As an older fella, here is one of my best pieces of advice- The skin is actually the largest organ in the human body and absorbs tons of nasty things in your lifetime. This is the reason that topical cremes, skin cremes, arthritis pain cremes, etc., etc. work so well. They are easily absorbed by the body through the skin. Wear gloves for everything! Brake fluid, motor oil, transmission fluid and radiator fluid are highly toxic (like poison). Also your lungs are your air filter for your body. They are not easily replaced. Wear a mask, wear a mask, wear a mask! From ANYTHING in a spray can to stains, household cleaners, etc. You will give yourself a much happier life.

I'm a diesel mechanic and can tell you now that your wasting your money trying to clean the valve with that stuff....!!! The only way to clean correctly is to remove the valve and clean it by hand , soak it in paraffin overnight and then dry it off and then get a tin of spray on oven cleaner and thoroughly coat the valve , leave it to work in for a couple of hours and then get a toothbrush and give it a good scrub and it will look like new.....👍

Thanks for the tip lads, I tried this but it didn't work well at all. I had to take the valve off and soak it in petrol and scrub it. But I shot that stuff into it after cleaning and it's working like new again. Cheers lads.

On my car (Volkswagen 1.4TDi) the engine oil breather is placed on top of the engine. Oil vapour blowing out during process but get to clean the intercooler, EGR and throttle body. Easy access.

@@fortitudevalance8424 Most vehicles have a small passage casted into the intake manifold that connects the throttle body to the egr valve that gets clogged and requires direct physical access to clean it out. A crankcase breather on top of the valve cover would not help give access.

I have a Toyota 3rd gen Prius and it's Impossible to remove the EGR valve only. What worked was using an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back and I had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Used a Torx E8 socket for the two Bolts ( in the back of EGR cooler) and we finally freed the EGR assembly. Now I can clean the valve and EGR cooler easily. Good video

In your opinion can you avoid cleaning the EGR if you run Chevron or Shell gasoline and only and use Valvoline Clean and Protect engine oil. Both of these do well cleaning/preventing carbon buildup.

Two things. One, as soon as you get your intake reassembled, go for a drive, it's best to do a decent 15 minutes at highway speeds to burn up any of the EGR cleaning fluid that's left as residue. Two, those cleaning sprays work best preventively. That means if you want your diesel engine to last for ages, start doing this every 20 to 30 thousand km from new. If you've bought a second hand diesel, pay to have the intake and EGR valve cleaned, then use this spray to keep it from clogging back up. Or don't, it's your car. I would hve also cleaned the MAP sensor.

Good advice. Prior to using the spray the engine management light was lit on the dash. After spraying and reassembly it was driven and the light went out. We eventually removed the egr valve and cleaned it. See link below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fonUe2OPmLSkhas

Yet its biproduct leaves a black chalk like substance called carbon you used a products biproduct am just wondering if you thought about that

Been having troubles with my 1.3cdti Vauxhall Meriva of late... laggy turbo, sometimes not boosting at all. Looking into using this style of EGR cleaning (as a recent repair meant I saw a very clogged and grotty EGR system) as well as the turbo cleaner as they seem to be the best tries before drastic action is needed. I do not know anything about Diesel engines. I have very small amount of amateur knowledge on gasoline engine. Silly question: from this video, it appears the spray is introduced at the turbo’s fresh air intake. This means the spray would travel through turbo, gets with compressed fresh air, thru inter cooler, into the fresh sore intake valves on the engine’s intake manifold, and into the cylinders to get burnt. On its way out, when already as soot and CO2, some of it (no more spray) might get into the EGR valve when the valve actuated. In other words, probably less than 1% of the spray would get onto the gunk at the EGR valve? Am I not understanding something correctly?

