I had an MRI and went to a well respected neurosurgeon. It was my second visit in two years and I have spinal stenosis. I three levels of degenerative discs. I am scheduled for ACDF procedure in May. When I asked him if my vertigo could be cause by my neck condition he said highly unlikely. This video has me thinking it might be. Thank you for the info!

It's definitely possible, however, ruling out other potential causes is important. I wish you all the best.

Wow...that first test really brought on the dizziness/vertigo. And I've been diagnosed with disk degeneration and osteoarthritis. I can hear grinding in my neck when I rotate it...I realize I need to get more tests, but this really was helpful. I've been suspicious my neck problems were the cause. Time for a visit to the dr. Thanks...great content.

Hello Dr. Saunders, I was diagnosed with DDD several years ago. However, after an upper endoscopy 4+ years ago, I started feeling lightheaded, not for a brief while but 24/7 to date. Not a dizzy or faint feeling but for lack of a better word, I felt like I was high on weed. I haven't smoked in nearly 2 decades but this is what I'm experiencing. After my initial discovery, my doctor immediately sent me to a cardiologist to rule out any heart-related issues. I did all the necessary diagnostics and nope, not my heart. I went to see an ENT Specialist to make sure it wasn't an ear infection, nope, ears are good. I had suspected it was neck-related because whenever my neck aches got more intense, the lightheadedness was elevated but never to the point of dizziness or fainting. I say neck aches because I do not get neck pain or any stabbing sensation as many describe. Every time I go to see my doctor which is twice a year, I complain about my lightheadedness and it falls on deaf ears. In my research, I came across Cervicogenic Dizziness and even mentioned this to my doctor on my last office visit. Again, he said/did nothing. I saw the ENT Specialist again because this is affecting my quality of life and I just want to wake up one day normal. I go to bed lightheaded and wake up lightheaded. I am getting foggy and I'm on slow mode because of this. When I go down the stairs, I make sure to hold on to the railing because I do not know what to expect. Can a chiropractor truly help me? Thank you.

I have been saying for years my dizziness is coming from my neck! I don't feel crazy now! Everything in this video is what I experience. I've said all of those things "foggy", "drunk" "feeling off". I recently started PT for a shoulder injury and they massage my shoulder and neck as part of my treatment and this triggered some severe dizziness and eventually a migraine. Still feeling the "aftershock" 6 days later.

i ended up with Dx of pppd because i have a history of meniers symptoms including vertigo and tenitis, pppd is like chronic dizziness, its makes it hard to walk , shop drive etc, i had to go to vestibular PT for a couple months , which included watching optokenetic videos on you tube, but am feeling much better. Life changer! I also have chronic neck pain so i believe i get vertigo episodes because of my neck too. because sometimes when i turn head left or right the vertigo would start. stretching daily and decompression does help my neck feel better, plus heat and ice, creams etc. thank u for these videos

I've had dizziness and lightheadedness from 12 yrs ago and had been diagnosed with "focal seizures". I've been on anti-seizure pills ever since which helped somewhat. This past June, my symptoms came back in the worst way, like the meds weren't working anymore, so long story short, I seen a different neurologist, and they said that I was misdiagnosed. I went through an EEG and also the 72 hr EEG and they said it looks normal. After doing these tests in the video, I'm almost 100% positive my problem is in my neck. When I do the test where you close your eyes and rotate your body, I get so dizzy I feel nauseated. I'll seek a chiropractor that can help, hopefully I'm going in the right direction. Thank you for the video!

This helped so much to determine if I have cervicogenic dizziness. I surely do. 5 weeks now. I'm seeing an upper cervical chiropractor. My Atlas was off but its been holding so far since adjustments to my neck and spine. Im very dizzy the day after adjustments. I'm dizzy the most when walking not so much sitting still. Riding in the car is like being in a boat in a storm, so I use a pillow like a shock absorber. I'm slowly improving, very slowly. I can't drive. Im doing neck exercises. Sometimes its hard to think and comprehend things. I'm just waiting for my body to heal. Thank you doc for this video!

I definitely have dizziness caused by my neck. I'm sixty-seven, and have had it most of my life, but it just recently became bad enough to interfere with my life. I'm just looking around for anything I can do at home that my doctor and chiropractor might have overlooked. Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it, but numerous medications can make this condition much worse. I'm on three medications that list dizziness as a common side effect, and I'm sensitive to all three.

