3-9-22 Update: Still working on Part 4, sorry for the long wait! Check out KZbin Community or Patreon for a poll about where you would like to see updates in the future so you don't have to assume that I am in hospital recovering from a wicked bad can opener incident when it takes a few weeks to post something. Thank you so much to everyone following along with this series for the fantastic and overwhelming response so far! It's heartwarming to see so many people enjoying our silly adventure and sharing their own stories in the comments. I am hoping to have Part 4 out in two weeks but it still needs a lot of work so no guarantees. That will be followed up by a bonus video with a lot of extra goofy footage and conversations that didn't make the main cuts. Yes, the radiator (aftermarket upgrade rad for a V8 Mustang) is a bit narrow but no, it is not the main problem.

The bad water pump is an oldskool race style - designed for low flow, and it stalls out at high RPM due to the big open chamber. the idea is it cools while idling between drag pulls, but doesnt sap any HP under load because the water just blows around inside that big cavity

@@tokinabootyammaddy ... I thought about that too but in most cases they don't block enough airflow to make a difference, although they could swing it to the side to prove a point and the forward motion if the car would be enough to keep the trans cool. What they didn't do is look up to see if that radiator has enough square feet of surface to cool the HP they have. I'm betting it's marginal, even thought it's aluminum and 2 cores thick.

This truly is a tale that these guys will tell their children/grandchildren. I’ve taken a trip like this on a self (with a couple of friends and my dad) build hard tail Harley chopper with maybe 100 miles shakedown on it. As bad as it sucked at the time and all the time spent on the side of the highway being absolutely pissed off and ready to burn it to the ground. In the end, it was all the conversations had and time spend with the friends around me and the total strangers that helped me along the way that made the trip so memorable. It’s not even close when comparing a trip with zero hiccups and that first trip on my bike.

@@jgott1745 I would be very surprised if this engine is still wearing it's original head gaskets. If someone installs new head gaskets and doesn't do it correctly, if I remember correctly, installing the gaskets wrong, even though they will install and bolt down fine, you end up shutting off the coolant flow through the heads, so the heads don't get coolant circulating through them and carrying away heat.

We viewers are speculating about many things going wrong with that engine. We need to know the history of that Pinto if had a V8 dropped in from a Ford Mustang, so I read in here somewhere? Yes, saw some dirty and dirt inside the coolant system could very well be a headmaster incorrectly installed but We need ask the guys who drive that good old Pinto give us more information about the engine to better justify where the real problem is? I love this series and that old Pinto is sure going to amaze Ford's CEO, Jim Farley.

While watching THIS episode I just remembered something that happened to me years ago!! I owned a 1981 Chevy Citation at the time and it too had a cooling system problem!! For weeks I chased it, swapping water pumps, changing to two different thermostats and I ever "boiled out" the radiator with a cooling system flush and nothing worked! AND as strange as my problem was, the inline four kept overheating no matter what I did to it, which was only compounded by the fact it was the middle of December (Winter) in my Upstate New York home with outside temps around 25 degrees or less most days!! I finally yanked the radiator and took it to a shop that works on them as a core for a replacement!! And as I was given the new replacement radiator, the guy behind the counter asked why I was changing it and I told him the problem I had ran into!! Oddly he suggested that "If you install this radiator and you still have the same problem, it (the problem) might actually be your heater core!"!!!!!!! And it was then he asked for the specs on the car again, and looking it up, the heater core was only $25 to replace! I thanked him and told him that I'd be bad if the car overheated again, and must be he figured I would return, because three days later the car over heated again, and when I walked into the radiator shop, before I even got to the counter he already at the heater core laying there and rung up as I began to tell him to "order me a heater core, please!"!! In short he'd already taken it upon himself to order it the day I picked up the radiator, and it was a good thing he did......because installing the heater core I never had a problem with the car over heating ever again!!
@ice44567
@ice44567 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of older cars had no bypass for the heater core, so if the heater core got plugged up with rust/sediment from an iron block/head engine that didn't get good cooling system maintenance, it would essentially get to a point where it was an impossible restriction for the water pump to push through. But usually when that happened the heater cores just ruptured and peed on the floor lol

I'm a little late to the party but I've been thinking the same thing since day one. No way does that rad have enough surface area to drop the temp of the coolant as it flows through it. Almost looks like the 4 cylinder rad, I'm sure the V6 unit is bigger. The new rad for my V8 Mustang II is nearly twice as wide and bit taller, I'd think that would be sufficient for the Pinto as well.

It’s a drag racing pump! It moves water at low revs to keep cool while getting to and from the lines, for the 12-13 seconds you are at full revs over the 1/4 mile cooling isn’t a concern, plus at 120mph plus you get more air through the radiator!!

