You should have unlocked the doors as you reached the station. The train was only doing 8 or 9 miles an hour as it passed the platform, and from what I could see the passengers looked able-bodied enough to make the jump. Checked luggage may have been a problem, but you can't have everything.

Hmm... only last week I joined one of these heading back to Zummerzet, the morning after a Hyde Park gig. We sat in a hot and stuffy carriage whilst the driver told us he was waiting for “technical” to fix one of the power cars. After 40 mins we had to decamp to another train 10 platforms away (in double quick time). We then joined the other people who were already catching that train. When we got to Reading we were told that the route had changed and it wasn’t going to our station any more.... much to many people’s annoyance. We had to get out in Bath and then make 2 more changes before getting home. Gods Wonderful Railway, has turned into Generally Woeful Railway.

So here's the thing about train brakes. They take a while to activate throughout the train. So, you know... "i'll make it at about the half mile mark" is not gonna get you licensed as a train driver any day soon.
@christopherflynn40946 жыл бұрын
Not true the HSTs brakes come on instantly. its just the weight of the train and the efficiency of the brakes that take the time to slow it. Braking from 125 to 70 in half a mile would have been possible if hed gone full service straight away.
@Scy6 жыл бұрын
EP brakes are still pneumatic. Air still has to move from A to B and fill the brake cylinders.
@christopherflynn40946 жыл бұрын
Scy the braking is still instant even with an air brake system.
@jaff40826 жыл бұрын
I can confirm brake applications on a hst really are not instant. Certainly not in comparison to other trains
@Scy6 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but EP brakes are also computer (or in older instances electro-mechanically) guided to brake at certain strengths to give a smooth braking curve. That means you'll sometimes even get worse brakes with EP, than with pure pneumatic, because you can't manually override the braking strength. I do believe that british trains have a fail safe there, that if you go full service, it actually switches to pure pneumatic and bypasses the EP system. But that again means that full service is slower to take, but brakes harder eventually. Still slow. I'm a train driver (not UK) and you really have to take a lot of factors into consideration when braking, not just distance. Could also be a slight gradient, which will significantly extend your braking distance, more than you'd expect.

The railways are on a slow but certain path to metrication, speeds and distances on new lines are fully metric e.g. hs1 is metric and hs2 will be metric. Trains and stations are already designed in metric.
