Great ride! Thank you. As an ex-Melbournite I hadn’t realised how much of that route was now elevated; nor did I appreciate the benefits of liberating all that public land, under the structures - aside from eliminating level crossings, of course … Good stuff. A new source of binge viewing!

Skyrail and the level crossing removals was a wasted opportunity to not add either a 3rd or 4th track.

not much space around Hughesdale to Carnegie section due to apartment buildings and houses too close to the track, so I don't think adding 3rd or 4th track would do much as that section would be a bottleneck. (unless we bulldoze them all!) and don't forget, V/Line services and freight also use these tracks. They could possibly build a new viaduct with 2 tracks to act as a bypass (for express services, V/Line, and freight) from Caulfield via Dandenong Road but not sure where you'd tie it back into the line.

I was impressed by the frequency of trains on the “up side” to Dandenong/Pakenham but saw few people on platforms waiting. Where were they all?

It is a heavily used line. They just knew my camera was coming 🤣🤣🤣👍😀

That was an interesting ride, I lived in Springvale in the 1950's and travelled to Oakleigh to school. That platform you passed through was an island platform back then. What is your speed limit on "Sky Rail"" ?

Glad you enjoyed it 👍 The speed limit on the sky rail is 80kph but for locomotive hauled trains like this one, it is 70kph.

We need to do what Japan does and put windows through the back of the cab so you can see straight forwards as a passenger

Why do they have home signals instead of automatic signals when there are no points which need to be protected?

It's the new way. They prefer home signals everywhere now as it cuts down the chance of a mistake and a collision. 👍😊

I suspect that for some narrower sections of the railway reserve the only way they could quad the Dandenong line without demolishing hundreds of buildings would be to stack the rails on top of each other, which would be incredible expensive and given the total height probably also very unpopular with the locals.

Had some of the stations had at least 3 tracks, then at least V/Line services could've overtaken stopping trains. Not to mention that Metro would be able to run express services for their longer-distance services from Pakenham and Cranbourne. Obviously dedicated express tracks the whole way would be even better, but that seems too much to hope for now.