The turbo function is forced induction. A % of the egr cleaner spray would not pass through the egr valve though some may. To say you know nothing of diesel engines then to say probably less than 1% would is quite a strange statement. We cannot say for certain what percentage does get to the EGR valve but we can say for certain that it does indeed work when applied with this car

Driveway Dudes Thank you for your reply, although it is not answering the root of my question. I understand turbo charger is compressing air; that part is same as in a turbocharged gasoline engine. The difference is Diesel engine must have one, whereas gasoline engine could work naturally aspirated. My question is: the post-turbo air need to enter the cylinder first, get combusted (so the cleaner is now mostly burned up, becomes CO2 and H2O and whatever other incomplete combustion compounds), go out the exhaust valve into the exhaust manifold. At this point, there is very little “cleaner” left; most if not all should have being burnt. Now: the EGR isn’t always on. I don’t know what % of time an EGR valve would be on. But when the EGR is on, then a fraction of the exhaust gas gets recirc’ed. So we’re talking about fraction (after burning) of fraction (if EGR is on) of fraction (not all exhaust gas is recirc’ed even if EGR is on) of the cleaner spray would route through the EGR valve. And we haven’t even got started on exhaust temperature being higher, so any lucky residual cleaner should be in gas phase not liquid phase, and doesn’t “clean” as well when in gas phase... So back to my question: this method of cleaning EGR doesn’t seem to make sense. Am I missing something here? Or is there some keyboard hero who self-appoints as driveway/car expert can help enlighten us all?

Hi K, Good on ya. No better way to learn than to try it for yourself. Sometimes DIY can stand for Destroy It Yourself but not so in this video. You will not damage anything as long as you do not spray any sensors i.e. Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor being very sensitive. If after using the can of EGR valve cleaner the EGR valve is still choked up then it would have just cost you the price of a can to find out. Will this cause my engine to overheat, which then kicks in my high fan to cool? I just did thermo housing, water pipe and turbo coolant aux pump, no leaks anymore YET IT NOW OVERHEATS 😮 and I have a fault code p2418 EVAP… so I’m not sure if it’s this EGR or my EVAP???? Please help me!!!!!!

Code P2418 is for EVAP and not EGR. Hint, EVAP is short for evaporation and would be fuel related as opposed to EGR exhaust gas recirculation. Try trouble-shooting and below may help correct this error: Faulty wiring repair or replacement. EVAP pressure sensor repair or replacement. Fuel cap replacement. Faulty EVAP valves replacement. EVAP pump circuit and connections corrections. Purge solenoid replacement. Hope this helps

I've done this job on my C4GP. I used the Wynns EGR valve cleaner which is about a tenner from Halfords in the UK. With the Wynns you have to use the entire can. I sprayed mine just after the air filter because the Wynns won't harm the MAF or the turbo (my C4GP has the 2.0 HDi engine). I let the car idle and gave it 1 second bursts of spray. The engine note will change and as soon as it recovers give it the next spray and repeat until the can has been used up.

That's daft, unless you're driving a very old car. The EGR in most modern vehicles won't open unless the engine is under load (revs above 2000). This is because generally engine temps will be relatively low and the risk of valve clatter is minimal. In diesels this is especially true as Diesel engines run colder at idle than petrol ones. I find it pretty unlikely that your issue was the EGR. It's possible that it may have been the throttle body and you were just lucky enough to have managed to free up the valve without having to rev it.

The EGR gasses come from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve, back to the intake manifold, into the engine. Remember "EXHAUST Gas Recirculation".

Fail to understand how this method will help to clean an EGR valve after the cleaner has passed thro the engine , burnt, passed thro catalytic converter, and a small % of those fumes will be routed thro EGR valve , and clean it...!! EGR cleaner is a flamable fluid. So if you can spray into the turbo intake, the highest part of the cleaner fluid will burn in the cylinders. Maybe a little can go out to the exhaust system, but the huge part of them will go into the catalysator, and not into the EGR tube. And i think, that very small burned cleaning fluid will not remove that lots of carbon dust from the EGR valve.

It worked for us and we believe for many more people that have used it. We didn't manufacture it nor can we say how much will be burned in the cylinders or how much will recirculate. We made a video to see how effective it was. We followed manufacturers directions of this brand and the result was in our opinion that it did indeed do what it was designed and marketed for. Our EML was on before we started and afterwards it was not. If just a tiny percentage got through then apparently it was enough to make a difference.

Absolutely! Then consider that only a small percentage of the exhaust fumes get fed back to the egr. Anyone who has ever cleaned an egr valve after stripping it knows how much effort it takes to scrub it clean. There are no short cuts. Strip and scrub! You may want to look inside your inlet manifold while you're busy because i just finished removing about 350 gr of gunk with oven cleaner. Enjoy!

