One of the main reasons for driver shortage these days I think is wages. The rate of pay and the cost of living are so far apart these days. Yes there are a small handful of good driving jobs out there, but the rest don't add up. Great video as always Ian.

The reason for no drivers Ian is wages still BS money 135-140 a day down west. Treated like crap by hauliers. The rates hauliers moan about is their own doin by cutting each other's throats for work instead of standing together and keep the rates at a respectable level for everyone. I used to love driving but not anymore, I don't think I'd drive full time again. Good video Ian they are a savage truck

I spent my childhood in trucks with my dad. All i ever wanted to be was a truck driver but my dad pushed me away from it telling me to get a trade first then i can go driving if i want and ill always have something to fall back on. That was thirty years ago and he could see the problems in the transport industry even back then. Of course there are exceptions within the industry but generally it’s really long hours for low pay high stress and little or no respect. Being told you cant have a pay rise while money is thrown around on classic trucks and other toys for bosses. Same story everywhere i suppose.

Hi ian. Im a truck driver now 19 years and wouldn't recommend it. Long hours, working night, weekends, always this is the last load for today until its tipped and just one more then its 9pm before home for 6am . Anyways a few cvs thrown into builders provider's for forklift driving just as good a wage at end of week and more life too

During the Celtic tiger years I seen guys become owner drivers after paying diesel, tires, maintenance you would be lucky to make a weeks wages. Personally I believe the problem is there never was a drivers union, all there ever been is a haulage organisation, drivers never had a say, until that happens drivers will always be taking advantage of.

Hello Grant, I must say the 560 S is a lovely Scania. But there’s one thing missing in the cab. A coffee ☕️ machine! Every trucker needs a fitted one for the price they sell it for. Thanks for the video buddy. I’m hoping to have my own one day 👍

I struggle to see the lack of drivers issue people speak about - although conditions etc are absolute bollocks for the hourly rate, however i do think that having a larger volume of owner drivers, or company operators as you find in north america would be of something of a benefit over here, all we've got is the same big company's dominating the job market, and the work being subbed out at low rates - essentially the same trickle down economics that politicians thinks works for the masses, this is an industry that is meant to be regulated heavily for "fair competition" hence why you have drive time regulations to create a fair competition, but in reality - its far from it and the 1% is killing it for the 99%.

I’m a 52 year old IT Manager and have always loved trucks growing up opposite a haulage yard that used to run DAF 2800 to 3600 then onto to 95’s but sadly went bust as work shifted. I am hoping to finally get my HGV licence later this year and want to do the odd bit of driving on a weekend for enjoyment but not sure what opportunity’s there will be. Do you have any advice? I live in St.Helens so Irish work might be a bit tricky 😉

The previous models and current NG Scania's do come with apple car play. It depends if you spec it with it or not. A easy way to tell is if the steering wheel has the voice control button above the volume mute button on the left hand side of the wheel. Car play cant work without that 'Siri' button. Some of our trucks have come without apple car play due to 2 reasons. 1. either theirs been supply chain issues and they have delivered it without. 2. Some of our customers require us to have our phones off when driving so no point spec'ing with apple car play.

Great Scania report ian, all the modern day trucks are a nice place to be nowadays, as for drivers, it’s all going down hill, I retired end of 2022 and I loved driving lorries for 52 years, wild horses wouldn’t get me back into truck driving now, I toughed it out until 68.5 y/o, who’s going to take the reins after all us old drivers finish ?, I’ve still got my hgv license but my cpc expires this month and I won’t renew that, all these you tube influencers are bringing some attention to trucking but the audience are school kids, years off getting an hgv license, I’m so glad I’m out of it, and I’m the last generation of my family to be involved in transport, our company was born in 1916 by my grandad, my dad took it over until he died in 1988 and I went owner driver untill 2000, then I drove for a local firm from 2000 to 2022, it’s happening the world over, USA Europe uk substandard drivers replacing old hands, it’s a race to the bottom, I feel for the companies trying to recruit drivers, nice modern fleets mostly driven by morons, who have no real interest in trucks/transport, just the pay packet, it’s a sorry state and won’t get any better any time soon,.cheers,.