We need to start coordinating; Do our own analysis on this community to find patterns. Here's one question for everyone having dizziness after the vac. Every person post your answer below and we'll look for patterns. Prior to the shot, have you ever had issues with the nervous system or dizzy spells? I have. I had decades of stress that gave me back & neck stiffness, and made me restless. And 6 months before my shot, I had my 1 and only dizzy spell for a few minutes. After the shot, (seconds after), the dizziness came on and stayed. It's been a year now.

I was rear ended in July. I’ve been told by my pt and chiro I have a flat neck. I’m having all kinds of issues. Was reading about the vagus nerve. Heart palpitations, dizziness, can’t walk straight or seem to stand with a proper sturdiness. All the grinding. All these tests produced dizziness. It’s a workers comp issue so it’s taking longer to get care but I’m finally getting an mri scheduled

This has come up as a recommended video and I'm so thankful that it did. I have been experiencing severe vertigo for a couple of months now and it has been so bad that it has knocked me off my feet a few times. Through out this whole time I have been in pain with the left side of my neck, from under my jaw to my collar bone/shoulder region. A week ago the pain in my neck subsided and I only realised a couple of nights ago that had any bouts of dizziness had eased. Yesterday the pain in my neck was back and so was the dizziness. I tried stimulating the neck muscles as you showed and I pressed along the left side of my neck and felt nauseous and slightly dizzy. I thought it was an inner ear problem, but now it seems as if that may not be the case.

Lower back problems can lead to vertigo. Since the lower back pumps synovial fluid, that malfunctions with lower back inflammation, plus misalignment moves up the spine. I've experienced it for 40 years.

I just wanted to add something about cerviogenic dizziness for those of us who have had cervical fusions. I had a double cervical fusion with titanium plating at C5-C6 and C6-C7. Six weeks after the surgery I started physical rehab and my neck muscles had gotten so weak I couldn't lift my head off the table. After strengthening the neck muscles in therapy I could lift and rotate my neck again, but 16 years after the surgery was when I first started getting cerviogenic dizziness. I was older, and my neck and upper and mid-back muscles had all gotten weaker. I now realize that I had also slipped into a forward head posture, which made the dizziness that much worse. If you've had a cervical fusion, you really need to stretch and strengthen the neck muscles and ligaments. The fusion and plating artificially supports the neck and can lead to the muscles and ligaments getting weak from disuse. I talked to my neurosurgeon and he said that within 15 years of cervical fusion surgery up to 80% of patients will get cerviogenic dizziness. (It would have been nice if he or one of his staff had mentioned this at the time of the surgery so that I could have been more vigilant about keeping my neck strong and wouldn't have freaked out when I did get cerviogenic dizziness the first time...)

Thank you so much for these at home tests. When I do them, I not only get dizzy and can't bring my head to center, but I also feel nauseous. Is nausea also a sign? I had a bad fall recently, and I think I got whiplash... I'm not sure if it's a concussion... but it's been a week, and I still get dizzy/nauseous/anxious/dazed on really short walks. At times, I can't stand moving objects. I saw my family doc, but he was really dismissive and provided no clarity. So, thanks for your videos. Update: Turns out I have post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and whiplash. I started doing physiotherapy, and it's been helping. Thought it's worth mentioning for anyone else that might be experiencing the same. I also had increased light and sound sensitivity.

I wish they wouldn't lump all dizziness together under one word. The type you get from say low blood pressure or hyperglycemia is very different than neck related. They are all very, very different. They all make you feel unsteady but not all make you feel like passing out (hyperglycemia dizziness is usually combined with shaky or slightly trembling hands). Full on Vertigo where things just seem to spin and float around you is completely different than dizziness. Spinning in place does make you dizzy but it's very different than the other types. Honestly would some doctor somewhere start realizing they are all very different, that's how you narrow it down. Have people really try to explain what it feels like, that will be all you actually need to determine the cause. I've been to numerous chiropractors and physiotherapists and they simply are not trained to know the various types and just continue to lump them together. As a chiropractor start really asking exactly what the symptoms are like in minute detail.