Sorry, but that is not how you clean an EGR system on a diesel engine. Ask yourself where is all the fouling going? There are no short cuts as you really have to pull the EGR system a part for cleaning. There is a chemical reaction that happens to the fouling or carbon. It goes rock hard and if you do this it becomes a nightmare to clean the system after you do this. There are no short cuts in life. At least on cleaning EGR systems on diesel engines. I know, I am in the trade in Australia. Diesel fitter.

In case of your car, it is petrol car with no turbo I guess. I that case, the inlet manifold of petrol car does not get much dirty.

I had the problem a couple of months ago when engine running when very lumpy and yellow engine management light came on. I gapped plugs, changed coil-pack but no good. I later replaced spark plugs but though running a little better, that was not full answer. I cleaned PCV which seemed to be working OK then reoved air-hose and squirted cleaner into air-intake. Within a couple of squirts, engine came back to running normally. For good measure, I fitted new air-filter as this was noticeably nearly black and likely overdue. Finally, yellow engine management light went out without having to cancel anything and everything still works just fine having passed annual technical test with no problem! The JLM instructional video (today at least that I checked) is saying to not spray it on the turbo as other people are saying, but to the inlet and not on the mass air flow sensor (MAF). On good trick on this car would be to remove the MAP sensor and spray to the hole.

Hi ktopoglidis, Thanks for the comment. Instructions and directions released by different brands are usually generalised and not model specific. It is possible to spray directly through the turbo provided it's not hot. The spray canister being highly pressurised would be very cold and spraying it into a hot turbo could possibly cause micro fracturing of the vanes. If as you suggested that removing the MAF and spraying in that way, we would reckon the majority of the spray would hit the inside of the pipe before a very little would eventually find it's way to the EGR valve

indeed they are not model specific the instructions from the manufacturers, but they do say in their video to do not spray in the turbo. There are several reasons, but I don't go into that. For many european models (Citroen, Mazda, Peugeot, Volvo, Mini and possibly more) the engine is the same (or similar). So taking one bolt that keeps the MAP is as easy as taking out the intake pipe. I will agree that you may have issues of hitting the pipe and run down a bit, but still might be better option. Usually injector cleaner is added to fuel in tank. It's not uncommon for the T5 and 5.1 to have egr issues. You can try cleaning it yourself or removing the egr to clean it. That way you can give it a thorough clean whilst checking the vacuum actuator and connecting pipes and hoses. If the van is not too old then in some cases as a gesture of 'Good Will' VW will replace the egr free of charge but you may have to pay labour costs

Hi Lio, P0401 is a generic code. The OBD detected an insufficient exhaust gas recirculation flow. There are 3 parts to the EGR - 1. EGR valve. 2. Actuator solenoid. 3. Differential pressure sensor egr (DPFE). I see you mentioned the first 2. Have you checked number 3 on the list? Have you reset the trouble code/s with the necessary equipment as with some vehicles this may be necessary. You may get build up in the EGR pipe/tube so spraying is an option and in some cases a solution. If the car is acting/driving normal then it may be just a case of a code reset.

On a Ford, if you get codes about EGR Pos. Sensors, replace the charcoal canister purge valve if it has one. If you get codes about Ox.sensor running rich, replace the MAP sensor.

EGR spray cleaner for gasoline cars isn't available in the United States. What sort of substitute cleaner can I use? Does the product you are using feel very oily if you rub it in between your fingers? Does it evaporate quickly? Does it have the smell of acetone? I've read that adding 2 oz. of automatic transmission fluid per gallon of gas will clean the EGR valve, since it doesn't burn completely and the vapor works its way into the exhaust.

Hi MRTIBURONTIBURON, Is the car running fine when the light is on? Have you had it on a diagnostic scanner? If so, did you have the system reset? Have you had any parts replaced? Some aftermarket parts can cause this. Did you do the "disconnect battery for 15 minutes" simple reset? On that car the most common issues that throw up check engine light would be the o2 sensors. Removal and a thorough clean, apply an electrical contact solution and replacing has in some cases rectified this. Others include mass air flow sensor, faulty gas cap, egr, faulty or damaged wiring (open circuit, shorting, grounding), cracked/gasket leak at header and then there's the cat

Everybody wonders when I drive a round because of smoke. Can thing be solved by cleaning the EGR Valve, Inlet Manifold and Inlet Valves using the EGR cleaner?