After watching how scared the troubles made them I guess i must have went through a lot as a kid. We had troubles in freezing cold weather along the highways of Northern Alberta over and over. Including times when the water pump died and the system didn't hold water etc. We did things like melting snow or in Summer getting water from the ditches from puddles etc. Then driving for ten minutes and doing it all over again until we got to where ever. Being stuck in winter -40 and colder. But I'll say one thing. Canadians ALWAYS stopped. Not just one once in a while. But many over and over. If they could help we accepted it and they did. If not we were gracious.

I had a 76 F100 that had an even "better" fuel line than that. It had a 360FE in it and for whatever reason not only did they run steel line on it but they decided to run it up the passenger side of the block right through the middle of the exhaust manifold.. Yeah... One day I was sitting at a light in town that took 15 minutes to change and needless to say at 8mpg I decided to shut it off instead of wasting gas and having it overheat.. Of course seconds later the light finally changed but surprising nobody reading this it wouldn't start back up no matter what I did. Some guy with a quad cab OBS F350 460 pulled me to a nearby parking lot after a motorcycle cop pulled up and bitched me out for not moving (wasn't my fault) and half an hour later my dad showed up to bring me home. Somehow we ended up spending a little time in town and deciding to check it one more time after it had sat for about an hour and a half total and suddenly it magically ran again with us having no clue why. It was only back at home that I looked at it again and noticed the fuel line and put my hand on the carb only to burn the shit out of my hand.. So I guess it was fine so long as you didn't sit idling for 15 minutes.. and no.. I never fixed it because in my dad's eyes "why fix what isn't broke? It's working now.." Needless to say if I ever get another old car or truck (the prices are INSANE these days in NorCal, people want 5-6k for things with no engine or transmission!) I'll definitely check where the fuel line is routed and maybe even put a fuel cooler on it. I don't know if they did it as a smog thing thinking it'd somehow make you burn less fuel if it was preheated just like with that stupid exhaust passage in the intake but it was a really stupid idea.

Engine Masters did an episode where they tested different cold air intake systems, and different fuels (pump gas, race gas, meth). Long story short, cold FUEL makes more power than cold air, and even keeps the engine temperature down.

Yes, cold fuel makes more power but you lose fuel economy. That doesn't mean you should run you're fuel line close to the exhaust. The best fix for the problem he had was to buy a return style filter and put it in the engine bay, run yourself a fuel return line to the tank, problem solved.

Anything that is pre smog here in ca. is like gold…….even if it has no motor or trans…..I live in the s.f. Bay Area and was able to score a ‘73 c10 short bed fleetside for $3800…..I found it in Stockton and it wasn’t running and needed much love it was a 250 straight 6 with a 4 speed granny low transmission…..that were in unknown condition…..he wanted $5000 for it I kicked the tires and beat him down to $3500 once I flashed him cash money…..then was able to negotiate a tow back home from him for another $200……I had asked him if there was a u haul nearby so I could rent a car trailer but that’s when he said I have one and offered up his services……needless to say 4 days later I had a cammed 5.3 LS with a 3000 stalled th350 swapped and running in there and replaced the hood doors and fenders in the following weeks, I’ve already got the white base coat with blue ghost pearl flake paint on hand and just got some final prep work before I paint it in my garage like I did with the nova in my lil picture……..needless to say I can sell it as is without paint sitting in primer for $10+K but after I paint it I should have no problem getting $15-20k here in the s.f. Gay area……but honestly I don’t think I wanna sell it …..just trying to figure out how I’m gonna tell my wife considering we already own 6 very nice luxury sports cars and suv/ diesel truck….all GM lsa/LS/duramax….besides our mbz cls550…….I honestly think that the mbz will be the one getting sold before the c10

Found this on Patreon :::Hello! After receiving messages from several concerned viewers (including my mom) I should probably confirm that I am, by all reports, not currently deceased. Pinto Odyssey Part 4 is in progress and taking longer to edit than expected, which I quite honestly should have expected. I'm not going to throw out a tentative upload date because I was wrong the last 100 times and should probably stop guessing.

true because coolant constantly flows through the heater core, why in old cars your feet will still get with the heat off lol new cars have flow control valves to stop that.