I'm learning more here than from my doctor and an ENT. After an MRI and other tests, all I got was "yup, youve got vertigo, take these". Helped for a little while. Found the same thing in over the counter motion sickness meds. I got to the point of taking 200mg of meclazene. Then that stopped working. I gave up with meds. Vertigo went away for a few years. Now it's back and more frequent, so here I am.

This has been a revelation. for years i've had a stiff neck and struggling with dizziness. ENT doctor could not find anything, went to an ear doctor to find out if I had inner ear inbalance-no evidence, finally got an MRI on my neck and they found moderate to sever stenosis in my C4-C5. My internal medicine physcian is trying to get me an appointment with a Neurosurgeon to assess on what would be the best course of action. All this to say, everything Dr. Saunders mention is my situation to a the letter including the tests I just performed.

I had vertigo when I suffered with an ear infection,(I also had covid at the time)this was the start of excruciating neck pain, and no matter what painkillers I took, they barely touched the pain I was suffering.Now 2yrs later I still have very bad back neck pains, especially when I wake up that causes headaches,maybe also its the way I sleep?!!,. I have a tv in my bedroom, and even when I lay down to watch, the pain comes back causing very bad head aches.I do try to exercises as to loosen the back of my neck(,ie neck rolling) but with limited results.

Yes. It's also called "Cervical Instability". It's very difficult to diagnose and most neurologists can't help. I had it after my C5-C6 ACDF. Sometimes it recurs. It can cause some terrifying effects. Panic will only make it worse.
@drjonsaunders
@drjonsaunders 3 жыл бұрын
Cervical instability is one cause of cervical vertigo, but there are many other causes as well (DDD, muscle spasms, proprioceptive and joint position errors, etc...) - and you are totally correct - it takes special "stress" x-rays and or motion x-rays to diagnose true cervical instability AND it is often missed or dismissed by neurologists unless they have experience with it. Thank you for your comment...best wishes.

Dr. Jon, this is very interesting, especially for those of us, like me that definitely have cervical issues. I'm a 70 yo, male, retired in May 2021, forced by the numerous spinal maladies of Facet Joint Arthritis, Spondyloitis, & Degenerative Disc Disease with a Leg Length Discrepancy - 1 " shorter right leg since 1966 after a fractured Femur at 15 years old. That in itself , which ws left Unaddressed after the Body Cast came off, has affected my spine Big Time. Unfortunately, I paid little or attention to the Creepeing Affects of Lower back pain and stiffness which began about 15 years later. The LLD has created mkuch harm by Twisting and curving my spine (dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees), stemming to my Neck - DDD there too, Military Neck (loss of the Curve), and C4-C7 disc bulges with all the facet joints with arthritis. A number of others posting here, describe it well: It's not total dizziness , but can be subtle and feel like getting off a Boat or Elevator. The Cervical Instabilities also affect Soooo very Much in the body as the Vagus Nerve passes through the Top 2 vertebrea (Atlas & Axis), and the stenosis affecting that and other Nerves as they go to the other reaches of the Body. I'm No Doctor, but have elected to find ANSWERS that do not come from Doctors. The typical mantra od Neurologists, Pain Management drs, Rheumatologists , etc., "Take a Pill For The Ill". Chiropractic and Acupuncture care helps (I've been to many ), the 6 different Neuro and Spinal Surgeons have all told Me No Surgery for you. Definitely not on your Lumbar Spine - way too much arthritis, Maybe a Candidate for cervical fusion if "It" becomes unbearable. I have learned that The cervical Instabilities, contribute to Chronic Sinusitis, TMJ Syndromes, Ear pain, Balance issues with Gait Unsteadiness , Incontinence, even IBS / GERD (The Vagus Nerve), eye pain / Twitches, even painand discomfort to my Teeth / Cheeks. To complicate matters for me, my first Cervical MRI done in 2012, revealed that my spinal canal is More Narrow Than Normal according to the radiologist report. That in itself combined with the other issues that have developed previously stated, to a Layman like me, but kuch less so because of the research I've done, Screams that Common Sense would indicate that this is the Culprit of the many health maladies. I'm looking into Prolotherapy which is not readily available to me in Suburban NY. When one hits this point of misery (mostly the Chronic Stiffness and the temporal pressure/ headaches, Tinnitus, ear and eye pain (off and On), and Chronic pain [fortunately, usually 5-7 level , never a 10], wchich generates anxiety, I'm ready to try anything to eliminate these maladies. I would welcome any opions of Prolotherapy.

