The cup analogy used to illustrate the anterior and posterior tilts of the scapula by envisioning a liquid inside falling forward or falling backward was seriously so helpful! I appreciate the emphasis on the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle performing synergist movements. This concept makes their actions make sense!

After watching this lecture video on the joint movements of the shoulder girdle, I was amazed when learning about how versatile the shoulder girdle is regarding its vast amounts of movements. Its amazing that the shoulder girdle can depress, retract, protract, elevate, rotate downward, and rotate upward.

I really appreciated the picture of the right-side scapula that was labeled with the movements and the direction. It helped form a reference in my mind and I was able to do the movements myself while looking at it. The shoulder girdle is responsible a much larger variety of movement than i originally thought. Protraction, Retraction, Upward rotation, downward rotation, elevation, depression, lateral tilt, medial tilt, anterior tilt, and posterior tilt.

The clarification with protraction/retraction and abduction/adduction was super helpful! As well as the picture of the directions the scapula will move, clarifying it is the right scapula. How shoulder girdle movement is not dependent on shoulder joint movement, but shoulder joint movement is dependent on shoulder girdle movement.

This video really brought to light how when a patient has a shoulder girdle issue we must take into account the entire shoulder girdle. This is due to most of the shoulder girdle muscles working together which is also something that stuck out to me. Being able to visually see the movements and structure working together through movement really helped me.

The slides and Dr. Goodin's commentary provide explanations of how some of the most complex joints in the body work together as a whole. I learned about lateral and medial tilt, which is the way the scapula glides and angles as the shoulder joint moves. Lateral tilt is performed by scapular abduction, while medial tilt is performed by scapular adduction.

There are so many different components that help the shoulder girdle move around and as you said at the end, it is really important to see how everything works together to be able to get to the root of the issue. Amongst all the muscles, the articulation between the humerus and the scapula, and all of the mobility that the scapula can have, one "small" issue can cause a lot of instability in a complex area of the body.

I really appreciated you pointing out and showing the difference between upward rotation and downward rotation of the scapula. That's a topic that I have not mastered. It makes a heck of a lot more sense now, however. Thank you for bringing light to that. Shoulder joint and shoulder girdle movements happen simultaneously but should girdle is not dependent on shoulder joint but the shoulder joint is dependent on the shoulder girdle (have to stabilize the shoulder girdle; the scapula). The push ups vs bench press comparison was awesome, too! I have developed chronic pain for doing too much push work and not enough pull. I have to strengthen my serratus anterior and scapula so that my shoulder glides much smoother. In the bench press, I cannot keep my right shoulder stable. Maybe I should use less weight. Now that I can picture what scapular movement looks like and how it moves on its axis (lateral tilt and medial tilt) will help me work out more effectively. Thanks Professor!

A million years ago when I was on swim team, I remember being coached to "release" the shoulder blade, to allow for that full range. The elevation and posterior tilt when reaching in free-style, and then depressing and anterior tilt at the end of the pull when in shoulder extension. I didn't understand all of the movement back then, this definitely connects the dots!

A lot of the time people confuse joint movement with plain old movement. They don't take in to consideration that you have movement because of joint movements. The movement is not dependent on the muscles and joint, because of the passive hang ability, but to move distal extremities the shoulder girdle must stabilize.