Leaving San Antonio at I-10 & loop 1604 there was junkyard I worked at where most of my 37 pintos found their final resting places. We specialized in building one corvette out of one new frame and two wrecked corvettes. Fun memories and lots of learning experiences. We had a old country doctor who knew how to treat brown recluse spider bites before modern medicine at hospitals had a clue, beer and cigarette tobacco soaked and applied to the bite. Your over heating problem is because you are overloaded, between the high temps, tools and parts and the size of all of you that poor pinto it was straining all along the trip.. Great video looks like you would be happy to be home after stressing out from a trip across country. I drove my 1977 pinto wagon from my house in San Antonio to the Seguin, TX with the emergency brake on my way to Georgia.. it melted the wheel cylinders and leaked all the brake fluid out.. I made the rest trip real slow using the emergency brake. Young and dumb and full of... well you know. Y.O.L.O. - You Ought Look Out!!! LOL. Another trip I drove from San Antonio, TX to Georgia and up to Washington DC to paint a house on the return trip the motor went boom in front of CIA headquarters and my dad unbelievably drove up and towed me back to Georgia where we took the heads off thinking it was a head gasket (A common problem with 2.3 pintos) and found out it was the piston rubbed a hole in the cylinder wall.. new block and I was back on the road again.

if they were running the 2.3l engine, that seems viable. One would think the V8 would have zero problem pushing that little car along even if it was full of dirt. I keep thinking head gasket or cracked head or block.
@teslarawks1673
@teslarawks1673 2 жыл бұрын
@@frotobaggins7169 That and the transmission was probably the same one for the 2.3 it probably had a C3 or C4 and really put some heat through that trans cooler and then through the radiator that probably should have had its own fan or maybe the electric fan didn't have but one cycle in order to kick it up a notch when the temps hit 192.. I didn't like that radiator it was special order where a radiator with 4 rows would cool better instead of wider rows in order to keep it cooler.. I think they took out the thermostat didn't the?.. that is a big no-no. that doesn't allow any cooling especially with just water. I didn't have any luck with distilled water when I put in a new radiator and heater core in my Taurus and I tried the distilled water bit but it still rusted out because they come from the factory with rust in the motors and its impossible to get it out completely. I even tried vinegar flush, the shop where I worked has an engine flush machine its good but the rust will always come back. I would have crimped those caps until it fit tight.. I pulled a cap off a Dodge Caravan and it burned me over 65% of my body with big Dill Pickle size blisters.. it took weeks of scrubbing and pain and suffering to get over that mistake.. I got all the time in the world when it comes to allowing a vehicle to cool down ever since then.

When I saw your coolant overflow spewing out the cap… yeah that’s likely a head gasket. Could have been initially caused by the under sized radiator or weirdo water pump. But when I’ve had a bad head gasket it pushed combustion gases into the coolant system which sometimes pressurized the overflow tank. Hopefully not but… good luck!

Been there done that. The year was 1973. I had got of the Army, got married and moved to Houston. We needed to move the mother-in-law from San Antonio to Houston. We reserved a U-Haul truck and the three of us drove to San Antonio on Saturday. We packed her up and headed out Sunday morning. We started with myself, my wife and her brother. We got on IH 10 headed east just like you. We found the U-Haul truck was overheating. A quick look and it was the fan belt was slipping and tighting was not fixing the issue. The belt was glazed. We stopped at a gas station but they did not have a belt that fit. We traveled along iH10 in an over heating loaded U-Haul truck. We would stop at every gas station looking for a fan belt. We had a secrete way of preventing it from getting too hot. We loosed the radiator cap and that limited the temperature to 212, it we did not run dry. We were moving at about 40 mph and visted all the places you did plus some looking for a fan belt. The 800 number from U-Haul was usless on Sunday. We even found a junk yard and they had a used belt, except it turned out to be glazed too but better. What luck. We could close the cap and move slowly. The interesting thing is that we had a chase car that we drove to San Antonio in. The car was a 1971 Pinto my wife had bought new. The Pinto would turn out to be the worst car I have ever owned and the most unreliable. I would have towed the car back with my pickup truck or better yet running away from any Pinto. The demise of my Pinto is a result on the timing belt stripping out and stranding me in Houston rush hour traffic on the Southwest Freeway during a flood. When they talk about your Pinto from the helecopter traffic report you know you have a really bad car.

Nice work lads . Great video to watch. This is teaching everyone who has ever had cooling issues on old cars. Hope the hand has healed up ok. Steam burns can be real bad. I'm hanging out for what the overheating issue is in the end. My bets are on the rad being too small or that motor has a head gasket issue of some sort.

Here's a tip that works for me. I use about a half a cup of The Works toilet bowl cleaner and run the car for about 10 or 15 minutes. Drain system using a garden hose. Also have used a heater core in front of the radiator and bypass the one in the car to keep the temperature down on a need to run cool trip. This will bring your temperature down some as well.
