Thanks for featuring my video, my two broken ribs have recovered. The driver wasnt charged with hit and run, but was charged for careless driving. He got 5 points and a fine. The drivers insurance had to pay £1500 to repair my bike and replace the damaged clothing. And had to pay £3700 for the broken ribs.

The trouble is the camera didn't stop it from happening and its very unlikely the perpetuator will be excluded from driving for long if at all. @@ericritchie6783 I just hope it was reported though, and at least something done to the driver even if very little, it would then put the idea in their mind to be weary of doing it again knowing there 'might' be a camera to catch them. Correct though that punishments for laws broken are a joke in UK, cutbacks to the police (and every other emergency service) means there's virtually no police on the roads as a deterrent anymore, they cannot even get enough staff to deal with cam vid reports, even then all that for a caution lol, yet there's over a thousand people with over 40 points on their licence and still allowed to drive so what happened to 12 points means a ban ?

So much respect to the driver in the last clip - bullies like the one behind them save seconds at most with dangerous overtaking, as when I’m on my bike I often catch up to them at the next set of lights anyway. I am always so grateful for someone who waits for a safe spot to pass.

This very Saturday morning just gone i went to go fill up after work and had someone right up my ass in a 30 zone, i was actually going 32mph but because no one was around they wanted me to probably do 40, i just held back and didn't let it get to me. I really liked the last clip the most, the “I’m not gonna let people bully me in doing something unsafe” attitude is something I admire and is what I’m striving for in my lessons, all because of impatience and lack of full awareness of surroundings. Plus if the car had done the overtake, it would have had to wait for the white car turning around at the very end of the same clip saving them ZERO time.

@@AviatorCameron That's a really bad take - not every car accelerates the same, dash cams distort footage and make things seem closer than they are (and so distances required to overtake safely appear shorter than they actually are), it was going uphill and so would have reduced their ability to accelerate, there was lots of oncoming traffic so they would have been accelerating into potential trouble and also it would have just encouraged the car behind to overtake and perform a close pass, risking the cyclist.

@@AviatorCameron Agreed that There was more than enough space and time to safely pass the cyclist in the last clip.. I mean he's farther over the line passing the parked cars than he would needed in order to give the cyclist plenty of room. Which would be the main issue rather than speed Over cautious drivers are nearly as bad as reckless ones.. It causes unnecessary obstruction and any time you have obstruction is dangerous. That said, once he was along the parked traffic, he was justified. Though describing their reaction to the impatient driver behind as calm.. ok. XD

Notice how the cyclist decides to get onto the pavement at the earliest opportunity following the horn use. I'm sure they decided they'd rather risk a fine and ride on the pavement than risk a reckless pass from that beeping driver. It's a bit odd that there's a bus/cycle lane going downhill, but not one going uphill. It would be no problem keeping up with traffic doing the 20mph limit going downhill, it's uphill where the cycle lane is most needed. Yet the road space has been handed over to car drivers as on-street parking.

I'm the driver in the last clip. (Second to last is also my clip) It's really nice to see so much support for what I chose to do. It can be difficult when someone is rushing you to feel like you're making the right decision. For anyone asking why I didn't overtake right at the start of the clip, I drive a Toyota iQ with a piddly little 67HP engine and an automatic CVT that can be sluggish, especially on a hill like this (Holloway Head, Brum). @@ibs5080 This happens so often to me. I follow the "can you see the passed car in your rear view mirror?" rule I was taught and that Ashley has mentioned before. But unfortunately that seems to also be enough separation for a dangerous driver to get angry and perform an undertake, so we'll often move left at the same time. At least I indicate to give them a warning, but I've often had to cancel my manoeuvre at the last second to let them pass on the inside
@ibs5080
@ibs5080 Жыл бұрын
@@R0ssMM I can totally relate 100% to your post. It also puts paid to the often quoted statement of "Well if someone can undertake you, it means you should have been on the left". Although that CAN be true, there are also some exceptions, our own respective accounts being one of them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning lane hogging and yes it is a problem on our roads. But there's also a limit as to what's reasonable in terms of when to move left without cutting up other drivers. I'm not going to move left too early just to prevent being undertaken by an impatient driver who's determined to squeeze in between me and the car I've just barely passed. I have to say, I find way too many drivers move back to the left too early after overtaking another vehicle. I actually ended up getting a stone chip on my windscreen because of someone doing that and I'm sure it doesn't help with paint chips on the front edge of the car either. And if it's raining, you get sprayed by the cutter inner. And sometimes I've reached for the brake pedal thinking it might be a crash for cash. All reasons for the overtaker to get properly past before moving back in.
@tjampman
@tjampman Жыл бұрын
I think when he got undertaken it was just about the right distance for him to pull back in the left lane - So yeah no opportunity to pull in before he was undertaken... However... So to me he is bad driver should get a fine, but the van driver now he is reckless, and should have his license revoked before he kills or maims someone

