Hello Dr Fung, I’ve been playing around with fasting for the last 3 years. I’ve done 7 day water fast once to kick start the fat loss. Using your analogy fridge/freezer, how do I get to the “freezer” with IF, if I refeed every 36 hours and get to ketosis usually takes at least 48 hours. How do I burn fat on 16/8 or 24 hour IF regiment then?

I gave up sugar long before I ever heard of Keto or fasting. Possibly this made things a little easier for me, because I've found Keto and intermittent fasting so easy. I'm still fasting 19:5 every day and I've 'shed' a ton of weight. I started in May 2020 and I weighed 313 pounds. Today I weight 210 pounds.
@InSync39123 жыл бұрын
Do you count total or net carbs? And great fasting regimen, too long fasts trigger my binging.
@RobCLynch3 жыл бұрын
@@InSync3912 hi, when I started, I did count net carbs, but I feel this held me back. In the end, I just decided that carbs were not necessary and although I still get some - less than 20 grams per day, that's when the magic happened. So the only carbs I get are from vegetables and my coconut and almond flours. I'm not an expert, but my take on your 'long' fasts is to consume larger meals during your eating window and to include more fat. Consider fat bombs when the craving comes to town. Hope that helps.

I fast every single day for 20 hours and I randomly do 48 hour fasts too. I only drink water during those times except first thing in the morning I add electrolytes to my water (powder form and also has sodium, potassium and magnesium in it). Being in ketosis is incredible and gives me amazing energy. I've lost inches from my waist and legs.

@ Chandra. I'm very happy for you! I started 16/8 about 10 weeks ago and lost 22 lbs. This is the fastest I've ever lost weight. I've done a few fasts for about 24 - 40 hours but still find them difficult. I used salt and substitute salt to get sodium and potassium in the last time (1 tsp each sipped slowly over 40 hours in water); that made it easier but was still a challenge. I'd like to add in magnesium and calcium next time. What powdered electrolytes did you use? Thanks in advance!
@tribalbabymum2 жыл бұрын
When you talk of electrolytes in powder form, is it a product? I add lite salt with potassium and sodium, or magnesium fizzy tablets or use salt tablets at different times, usually with Vit D. I saw those other comments, geez, Megan Ramos says the first 24hrs are the most critical for replacing electrolytes as the body is dumping them with the excess water from the insulin drop. I certainly benefit from some combination.

@@muslimgirl6782 It's pretty simple, so I'm not sure how much help it will be, but it's currently: "FOOD AS A PROXY FOR... -pleasure/taste... *drink apple cider vinegar -self-care... *take a shower, go on a stroll -stress relief... *meditation -freedom of choice... *make travel plans for post-pandemic -comfort... *stop all work, watch a favorite movie/TV show" When I feel a "hunger" pang, I look up at the board and try to figure out what feeling I'm searching for. The hardest emotion to satisfy is the desire for comfort, because I've found even stopping all stressful activities leaves me wanting something else. Getting fat adapted is the key. Going whole food plant based and IF is the best. Carbs do not cause or exasperate type 2 diabetes its simply bc all the fat and processed crap we eat stops glucose from entering the cells leaving it trapped in the bloodstream. I am not saying keto or low carb will not drive down glucose levels, a1C, and even other markers like triglycerides. I am saying its like putting a band aid on the real issue however, because as soon as you reintroduce even a moderate amount of carbs your glucose levels will rise dramatically. WFPB mostly or clean veganism is just as difficult if not more difficult to follow than low carb, but if tour goal is a healthier LONG life thats clearly the way to go. Check blue zones where there are large amounts of centenarians or the largest percentages of populations living that long and you will find one common denominator......... ding ding ding ill give you a hint they are not low carb or low carb high fat dieters. They are all predominantly plant based and high carbohydrate. Also the only diet with sufficient CLINICAL research that has not only stopped but reversed heart disease. Take all this as you will, but research and you will see for yourselves. I love Dr Fung and will continue to IF and alternate day fast even though im off the low carb and keto ship. Although it is harder you can indeed still fast even for long periods without low carb. Fat adaptation is not dependent on a low carb diet and has been proved especially by bodybuilders who are already fit who carb cycle and eliminate anything for a cit just before a competition. Was 365 October 2019 and am now 300 although i did get down to 275 at my lowest around 4 months ago. Fell off an am trying a new approach going forward. Best of luck to everyone no matter how you get there!

@@aaronrender4867 Good luck to you too. WFPB with IF is a great diet and can be very effective for weight loss and improving your overall health. I find lower carb, higher fat to be best for me. It can be done vegan and vegetarian of course. It’s just a bit too restrictive for me. The key to healthful eating is real food. So much better for us than the very SAD consequences of the standard American diet.

@@faithjulian753 No doubt the combination of highly processed foods and the constant coupling of carbs and fats together led me to a morbidly obese state. I had high blood pressure and my a1C was 8.9. Triglycerides were over 500. Total Cholesterol was over 200. i really think i was on the verge of death. Went low carb and did some keto with IF but ate toms of veggies. Numbers drastically went down then slowly but as of earlier this month all markers are great even though i have put 25 of the pounds i lost back on. A1C down to 4.9 total cholesterol 104 amd Triglycerides 97. Only take 10 mg Lisinopril now. Lost the statin, metformin even though im trying to get it prescribed agian lol(see dr david sinclair) no more diuretic either. Thanks Dr Fung for these video tips. I particularly liked that you mentioning finding a support group. I went through the journey alone, found my eating window and made better food choices and achieved my results. Because my window of eating time and food choices, it was annoying to others in the household that I dont align with their eating schedule and constantly decline eating the food (carbs) they eat. I goto restaurants that dont have food options for me so I watch others eat, which is okay to me, but annoying to others in the group. These are the people who said I used to be too fat and ate too much. I am back to normal weight now, and most importantly healthy. Cannot be happier.

