Please read the full description.
This video is my history with the 1993 Rover 216 Coupe. A true love story as I drive it since new - for 30 years now.
This is one of the last analogue cars that were built to last not relying in digital technology, unlike modern machinery that is nothing more than a computer on wheels (I also drive a Mercedes A class semi-automatic so I know what I am talking about).
Only the engine management is digital. Everything else is mechanic and that is one of the reasons for its easy maintenance. No software upgrades needed here and almost "any" mechanic knows how to work on it.
It is not the best car ever done, it has a lot of plastic parts inside and by being 30 years old and counting with the amount of streets paved with cobble stones in this city, it is no wonder that it rattles a lot. By having a glass top and frameless door windows it also does not help on this. But it is a nice car in the summer time. And it runs and runs. Sometimes I don´t use it for 3 weeks and then it goes for a 400 kms trip. Sometimes a fast one, if I am late… You just have to be careful with the fluids, obviously, and with gas. Apart from that I have absolute confidence on it.
As you can imagine, in 30 years, there are a lot of stories to tell and not all are good.
Here´s a time Machine if you want to jump to a particular section:

I have a similar story that starts the day before I was born when my parents bought a 97 Dodge Intrepid. Black, base model 3.3l last year of the model. I grew up in the back seat until they got a mini van and parked it in the back yard 06-07. Then drug it out for my older sister to drive in high school 08-12 and me right after that 12-16. The paint wore off as sitting outside for years will do. When we repainted it we did the body first and left the roof primer white. We didnt clear coat the body since we planned on finishing the roof and later on finished the roof and cleared it. Now its a nice two tone gloss black over chalkboard, just don't lean on it. I always said it would be mine and later on my dad agreed that it was mine even though he hadn't signed over the paper work. I delivered pizzas in it for years and paid for all the repair parts. Finally its signed over to me. The front right shock finally broke after being loose for quite a while two weeks before Christmas. A $150 shock and a tie rod end and she's back on the road. I have the other front shock, new control arms for the bushings, basically a whole new front suspension since the bushings are nonexistant and there's play in most of the steering. Just need to find time off work to get the work done. She's sitting at 270k miles and ready for another quarter. Its had a water pump at some point, probably an alternator or two, I remember changing out an axle but don't remember why. All work has been done on gravel in the yard with hand tools and an air ratchet. If i ever need to dig into the motor I would love to bore it and use a 3.8 rod piston crank from the caravans but I don't think I'll have to any time soon. Theres still a couple LH cars kicking around my town. I pass a black Eagle Vision (how's that for obscure) that must have gone to the shop recently since it was gone and a mid 10s Hyundai was in its place and I was sad but it has popped back up.

I love your passion for the car. It has always been one of my favourite cars but when I went to buy one in the nineties I found that I couldn't afford the insurance here in the UK

You can´t have it all. Cars are cheap there, expensive here. You can tune the cars in the UK but you pay the price in insurance. We can´t do it (by law) but insurance is ok here (I always paid around ±250€/year). Amazing car - almost trouble free if you keep it in good condition. Drove it yesterday - noisy but great fun as always. Cheers!

I enjoyed listening to this ! warmest regards Agreed 30 years later it still looks good !! (I think it was called the Tomcat when it was in development) some kind of joint development with Honda ? (a Honda gearbox and other influences I suspect ?)

That's a lovely personal history you've put together there. The car is quite beautiful, especially in red. Very sorry to hear about your leg. That crash damage looked bad. Glad to hear you are ok.

Thanks for your input. Yes, it´s a kind of love story where I am the good and the bad guy... I love the car yet I broke an engine and destroyed my dream car... My leg is fine, when taking in account what happened. Nobody knows unless I show it. I walk fine and run. The muscle stiffs when changing weather but that´s all. It´s like a calendar... It looks like a frankenstein leg though... It was a nasty crash against a tree. My fault so I can only live with it, learn and hate myself for doing it. Cheers from Portugal and thanks for watching!