Yes, 0/10. Points on your license for driving in a mandatory bike lane (solid white line). As a cyclist I think painted bike lanes are more dangerous than just cycling on the road normally, because some cars treat the rest of the road as a car lane and close pass or think cyclists are banned from it.

The final clip is a credit to both the driver and the cyclist. There was no safe opportunity to overtake and give enough space for some time due to the parked cars and traffic in the opposite direction, so driver was right to hold back and ignore the impatience of the driver behind him. As soon as there was a long enough break in the parked cars the cyclist pulled to the left to let the traffic past. If only there was more mutual consideration on our roads between cyclists and drivers.

I've driven that 'yellow beetle' road a good few times, and it's really horrible trying to get over into that left lane if it's not clear (like it wasn't in the clip), and there's a left turn a few hundred metres after the junction shown where the roads split, and where 'most' traffic that's on the cammer's road would want to go (i.e. the main road out of Stourport in that direction), so it's typically either wait there, or get stuck further up the road in the 'wrong' lane.

On the subject of close passing, here's a perspective from a pedestrian (me) It's actually nothing to do with car drivers either. So I'm walking along a pavement which is just wide enough for three people walking abreast coming in the other direction. All too often no attempt is made to make space for me, thus forcing me to walk into the road to get past. This could of course put me in real danger but I do check. I'm getting to the point of calling them out on it because it shows a distinct lack of courtesy. Do any others experience this? I'd be interested to know. Yep, gotta say I experience this all the time. Large group is walking towards you, not one makes an effort to clear enough space for a single person to walk past. All it'd take is for one of them to walk behind instead of in a line and all problems would be solved, but I guess that's too much effort for those people. All too often I'm having to step in the road, often without facing the traffic so I can't easily see what's coming, whilst they continue chatting away - as Ashley said in the video "oblivious to the danger they're causing". Another one that grinds my gears is when people are walking slowly on the pavement and make no effort to clear the way for faster walkers. I regularly take quick glances around to see if someone is catching me and thus if I should move over and ensure I give them room to walk around me . Yet all too often slow-walkers walk 3-abreast and take up the entire pavement going at a snails' pace. You wouldn't do that in a car, going 3 abreast at 5mph on the motorway, so why do people do it when walking? So annoying. *PS i'm talking here about those people that walk slow to talk with their friends / partner / children etc, not people who actually can't walk very fast medically (as these people are actually more considerate lol)

But having already done that, they finally gave in and went for it. PLUS...they didn't come to a complete stop at the Stop sign either. I know the previous car made the same mistake but that doesn't make it right either. I was actually rather surprised to see a Stop sign at that junction but it's there to be obeyed.

Assuming that the driver checked mirrors before entering the cycle lane i'd probably rate about the same. Plus he/she gets docked a mark for either having water inside the windscreen or just having useless wipers. Though unusual in the UK, Stop signs are quite common in some european countries, and if you are used to a give-way culture it is very easy to roll straight through them just due to habit. I'm embarrassed to say that i seem to do this in France quite a lot.

