a great review and very informative. You deserve a larger audience!

Yeah they fell behind because they let the previous generations of these vehicle slips years and years behind the competition. All they did here is barely catch up. Seems to be a running theme at Toyota.

@@MercOne Exactly. By going so long between generations, Toyota needs to hit a home run in order to stay competitive with other makers who refresh/update every 2 to 3 years. The tundra and sequoia are already about a half a generation behind the big 3 and in a couple of years will look ancient. Toyota has already traded on the myth of milion mile vehicles, but the so called longevity and reliability delta is quickly fading.

@@Sheng614 not always that much. In my area it’s 1.25x. But the EPA rates the Tahoe diesel at 26hwy mpg. Quite a bit more than the Toyota. ‘Course you have to put up with having a diesel.

I like Toyota's reliability, but I don't understand why they make it so uncomfortable. For example, I have a 4Runner and Highlander 2022, but the third row of seats is not removable, but foldable.