It's probably the cheapest first step to try. If it works then you've solved it. If not, then you have gotten one step closer to finding the issue by ruling that out

Having taken my EGR valve out to clean it, I find it hard to believe a bit of spray will get an EGR restricted with gunk clean. I scraped gunk off my EGR and soaked it in white spirit. When I put it back there was an increase in power. Also is it a good idea to have the at least two desert spoons of gunk that were in my EGR to be sucked into the engine?

The chemical composition of the EGR cleaning spray is such that it is capable of breaking down the deposits, ignites with the air fuel mixture and is expelled through the exhaust. Is Gunk ignitible ? If not then be careful as fluids do not compress well and could possibly harm your engine. In the very near future we will be making an engine cleaning video, We may use a car or a motorbike, e.g. one of our cars or maybe a Px Arcobaleno that is to be restored.

Did it work then? Did it fix the engine light coming on with the EGR fault code? I reckon you'd have a very slim chance of a spray into the intake actually removing enough carbon to resolve the engine light.

Yes, it worked. It temporarily cleaned enough for the warning light to go out for a few weeks. Eventually the egr valve was replaced.

Not all petrol engines have egr valves. If yours does and you spray cleaned it then possibly expect a small amount of smoke initially as its recirculating and burning off. Hope this helps

Hi guys, my wife’s C4 GP 1.6 hdi is showing an engine management light and an ‘anti pollution faulty’ message. The car is driving ok up to 80 kph /50 mph but after that it can slow down going up hill, can hold back in traffic or even stall when going around a corner. Is it worth trying this treatment or is it altogether more serious? I’ve also thought about changing the fuel filter and air filter but then I’m stuck for ideas after that. Thanks for the great videos, they’re really inspirational.

Hi robru, It could be a partially clogged EGR valve or it could be a clogged DPF. If the fuel filter was bad, the car may have starting and acceleration issues at all speeds including stalling as well as pushing out excessive exhaust smoke. Cleaning the EGR valve with the spray would be the first and least expensive step in a process of elimination. Hope this helps.

Nothing added to the fuel tank will have any effect on the EGR. It needs to be though the air intake system.

Got a 2.0 HDi Peugeot Expert. Starts fine (cept when very cold) and drives well but sometimes as I come to brake on an upward incline the engine stalls. It happens at one particular road almost all the time. Rest of the time fine. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi V T, Very cold/freezing weather can affect the performance of the battery and heater plugs. It can also affect the viscosity of oils including diesel especially if the engine has not been started for several hours. Does it stall as you're braking or when you try to accelerate after braking and is the engine still cold when this happens? Are there any warning lights on the dash prior or after? What's the mileage on it? When was it serviced last? Have you had a diagnostics scan carried out? Did you try cleaning the egr valve as shown in our video?

I service it myself. Oil and filters all changed regularly. Changed fuel filter recently. No warning lights and nothing on code scanner. 100k on the clock. It stalls as I brake and come to a stop. The engine has been running for 20 minutes at least so not cold as such. I'll try the EGR cleaning and see if that helps. If it stops raining! Cheers.

I bought it 14months ago and it has 58000. is it worth doing this to my car, it seems to be running fine. Just had a major service on it yesterday by a Peugeot garage! I also only use Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate, alternating between each fill up.

Hi Paul, You must mean a turbo cartridge. Is it OEM or aftermarket? Is your friend a turbo specialist? It may look the same but there are several different genuine Garrett turbo cartridges for the Berlingo as there are aftermarket ones. Did you get the replacement cartridge based on the model number embossed on the turbo housing that's in your vehicle?