I do realise it's only London that that is illegal but it's still something that shouldn't have happened. Nearly every time I ride my bike on the road I get motorists close passing me. I'm talking six inches off my right at times. Twelve inches is common. They even do this while going through tunnels or under bridges leaving me nowhere to go. Very scary. There are way too many motorists who completely abuse cyclists and use their vehicles to purposely intimidate and endanger cyclists. And the best bit is that the police, even with abundant evidence almost invariably fail to pursue charges because they state that it's not in the public interest. It's a preposterous situation which is left unchecked by the authorities. It insinuates that the only justice cyclists can get is directly by themselves, again a preposterous situation. I challenge anyone who's been purposely endangered in this way to remain calm and do nothing because the police often refuse to simply do their job. I've noticed that it's nearly always car drivers who abuse cyclists, not larger vehicles, who I find to be on the whole very careful around cyclists. Like I say, it's nearly every time I ride. Sometimes it happens multiple times even on short journeys. Steep fines and plenty of long-term driving bans is the most appropriate punishment for rogue drivers.

so given the tiny gap between the rear of the cam car and the Audi at the time of the undertake, the only way to safely move to lane one would have been for the cam car to floor it and then move over. Given the traffic levels and the clear dangerous driving manner of the van this would be impractical and unsafe... you would literally be driving flat out into danger. That van one was terrifying. I often cycle for exercise at the weekends and without fail get close passed or beeped at multiple times every time you go out (despite trying not to inconvenience other drivers as much as is safe), to the point that people won't believe how much hate you receive simply for being on 2 wheels and wearing the incredibly unfashionable, but practical, cycling kit. Sometimes, it's impatience or negliagence, but sometimes its just pure irrational hatred. Impatience doesn't explain why some drivers will slow down to berrate you (either for not cycling on the path, even though that's illegal, or not on a shared path, when I'm doing 35mph on a bike with a nice tailwind so it would be unsafe, or for not paying road tax, even though I also have a car, and VED is emissions-based anyway), why sometimes they pass as close as they can on a clear road or honk the horn when 3m behind you, I've had things thrown at me out of car windows, people spit at me. It genuinely feels like some people treat you as sub-human (I think they'd treat a horse and rider with more respect).

Hi Ashley! I have to say that in regards to the first clip, I do seriously think that the UK and other countries could benefit from different colored markings to divide the oncoming lanes. I've noticed more often than not that some of the UK road markings to divide lanes of traffic are the regardless of whether you are on a dual carraigeway, motorway, or just plain old side streets. At 8:22, that's a road I live near and the van driver could have just used lane 3, it's quite legal; he was just being impatient (as you'll see from him weaving across lanes after that undertake). The A3 at this point has a slip road coming on from the same junction (with the A2043) about 200 yards on and then a right-angle side turning (South Lane) a very short distance ahead, followed by another major junction about a mile on which is prone to queueing. The driver might have been intending to pull over, but the van driver couldn't wait and pulled over and passed him straight away. On occasions I've been in an offside lane and can't pull over because of undertakers, and one time I got pulled over on a dual carriageway, driving a 7.5-tonner at 36mph (speed limit was 40), for not moving left quick enough (I had turned off a roundabout into the right lane, having turned right) because a whole load of other vehicles undertook before I could.

The van driver would of undertaken regardless because they left the cammer now time to get over to lane 1 anyway. Also - if the road isn’t too congested and you’re going under an underpass with limited visibility to joining traffic it is good practice to stay in the middle lane to allow traffic from the slip road to join and keep good flow and return to lane 1 afterwards. I would say however in this case, there was too much traffic behind to maintain a position in lane 2 and getting over to lane 1 would of been better for the flow of all traffic.