Thank you for all you do! I’m at about hour 41 of my very first 48 hour fast and I feel fantastic (I may even extend it another 12-24 hours!) The emotional eating really resonated with me. In 2019 I lost just under 100 lbs eating a low card real food diet and cycling every morning. I wasn’t doing Keto per se, just cut out the processed foods and starch/sugars. Unfortunately my entire industry got gutted during covid and I ended up gaining about 55-60 pounds back due to stress and emotional eating. I became extremely depressed and filled with anxiety and self loathing. I started a clean Keto regiment about 3 weeks ago and started a 16/8 cycle last week. I haven’t gotten on a scale yet but I have already dropped 2 belt holes and more importantly I feel fantastic again (work has also started picking up which I’m sure has helped emotionally/mentally) I’m so motivated and inspired by all the help you and others provide and the examples of success! Thank you!!!

Another tip is to watch out for the naysayers. Was at a ball game sitting next to a heavy set nurse. I told her about my 28 day fast. She "poopoo"ed it. She's sitting there eating a pretzel. She's saying I really shouldn't be eating this. I've lost 18 pounds so far from a tight size 18 to a tight size 12. I will be doing intermittent fasting with the 23:1 window and also alternate day fasting. This is not for everyone. But this absolutely works for me. There were many a day where I said do I really have to eat?. Turns out I really didn't have to. I'm thrilled to pieces. This is my new lifestyle which makes me healthy and happy. I wish you all success.

Try alternate day fasting and just keep reducing the simple carbs and junk food and eventually you will have fewer sugar swings and feel less urge to binge. Emotions are the trigger but the physiology is VERY REAL and that is the real issue. Even when you are on heroin it does not starve your brain which is what happens with insulin resistance and constant insulin swings

Food is highly addictive. I think it's a psychological problem. You have to try and change your habits and behaviour. Dr Robert Cywes The carb addiction doctor has some great videos. Try not to have any junk food at all in the house. Do as much exercise as you can. Start slowly maybe walking then short jogs. You can gradually increase a little more each week. Hope this helps, good luck.

I know what you mean by being sick of being overweight, no way I want to go through another summer with these thighs! Here’s something that might get you on track, look up videos of Dr Chris Knobbe on vegetable/seed oils. If you didn’t know this already it will change your whole outlook around food. I find fasting easier if I’m keeping busy & distracted from food & drink extra water with a little salt or herbal tea. A few years ago I did alternate day fasting (36 hours) for 2 or 3 months, first couple times was difficult & didn’t make it but then I started looking forward to it cause I would actually sleep better with less pain issues & had much more weight loss than doing only 24 hours. I wasn’t doing keto then & have a stressful job & ended up stopping, but I’m excited to start again. With keto & the right fats it will work this time & it will work for you 🙏🏼

My support group is the comment section under your youtube channel LOL. I have been on a 18/6 fast for a week now and I've lost 1lb a day so far, I know this is most likely water weight, but it feels awesome to see my weight go down a whole pound every single day so far. I start to get super hungry at noon, so I drink a cup of coffee with a splash of coconut milk and it holds me off until 4pm. My eating window is from 4pm-10pm, I had to have a late window because I realized I value my late night routine more than I value breakfast and lunch. I love drinking a glass of wine at 9:30 before bed and I love to eat gummy bears while watching t.v. after work. I'm willing to give up breakfast and lunch for gummy bears and wine any day. I eat 1 meal at 4pm and I don't have a rule about not eating again, I just don't get hungry again, so I just eat my gummies and sip my wine once I get home, if I did get hungry again within my window I have no problem eating a second meal, but fortunately for me that has not been the case. If I can do it, so can anyone who is on the fence about it and doubting themselves.

I don't use the words "intermittent fasting" around some of my family members because they'll tell me how dangerous it is so I tell them I don't eat after 7:00 p.m. Nobody would ever think that's dangerous. In fact, it sounds admirable to not snack all evening. I don't mention that I'm skipping breakfast because they'll tell me that it's "the most important meal of the day" and I should eat. When I've lost a lot of weight I'll tell them if I ask.
@AzaleaBee3 жыл бұрын
Please excuse me as I laugh just a little. These semantics are true and I'm going to use this. And add to it... "I don't usually eat after 7pm" "I don't eat between meals" (in the morning when a "skipped" breakfast is noticed): I'll be sure to eat well later. (later could be tomorrow... hahaha) (if a skipped lunch is noticed): I'm good. I'm not hungry right now. (99% of the time that would be accurate) My immediate family is supportive now.. but I don't want to deal with others. :)

I found it is useful to say I’m not hungry. People can’t argue with that because they can’t feel what you feel to be able to say yes you are. And when they are shocked I didn’t eat breakfast and say it’s the most important meal of the day, I found that it’s better to say I can’t eat too early or I feel sick. Or I tell them I dont feel hungry until later in the day and then I eat breakfast. I also can say I have a medical condition that means I need to wait longer before I’m ready to eat. There’s all kinds of ways to answer depending on the person.

In the past 9 months I have taken off 40 pounds, no more arthritis aches and pains and have more mental clarity than I have since my 30s. I realized a few weeks ago that I was actually doing OMAD in my 30s. I didn't watch the macros in those days so probably 50% of my food was most carbs (lots of sugar) but my weight was where it needed to be and I felt great.