Sorry you are correct Cartridge,no pats multispace was a write off he purchased his as a aftermarket unit from some English company HJ is on it his citroen was as ours HDi 1.6 90 2012 he never got to fit it before his brother totaled there multispace ,there are only a few numbers on pats and lots on ours ,we purchases a kit to refurb ours but haven''t done a thing since we tried to fit pats and failed Paul

There are different types of audio reversing bulbs available to buy. Two things to take into account. 1. The fitment size/shape and 2. Canbus friendly (i.e. your car will accept the bulb and not throw up a fault on the dash. I have tried some in the past. From experience I have found they don't last very long. A reversing proximity sensor kit may be a better option. They are inexpensive but installing it may be a challenge for the average diy enthusiast. Driveway Dudes - Paul

Hi, Hitting potholes can indeed cause steering issues, e.g. damage to tyre, damage to wheel, steering mis-alignment, suspension, etc. We would recommend you bring it to a reputable tyre garage to have the tyre, wheel and tracking/wheel alignment checked. If you decide to have it tracked/aligned you may find it has resolved the issue. If not, then you may need to further investigate.

On this car the EGR valve is situated near the bulkhead. Air comes from there and then passing through the turbo. Your spray will never reach the EGR valve here because it is situated before the turbo inlet

i just bought a 06 ford focus mk2 n the car once started is okay but if i park it up and leave it for 20 mins or so and try to start it then it doesnt start unless i bump it or i use a booster, it will turn over about 10 times then a click and then i think the battery is about dead but i had my alternator and battery checked n they are fine? any ideas please

Sounds like it could be the battery but there could be underlying or other issues too. Easiest way to check is start the car and disconnect the + clamp on the battery terminal. if the car dies then your alternator has had it. If it continues to run then it's may be the battery. Another issue is that your coil pack could be overheating and giving a weak spark, thus the need for a booster. let us know how you get on. Paul

okay thanks mate also i forgot to mention its a 1.8 tdci and now i noticed like a whooshing or whining noise really loud when the car is in motion and when i accelerate past 2000 revs but if i depress the accelerator it stops, the more revs the louder the noise, does not seem to do it much when cold though.

We don't have a 1.8tdci but from what i've heard it could be any number of things from loose or broken pipe/s, injectors/rail, starter motor, dual mass flywheel/clutch, turbo, wastegate actuator, etc. To us it would be a process of elimination by checking one thing after another. Ford has been using the 1.8 engine since the 80's. It's known to be pretty bullet-proof and problems are generally attributed to poor maintenance or ancillary parts failing. Hope this helps. Paul

Hello gentlemen,I have a nissan primastar 2.0,its got 250,000 kms on it,has been well mantained,oil ,filters,air sensor. I drove it the other day and it sounded like it backfired and lost power felt like it was running on 3 cylinders? gave a puff of light blue smoke.started it today it was smoking slightly,took it up the road and it gushed out clouds off white smoke so brought it back not blowing white smoke on tick over,??? could it be EGR, water in the fuel ,coreplug? any ideas Thanks in Advance

Hi paul just checked the oil and water both look normal,no gunk or drops on the dipstick water looks good just started it now and i can,t see anything coming out of the exhaust even when revved? and seems to be running fine.

That's good news. Check again when the engine gets up to running temperature. Excessive white smoke is usually diagnosed as a blown cylinder head gasket. Sometimes everything can seem quite normal until the engine gets hot, metal expands and gaskets soften. Keep an eye on it just in case and try to avoid any long journeys until you're certain it is alright. Paul

Good idea. OBD check may find something. You'd definitely know if it was a blown turbo as you would have billowing and heavy blue/black smoke. Let us know how you get on.👍 Paul

Here is the problem with doing this, this way. It is possible that this will clean your EGR valve and upper head all though the problem is it will push all the soot through to your DPF filter, you may think that is what's meant to happen and yes that's it's job but it's designed collect small amounts at a time then regenerate if you wash through a large amount at once it's going to block and destroy your DPF filter a very expensive part. And it will no longer regenerate and the results is you will need to replace it. I learnt that the hard way. Id recommend disconnecting the DPF filter from your exhaust then flushing the EGR valve. I did what this video shows, a week later received engine warning light with error code telling me that my DPF filter is blocked and can not regenerate . I'd assume the EGR valve clean has washed through more than soot and clogged my filter. Now IV had to spend $1000 for a new filter.