But, he clearly knew there was an aggressive or impatient driver behind, due to the beeps, flashes and likely revving, so he removed himself from that threat. In an ideal world, as a cyclist myself, I'd recommend that rider gets a bright high vis waterproof backpack cover and they try riding in clothes that aren't black at dawn, dusk or night. Relying on lights alone is increasing your risk. Especially in urban areas, where bike lights are not very distinguishable from the chaotic lights in urban environments. It won't make every unobservant driver see you or care, but it'll move the needle.

There was in no way enough of a space buffer to move back to lane 1 after the overtake. And while yes you could argue the cam makes the object look closer than what it is, the space was just too close. i also believe the cammer does not go back into lane 1, as after the underpass they go through is a entry slip road onto the A3, so maybe keeping that lane free so they don't have to move left, then right for emerging traffic, then back left, and instead only moving left once they are clear of the junction.

It has enough room at the crest for 2 cars to pass, but you have about 0.5 metre TOTAL spare space. The steepness of the bridge also means you can't see what's coming up the other side. There was a detour available, but that added 5 minutes onto a 15 minute route so I didn't do it. So as I am going up this and get to just short of the top, a car races past me very close. Fortunately, I saw them stop next to my next delivery so I went over and asked them why they passed so close. Their response was "I couldn't go any further away, I might've hit a car". The other good one was the Sally Sat -nav in the hire van my brother in law drove to France that told him to drive straight ahead for one hundred metres then turn right!, we were parked in the drive facing South and in front was a thirty foot sheer drop to the river!, the road outside faced West but we were not actually on the road!. Both serve as reminders that we should never suspend our own judgement and simply do as instructed. Many years ago as driving standards fell through the floor I suggested that the easy way to deal with red-light jumpers would be to install very deep pits with trapdoors without any warning sign at strategic sites, periodically the liquids could be pumped from the hole and spread on farmland and occasionally the scrap metal recovered and sold!. My point here is that with this sort of hazard drivers , those that survive , would very soon stop risking it!, Cheers, Richard.

Full credit to the cyclist in the last clip for pulling over and letting traffic pass. I've taken some heat by commenting about cyclists not pulling over in other videos so it's nice to see it being done. Ashley, you've highlighted kerb driving in this video. Sometimes it's necessary - such as passing an obstruction or when directed by a police officer - so how about some tips on how to do it safely and without damaging your car?

Pulling up behind the van and giving a nice amount of space ahead. (VG) Crossing a solid line and entering the bike lane. (Poor) Stopping at a stop sign. (Poor) Out of 10 maybe 4 would be more than fair. 10/10 to the guy holding back off the bike at the end, can very easily get rushed in that situation. The passenger helped too, in that she calmed things and made it easier for him to wait patiently.

Been watching these videos for a year and haven't recognised anything. Then 2 clips come up in one. (Opening clip - Surrey Heath, near Longcross Car Park and the A3 clip) For the opening clip Satnavs are very clear with directions for that particular junction.

When I get close passed, I generally note the number plates if I can and have noticed that the LGV left hand drive trucks with foreign plates are possibly the worst as they can see me better than the right hand drive equivalent, therefore tend to leave less space. Also trucks and coaches that are travelling at approximately 50 MPH can create a vortex where the bike can be pulled into the slipstream. This can be more pronounced on a bike loaded with four panniers as there is a greater surface area for the "draw" to affect. It can be very disconcerting as it can take the bicycle into the traffic flow, necessitating a quick course adjustment. It's a shame that drivers aren't required to experience cycling on busy roads before taking their driving tests. Some drivers may not be able to cycle but there should be tandems or trikes available for this. Maybe they would be more thoughtful then.

My grandfather tried to literally turn right on a roundabout once, like your Mini driver. Thankfully my grandmother was navigating for him and was able to alert him in time. Personally *I* thought her direction to "turn right" was obvious that he was supposed to go around the roundabout first, but apparently it hadn't registered with him...

Cyclists get a rough time on the road, and not just from impatient/idiotic drivers. I’ve seen clips of aggressive wild animals from ostriches to kangaroos chasing and in some cases attacking cyclists.

