Had a Diabetes Education appointment, through a Community Health Centre, where the "nurse" told me these three things: 1) that intermittent fasting would make me gain weight (provided a Sumo Wrestler scenario), 2) a keto diet for patients with diabetes is very bad, 3) fasting burns muscle. I asked her if she had heard of any recent scientific studies that showed the opposite results but she had no answer. I did recommend that she google some stuff (and Dr Jason Fung) before telling a diabetes patient those sorts of things. Wish there was diabetes education that was current and not meant to stop a patient in their tracks so they won't follow any other science or advice that would benefit them. She did acknowledge that within 1 month I had lost 13 pounds and my numbers look better than a month ago but she still wouldn't agree that fasting was actually working for me. Sad state of affairs.

Denial is such a toxic & sad thing. I've heard several MDs actually ADMIT that they STRONGLY RESISTED admitting the TRUTH about the REAL CLINICAL benefits of intermittent fasting - because of how BRAINWASHED & DEEPLY INDOCTRINATED they were in medical school. Med students were, & ARE TRAINED to believe (& teach their patients) the opposite of what Dr Fung NOW KNOWS & USES TO TREAT his patients. Dr Fung admits that med school programmed him to believe the lie about metabolic syndrome & diabetes - when he describes his journey to recognizing that IF IS A HUGELY EFFECTIVE TOOL to treat & REVERSE severe metabolic syndrome & diabetes in his patients.

Pride is also a problem for many docs... when they cannot argue with the REAL science AND the PROOF that is in the results in front of their eyes = A PATIENT WHO IS TRULY LOSING WEIGHT. They know & see it, yet their PRIDE keeps them from admitting they are wrong to keep following the "old" way of treating metabolic syndrome. I LOVE that Dr Fung just ADMITS HE WAS WRONG, then changed his mind USING CRITICAL THINKING & also CHANGED HIS PRACTICE. And now ... GOBS of patients are greatly benefiting from that ... & healing their metabolic syndrome! YAY!!

@@jem30six I always break my fast with big, raw veggie salad with No dressing. Instead mash up a whole avacado and mix it around with all the veggies. Add olives and beans for flavour and protein. Absolutely no meat or processed food. For dinner I eat whatever anyone else eats. Pasta, steak, rice, potatoes, hamburgers, etc etc. I start eating around 2 or 2:30 and stop at 6 pm. I don’t drink alcohol or soda or juice. Only water, sparkling water, coffee and tea with nothing added to it.

@@septemberlondon I eat whatever i want on the 7th day. The key is to stop at 6 pm and no matter what start fasting again. It’s all about self control. Every time you do this you strengthen your abilities and eventually it becomes habit and you have to think about it. You will also find that you don’t gorge as much as you used to and junk food is not as exciting anymore. True freedom does not come from endless choices and doing whatever you feel in the moment. True freedom comes from minimal choices and simple living.

A lot of people don’t realize that most of what pharmaceutical companies sell don’t cure much of anything, they simply “treat” symptoms. And the danger with many of their products is that they themselves also cause a host of other side effects that will in turn necessitate more drugs to treat those symptoms. While not every single illness can be cured by diet, making a transition to natural fruits, meats, and veggies in combination with intermittent fasting and a bit of exercise can reverse many ailments and ameliorate the effects of other illnesses as well. (Exercising doesn’t necessarily translate to working out heavily at the gym, a 20+ minute walk can do a lot for many people, and can be an excellent foundation that encourages people to be more physically active throughout the day)

I've lost about 30 kg (66 lbs) using keto and fasting, and if I can recommend anything, is to cut out the diet soda from the diet. It really ended up stalling my progress some times due to the fact that the sugar substitutes were still messing with my insulin. After I cut it out, everything started getting better. I'd also like to thank you, Dr. Fung, I feel confident in saying that watching your talks has impacted my life in one of the best ways possible.

Since I started fasting about a month ago, I have been sleeping fine. Don't need anything for my insomnia. This alone is the most important reason for me to continue fasting as a life style. I also stay busy during a fast by drinking coffee or water, working on my computer, or listening to podcasts or music or by watching videos. This is especially important when my energy is up at night on the days when I don’t eat dinner. That brings me to my next point which is that those 36-40 hour fasts really kick stubborn weight in the backside. There’s something powerful about going an entire day without eating so that you’re 24 hours into your fast by dinner time, and then fasting overnight and not eating until breakfast or lunch the next day (what’s funny is that I’m usually less hungry in the morning than I was when I went to sleep). That will break any plateau and start to burn stubborn body fat that’s been there your entire life. I now do a 40 hour fast at least once or twice a week.

I love fasting. I've been at it for about a week. I am now up to a 22-hour fast every day. I feel great and I am conquering my food demons and losing weight. At first I had a lot of trouble sleeping but last night I slept 9 hours. I feel light headed in the mornings but drink coffee and an electrolyte capsule or some celtic sea salt water. Fasting is a regimen I feel I can continue and my sugar addiction has diminished substantially. Only after my one meal do I want something sweet and then it is satisfied very easily. I no longer get hungry late at night and eating at night used to be a real problem. Thank you Dr. Fung. Your videos have changed my life.

I've read that the initial headaches are a symptom of sugar withdrawal. It happened to me too, additionally I had horrible moods and was hangry for a few days. That is true. I experienced shakiness and a few headaches when I cut out sugar and snack foods. Your body is so used to getting that rush of carbs and sugar, that it goes through withdrawals when it's not getting it at intervals. After a few days, you actually don't crave sweets and empty calories, at least in my experience.

Thanks very much, Dr. Fung, for your pearls of wisdom and expertise on this fascinating lifestyle. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, so do your own research. I think my experiences of fasting are very helpful and relevant because of my years of daily and multi-day fasting lifestyle. So on a daily basis, I only eat in a 2-hour window, 6pm - 8pm, for the remaining 22 hours I consume 3 to 4 cups of good quality ground black coffee, and as much carbonated water as I please. On my periodic multi-day fasts, (my longest being 23 days in September 2019) I always begin my day with a half teaspoon of Himalayan pink salt in my first litre of water for the essential mineral consumption. Also, I always begin my multi-day fasts with a saltwater flush. Makes perfect sense if you think about it, but again, do your own research. Fasting is primarily a mental exercise, so prepare your mind and body prior to your fast. Good luck - Over and out

My opinion is the reason why people worry about being hungry when contemplating fasting, is because we as a society are not used to going "hungry". We have so much in snacks (chips, cookies, cakes, crackers, etc...), that we don't really experience hunger the way it is meant to be. Hunger is a trigger for our bodies, and most of society today continually snack and don't experience true hunger. That is my opinion and experience doing the intermittent fasting.

You presents facts, and it’s good to see more and more holistic and wise doctors coming out, and show us the proper way. My brother tried and quit, because he said it was “hard.” I will forward this video to him. Hopefully, he will find the will and the way to do it. If not, I fear his type I will turn into type II Diabetes. Sadly, we lost our oldest brother at 53 to DM. Ironically, in high school he was a cross country runner. Also, he was a Veteran, enlisted both in the Navy, than in his mid 30’s into the Army. He managed to survived through 2 types of military Bootcamps. But, in the end, he did not know how to manage his health issues. It creeped up on him, until he lost the will to change.