In the haulage industry your expected to do a week and half of work in one week compared to a job that's a 40 hour week the hours that's expected of you isn't expected in any other industry the wages that's giving for driving aren't enough there big machines and not everyone can do it your expected to give up a day to do a bullshit cpc course that's a waste of everyone's time I'm driving rigid the last nearly four years I start around 5 in the morning generally finished around 2 that's fine gives me time to be part of my kids life's not like most other driving jobs as I said above I have an artic license but won't use it because there's zero work life balance

Why is there not enough drivers? 1. Day Rates - everyone should be paid hourly, paid for the hours worked on a hourly rate reflected for the responsibility involved. Money for flashy trucks but not for drivers, why? The truck is a business asset the driver is not seen as one. Delays in haulage paid for by drivers on day rates. 2. Rates for extra hours, weekends, nights etc should be much higher than days. 3. Respect - there is none or very little for drivers. Not by employers or customers receiving goods. The state of most RDCs and how a driver is treated says a lot. 4. Lack of places to get something decent/healthy to eat and toilets. 5. The level of poor driving on the roads, being cut up, hogging middle lanes of motorways, just drive the M50 in Dublin once in a loaded truck and you will see it. List goes on…. 6…

Pritty much same as every other comment . Pay does not reflect the responsibility Treated badly at deliveries . The days are to long and they are expected. We could all rant for ever about ever little gripe but to be fair a pay rate rise would soon cure the driver shortage.

Driver issues across the board atm, is wages.. when a lot of companies only paying a daily rate and expecting 13-15 hr days, it brings you well below the legal wage in some cases. Hourly rates need to be standard and paid for every hour your working. There is companies out there still just paying the legal minimum here in the North, Frylite pay class 2 drivers £12.07p/hr, a Tesco home delivery driver gets £12.95 p/h (3.5tn van), tell me the incentive here for someone to bust a nut to jump through hoops to get a Class 2 and then a Class 1 all for a job that pays the same if not less than someone working for Lidl or Tesco?

Not enough money per hour. 15 hours a day is two many hours. Delays getting loaded and most of all driving standards have dropped something shocking I gave up driving as I was afraid of being a witness or involved in a fatality. People have no value on there life’s when there over taking hvgs on bends and into oncoming traffic

The game is fucked big companies like stobarts culina etc etc are to blame cutting the rates per tonne drivers wages etc etc cutting each others and everyone else throats to steal work from one and another that’s had a massive effect on the industry full stop and now we are reaping what they sowed ..they go out @ lease 500 units for pennies hence no one can compete so wages are slashed just to stay afloat …my Grandad started his haulage company 75 years ago and he will not run anywhere in the uk it’s all uk to continent and back again only way you can make it pay and sustain it …There are still good runs in the uk but they are getting fewer and fewer as they get swallowed up by the corporates always have little company’s giving out good work but it’s hard to grow depending on these for your business plan

The money is the main point, and the likes of them stupid cpc courses they make us dk don't help either. You can get 18 or 19 an hour driving an RCV now time and a half after 8 hours and home every evening . Why would anyone want to back to artics ? There are no tachograph rules to follow either .

Not a good tour Ian you need to do your research on the truck first and be able to relay the information to us then About drivers it's all about money and work life balance you can get a bus run 4 and a half hours a day 5 days a week and paid 500 euro where truck work can be 5 over 7 and long hours for 850 to 900 its a no brainer

If you are a Truck Driver you have NO LIFE and the Money is not enough. I work on Concrete pumping Trucks and I don't Run the Bigger Trucks Anymore I only work on the Small truck's around Dublin. When I was in my 20s and 30s I use to do 70 to 80 Hours a week now I'm in my 40s and Single I only work the bear Minimum because if I work Overtime I go into a Higher Tax bracket and 90% of what I Earn for doing overtime goes in TAX I don't see any of it so why should I work for Nutting and I'm a single man in my 40s with no children so I get screwed by the TAXMAN and since I started doing less than 40 hours a week I'm much happier because I have a life outside of work.
