I have driving non stop for two years plus now. Satnav has helped me to go to so many cities and towns other than London...I was confident the first I used it and it got even better..I love this changes. Only people who find learning difficult or learn differently will have problem. But I hope they find a way.

I passed mine on the 5th of December. I found it confusing sometimes as when two side roads were close to each other turning right or left, the TomTom did not show clearly what turning I had to take. Also there was a Junction which was described as a round about. I was constantly asking the examiner “is it that road” “ do they mean the next one” etc. I got two minors both during independent driving.

The DVSA will not update the sat navs the examiners use on driving tests - they can be up to 3 years out of date.
@joosiej856 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I don't understand what people find so confusing about following a Satnav. Yes, sometimes it gives a strange description or isn't totally clear, but that's where your own skill, observation and judgement comes into it. When you're following a Satnav you are still meant to be observing road signs, road markings etc. If you are paying attention to the road and what's going on around you, you should be able to work out for yourself what it is telling you to do even when the instructions aren't completely clear or accurate. Secondly, they did not put the Satnav section into the test to try and trip you up - the test is your chance to show that you have all the skills necessary to be a safe driver, and since you are highly likely to have to follow a Satnav at some point when you're driving with your full license, it's important that you have learned how to use it correctly.

Who is the idiot who brought sat nav into the driving test. The damn things are not 100% reliable. It's stressful enough to do the test without sat nav sending you down the wrong route. I have heard that some examiners switch them off after a short while, so even examiners don't seem to like them. Bad idea all round !!!

I have never used a Sat-Nav or a Hands Free Kit whilst driving as I believe them both to be a distraction to the driver whose all around focus should be fully on the Road.

It gets it wrong some time...if Satnav are not up to date... I recently have to update but it still got confused around Lewisham round which is new and under construction...few problems. BUT OVERALL, IT'S GOOD IMPROVE TO MODERN DAY DRIVING. ANCIENT DAYS ARE OVER GUYS. EMBRACE IT.

@DrivingLessonsnet4 жыл бұрын
Although I grew up in the Enfield/Southgate area and the A10 was a big part of my early driving experience, I now live in Hampshire. So, sorry, but it's a bit far to come to make a video about specific roads :) Once you can drive, you can apply the same techniques to drive anywhere. My videos are aimed at giving people skills in reading the road and anticipating both what the road will do and what other drivers may do - whatever road you happen to be driving on.

On the driving test, is the examiner going to plug in the sat nav into the 12v power socket of the car? (asking for own car test purposes, in case of dashcam taking up the available socket). Thanks.
@DrivingLessonsnet3 жыл бұрын
1 in 5 tests don’t use the sat nav at all and ask you to follow signs instead. On the tests which do use sat nav the examiner won’t plug it into anything in your car, it will just be run on its internal battery.

@@joosiej85 It can sometimes be confusing. If you just passed your driving test then you are probably not the right person to fully understand what I mean. I have been on motorways and it is not always easy to count. Believe me, as you keep driving you will understand what I mean.

At 6.30 it says cross the roundabout and 3rd exit. Crossing the round about means straight on though right?
@DrivingLessonsnet6 жыл бұрын
The SatNav is very inconsistent in the way it describes roundabouts. The key information you need from it is the exit number and a quick glance at the map to get an idea of the layout. But then IGNORE the satnav from that point on. Now concentrate on the road signs and road markings - where is exit 3 on the road sign? remember that other drivers can see the road signs and markings but they can't see your sat nav. The satnav is only a guide BUT SOMETIMES IT GETS IT WRONG OR CONFUSES - learn to use it as an early warning (often it will prompt you before you see a sign) but also learn to ignore it when you are dealing with signs, markings and other traffic. Remember that if you pick the wrong lane just stick in it and go where the lane goes rather than where the sat nav wants you to go. The sat nav will recalculate if it needs to to find another way to get you there.

when my instructor should teach me sat nav? nearly exam time or from beginning
@DrivingLessonsnet6 жыл бұрын
There is no right or wrong time. It depends on the area you are in, the way you learn and the way your instructor prefers to reach. personally I like to start it fairly early, just getting the pupil to drive home at the end of a lesson following the sat nav when they already know where they are going - so that they can see where the instructions may be helpful and where they may be confusing/ distracting. I always use it on familiar roads first then venture out to new places using the sat nav on roads the pupil doesn't know. BUT you need to be good at following road signs and road markings before using the sat nav because you need to combine the info from the signs/markings with the info from the sat nav to come up with the safest choices.

@DrivingLessonsnet7 жыл бұрын
That's a little worrying since the independent drive will now be 20 mins which is a huge chunk of the 35-40 minutes you will drive on the test. Did you know the test was changing on 4th December and have you practiced the new manouveres (driving in and reversing out of a parking bay and pulling up on the right hand side of the road, reversing then rejoining the traffic)?

Thought learners have to always stay on the left side of the road? When you went on a 70mph road the person driving was overtaking other vehicles?🙄
@DrivingLessonsnet7 жыл бұрын
There is no such restriction on learners! How do you think people learn to overtake? It's best covered on lessons rather than letting them work it out for themselves after they pass! The examiner expects to see the candidate make progress and keep up with the flow of the road. The moment they pass their test they are a fully qualified driver, so they should be prepared.
@smasheduppumpkinette5 жыл бұрын
I believe it’s called making progress. You need to show you can make progress on the road. No point sitting at 55/60 behind a lorry on a 70 road when there is time and space to overtake. I believe you could get a minor fault for not making progress in this situation. Well that’s my understanding of it anyway.
@kodiac42317 жыл бұрын
I noticed on the sat nav it had the speed limit for each road will it be the same for the actual test?
@DrivingLessonsnet7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kodiac. Yes the speed limit will be shown on the sat nav during the actual test - BUT beware! It is often not correct! See my other video "Sat Nav Independent Drive Farnborough Test Centre" which shows the first 5 minutes driving away from test centre. The speed limit is wrong on several occasions - including a stretch of dual carriageway where the actual limit is 30 but the sat nav says it is 70!! It's also worth pointing out that the sat nav will be on for the entire test (and speed limits showing for the whole test) but only talking to you during the independent drive. I will be covering that in another video soon showing a full 40 minute mock test with manouevre and show me question on the move etc. One final note - only 4 in 5 tests will follow a sat nav. The other 1 in 5 will just follow road signs.