I've had panic attacks for a long time, since about 10 years ago. Four years ago I had my first panic attack that really scared the heck outta me but it was different from the rest. I felt like i was falling into the street and it was horrible. Weird thing is, i don't know if it was a panic attack or vertigo that caused the panic. That's what makes it hard when you've been through anxiety problems. I've had two vertigo spelld this year once after waking up and the other after s very stressful week and had a super tight neck. I got checked by doctors and they determined it was anxiety related since i have the vertigo feeling but it goes away fast and doesn't come back. The only time i feel it is when I'm super anxious and or super stressed and have a stiff neck. This video made me realize it's probably a neck issue because they checked my ear and said it was okay also health wise I'm good. Any tips Doc?

For me it all started, 4-5 yrs ago. It began with anxiety and panic attacks. My reading now is that the trigger was the vertigo I was geting which was leading to anxiety and panic. It is mostly like chicken and egg story. Which came first? I started visiting psychologist, it gave me temporary relief but after 2-3yrs I realised problem was different, which the psychologist will never tell you. For me it was problem with the inner ear which was proved by the nystagmus I was having. I am on my way to recovery (60-70% recovered) just by doing the exercises (train the brain). I am also having stiff neck with mild cervical spondylosis, which could be another reason for my dizziness and imbalance. Still working through this. Morale of the story is you need to educate yourself enough to understand the problem alongwith your doctor's. Nobody understand s your own body better than you. Best of luck who are suffering and trying to recover!! It is not a dead end.

My cardiologist (PT as premed) just diagnosed me with cervicogenic vertigo. Everything in this video points 100% to me 😢. I sit in the computer for long hours. Always experiencing neck pains. Then developed arm numbness. I felt numbness when raising my left arm. It started to get cold starting from the tip of fingers, like no blood is reaching my fingers down to the arm. I thougt i have heart problem. I consulted Cardiologist. After multiple tests, he ruled out cardiac related issues. Had Cervical MRI say I have degenerative issues, spondylosis, and cervical straightening. Hence, Cervicogenic vertigo diagnosis. Which brought me to search videos on youtube. Thank you for this informative video. Ps. 2x a week, i am having physical therapy with neck traction. I am feeling immediate relief around my neck muscles after my neck being pulled. My question, will consulting a spine doctor like you be better than seeing my PT and undergoing rehab?

Thanks for your reply. Maybe you could just help with something I am having a hard time deciding on. My physical therapist has said I shouldn’t get neck adjustments from my chiropractor right now while going through PT, she has gave me a couple exercises to do for my neck and is afraid it could “counteract” us trying to strengthen the neck muscles (trying to strengthen the muscles at the base of the skull). A PCM disagrees and said it fine to get adjusted while also doing PT. My X-ray says I have congenital fusion of C2/C3 which PT found (never even seeing my report) saying they aren’t moving and gave me an excuse for that area. (Also have a couple other things going on with C5 through C7) I have POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), went and got adjusted for the first time last week since being diagnosed months ago, and now I am have lower heart rates than I normally have had, which is why I want to go back to get adjusted. All I know, is about three weeks ago (before I started seeing a PT or the chiropractor), I started having “bobble head” where my head will randomly feel like a bubble doll and last for HOURS making me feel really drunk/dizzy. We have ruled out my ears. Anyways.. thoughts on getting my neck adjusted while doing PT. 🤔 Thank you for your time.
@MichelleWilson-ml4ic

Oh I should mention that I did have really bad “bobble head” after getting adjusted for hours, so that’s why I’m kind of scared to go back and do it again. PT said I could get my back adjusted. But suggested I don’t get my neck adjusted.

Also, mild can be hidden in HVAC units, air vents, anywhere there is high humidity (over 50%) and/or on moldy lumber, pallets, etc. there are blood test that can be ran to check against a list of toxic molds, it looks for an IgG, IgA and IgE reaction and then MMP-9 and TGF Beta-1, these are specialty test.