7:32 I don't doubt it's the police considering the way I've seen them driving both in London and Yorkshire. If a person thinks or knows they're exempt from most of the road rules, then they'll take advantage, it's human nature.

Clip 3 - Did you see the state of that road? One deflection by the cyclist and that clip would have been shown in a Coroner's Court. I do hope that was sent plodwards. There is nothing to learn from that here because we all know how to pass cyclists (see below) and because the kind of people who drive like that are impermeable to understanding. The last clip highlights something I mentioned with regard to yellow boxes - that some drivers will try to bully others into breaking the law or driving dangerously. The cammer understood that and reacted really well. That's a difficult situation and you can hear the stress in his voice. I wonder if plod would act on that if it went to them. I suspect not.

Clip 9 I was there a couple of hours ago. Stourport. To be fair, I fully understand the yellow Beetle driver choosing to wait for a gap instead of using the right lane and then merging into the left lane. The road splits shortly afterwards by a left turn only towards Worcester and a right bend into Droitwich Town centre with a mounted bollard in between. Do it "correctly" and you'll find yourself having to either stop anyway before merging into the left lane depending on the traffic heading towards Worcester or having an impatient driver behind you forcing you to drive around Stourport again. Been there, done it, got the T shirt. Edited to correct town.

Well done to driver in last clip, the anxiety caused by the car behind comes across strongly in the clip, but he stayed calm and dealt with it brilliantly. Felt Ashley was too harsh on the guy not moving back to left lane sooner. Sometimes it’s best to keep a steady straight line and leave the lunatic do there thing. 6/10 for driver turning left. Seemed like they assessed the situation and made a decision that it was safe to use the road available, even though it was a solid line.

Well, that last clip SHOULD just be normal, correct driving. But it is honestly a bit unnerving when someone behind is trying to bend you to his (or occasionally her) will; an average motorist should not be required to have nerves of steel for a simple car journey...

Clip 24 is all too familiar to me (both as a cyclist and a driver giving space to cyclists). I feel like most people don't look out for/think about cyclists/pedestrians at all when driving. If it's not a 10sqm box with big headlights then apparently it doesn't exist.

Clip 14 , technically driver should not have entered the cycle lane when it was bounded by solid line ( that is if ROI regs are same as here ? ) . However , if he checked carefully and no cyclists were coming up behind then no real harm done for that . More serious , however , is failure to stop at the STOP sign : it is there to force drivers to stop and check the road is clear before emerging and these are not put there as decorations ; there has to be limited visibility or a history of incidents to get one placed there ; although the cycle lane continues around the corner , although the STOP line does not extend across the cycle lane , cyclists should stop and look too before they emerge as they are just as likely to be hit as someone in a motor vehicle , and they are more easily hurt .

Great video as usual! Talking about poor lane discipline, I recently went on a trip to Derby and came back along the M6, the entire way home the middle lane was full of idiots doing 60 when the left lane was clear. I didn't want to undertake, but I also didn't want to move to the right lane where the other type of idiots were flying along at 90, what's the best way to win in that situation? Side note: In clip 6 I spotted a silver Daewoo Lanos, the first time I've seen one other than my own on the road!

I’d travel in lane 1 at 60/65 open road in front of you and drift by the stuff to your right. Being vigilant of lane changing of course. You’re in a faster moving lane, not undertaking. I’ve done it and was in lane one for miles with the occasional visit to two to overtake a lorry

I am often in this situation too. Sometimes I'll end up slowly undertaking in lane 1, but that can be really dangerous so I avoid it if at all possible. But then you either stick in lane 1 matching their speed or do the same in lane 2, adding to the problem 🤷‍♂️ A flash of the lights is probably the best approach, but I'm always worried that I'll be perceived like the usual bullies who flash their lights when following. One time that I did undertake was on a 4-lane bit of the M6, but they were going 65 in lane 4 when 2 and 3 were empty, so I went by in 2 at 70. They did move into 3 eventually, nearly hitting a car that was overtaking me.
