In this final instalment of Blossom's trip to town, we make our way out of Andover and onto the quieter country lanes.
Given that Blossom has a tend to drift to one side, Barry talks about why that might be and what we might try to fix it. He also runs a little experiment driving without using the reins at all, to see just where Blossom will take us under her own steering!

What a joy to watch Blossom learn to blossom and for us to learn how she explores her path whilst rein free. She is such a beautiful soul, much like your good self. Thankyou for sharing your journey with us.

Thank you Barry, Rhi, Blossom and Team. This is a Wonderful lesson about Drifting,~ and how Patience and Understanding are The Very Best Training Methods Ever, Fantastic to Watch and Learn from you,, although Experience is Key, and it Shows in your Patience. Experience will teach us to Never Punish, or Lose our Temper with the Horses not Ever!! *Discipline is Very Different to Punishment!* ~as You Calmly show everytime,, we Must at least Try to See the World,,, Through the Horses Eyes,,, and, Understand that they Think in a Different Way than us Humans!! Highly Intelligent as many Horses are,,,They Process Life-Lessons in a Different Way,, rather like Children.... ~and Forcing or Punishing a Horse will Never work especially in the Longterm, being Counter-Productive, and Cause Most of the Problems we often see in a Healthy Horse. Bless you All for Calmly Showing Blossom and Every horse you Teach, how to Enjoy Life~ with us Humans. Thank you for taking us out with you, Much Appreciated, Andrea and Critters. ...XxX....

My father in law used a horse and cart to deliver the milk he used to say the worst day of his life was when he bought a truck you can't whistle a truck to move on

Absolutely Agree with your Father in Law!! Also, if someone tried to Drive my best friend away, he would have stood, waiting for me, no matter what the Miscreants tried And, ,,Trucks wont find thier way Gently home,,,if the Driver is so bone- Tired, that theyre almost asleep,,, Safely~ Neither!! (God Bless you, Ashley!!) Hope you have a wonderful weekend Susan!!

When learning to drive horses I was told to gently use my whip as slapping reins on the horse causes the mouth to receive a jab.

Good question. Wy did the driver didn`t use a whip, while the horse walks sideways in the direction of the overtaking car?
@Mitmacher

My answer would be: It's so uncomfortable to always hold the whip in your hand. You also can't use the lines quite evenly because one hand is heavier. And if you don't have it in your hand, it's usually too late. And at that exact moment you don't want to change the lines to reach for her. And when you use it at the right time, you don't hit the right one right away Spot at the right speed. Or you irritate the horse even more because it is unfamiliar to him. So you leave it at home straight away or just take it with You because of untrained dogs and to protect the horse from vampire mosquitoes on your horse.

@@Mitmacher I can use a hunting whip to control foxhounds and also ride my horse competently. Always carry a whip of sorts on any horse in the outside hand and use it for guidance not to punish the animal . Practice helps enormously but obviously we are all different.

Yes. Good. Thankyou. I want to convert a telescopic fishing rod to a whip, because they are very light.@@pixie706

I think it's a question of either or. Either you use the whip on a horse always and correctly or not at all. And it's something completely different whether you have a competition for 10 minutes drives or takes a trip for 2 hours. In competition, however, it is well demonstrated that the whip is a useful aid.

That horse should not be treated like that, she is clearly not happy and struggling. Let's strap you in the same way and have you pulling whatever it is she is pulling.

In the West, carriage horses usually look healthier and sportier than their owners. So they are the winners after all. "To be more than to have." Peter Sloterdijk: "The human being (and the horse) is the sum of his exercises." It may be that the carriage horse was the first step of temptation, to become lazy. And 99 out of 100 fall for it. Last week an agricultural contractor told me that he couldn't find employees unless he had the most modern (comfortable) tractors and trucks. --- People are most motivated by fear, greed and convenience. what serves the industry best, just not sustainably and at the expense of all values. Blossom probably wasn't having his best day. And I,m quite sure that he will not work in the same age (75) of Mr. Hook

Maybe she's hot these days and dreams of a great stallion. So everything else is secondary for her and she does it without passion.

And in case that, can we be happy that it's a mare and not a human, So not very often in heat as a mare. Similar to how a female dog only comes into heat for a few days every 6 months. Hopefully in a week she will be trotting in front of the carriage as willingly and lightly as if ekialuagirl were riding her. But don't forget that she was bred for hard work and not for dancing. And You and I ?
